Kengan Ashura Season 2

I rate this with extreme personal bias and zero objectivity, as I love Kengan Ashura and I've been waiting for this release for what seems like a lifetime. In all honesty, though, it definitely will need part 2 of the season to (hopefully) round things out. My sweet husbando Kaolan must have a sore back because he hard carried this season; in fact, I might argue you could watch the episode of his fight and the ass-end of ep 12 and you'd have not truly missed anything all that interesting by ignoring the rest. That said, I'd not take back bingeing it all in a ... single night purely for how much I love Kengan Ashura and the fighting tournament style.

Objectively: It was like 12 episodes of filler that really just rehashed things we'd already established in SE1. Still think the Kaolan fight ep is worth every other second, though.

For me as a person who likes and deals with martial arts, this is everything I could wish for, so this anime will appeal mostly to people who like a good fight and a little bloodshed. And the fight between Kaolan and Agito is one of the best anime fights in my opinion because it is very realistic, but of course with a little more action than in real life. If you like a good story, you won't find it here, but of course each character is special in its own right, and we get to know them through the episodes. So if you watched ... the first season, I see no reason not to watch this one as well :)

Kengen Ashura has returned with the first part of its second season and is exactly what you'd expect. Some good fights with way too many characters to actually follow what's going on.

I must admit, going into this season I did not remember what had happened in the slightest from the first season and needed to watch a recap. I say this because this likely influences my opinion of the overall plot so take it with a relative grain of salt. That being said, Kengen Ashura is definitely a show that benefits from the binge watching model of Netflix. The large number or characters from fighters ... to CEOs each with their own goals makes for an overcomplicated plot. When it comes to a tournament arc there are already problems with having to introduce so many characters over a short span of time while trying to flesh out everybody's motivations for fighting. When the entire show has been released its storytelling would be able to shine, but as is I have no idea why I should care about the thirty fighters outside of their fights. The CEOs have even less attention given to them despite being the main antagonistic forces within the plot. Kengen Ashura is bloating itself with continuing to follow many of these fighters despite already being out of the tournament. This distracts from Ohma and Yamashita's conflicts and only leaves a couple episodes to actually explore what's going on. Theoretically this is great, plenty of characters to watch even after they're out of the tournament, but in reality they don't do anything. They're just present to commentate on matches as they're happening. Even the climax of this episode batch was lame outside of learning more about Ohma's Niko Style. The best part of the show is the fights and some of the character's backstories. I particularly enjoyed the blind monk vs professional wrestler match. Otherwise, the story is a good enough excuse to write a tournament arc. Nothing more.

With there being so many characters, at least some of them have to be good. Unfortunately there's only a few of note from this batch. The professional wrestler was the best written side character by a mile and the climax of his fight was perfect for his story. The only other fight of any particular note was Kaolan vs the Fang of Metsudo. Two of the best fighters in the series clashing was bound to have good results and the outcome of the fight led to some nice character depth for the Fang. Ohma and Yamashita do not matter whatsoever in these twelve episodes. They do basically nothing except sit in the hospital after the first season's finale and make a choice whether or not Ohma will continue to fight. We do learn more about what Ohma went through during his Niko Style training but it doesn't add much to the character himself. Niko is a relatively shallow good guy right now but we may get some more depth to him by the end of the season so my opinion on him will remain neutral. Some of the characters I thought would be important to the narrative lost in the second round. I'm not sure of what their importance will be but it certainly seemed like they'd be shoe ins for the third round. The characters were ok and I doubt I'll remember any of them by the next episode drop.

The animation is the worst part of the show bar none. Netflix continues to 3D animate the shows they license and it still looks cheap. Most backstories are 2D animated and look way better than the 3D but were likely more expensive to produce. In fights, animations are reused to add length to the episodes which are already 25 minutes long. The best looking thing is the opening because it's been stylized well to fit with the song and vibe of the show. All of the characters are just an eyesore to look at when they're fighting but it almost adds to the roughness of the story. I just can't get over how ugly the 3D looks.

The music was great the entire time. The opening and closing were spectacular and perfect for setting the tone going into the episode. The music during action scenes was great for building up hype, especially during the introductions. Moving onto voice acting, the announcer girl was the best and it's not even close. Her hype building skills is comparable to Record of Ragnarok's. The other person of note is the gay guy who sees Ohma as his god. His performance is unhinged and makes his character low key terrifying. Everybody else is pretty average.

I enjoyed Kengen Ashura despite all that I said about its overcomplicated plot. It's still serviceable as a tournament arc and I'm a slut for a good tournament arc. The fights continue to be pretty good despite how unrealistic they are and really carry the entertainment value of the show. If you love Baki or Record of Ragnarok you'll certainly enjoy Kengen Ashura.

Kengan Ashura is back with the first part of its second season, and it starts off directly from where we left off in season 1 part 2. Round 1 of the Kengan Annihilation tournament has just concluded, and round 2 is about to start. The fights that happen in this part include:

- Wakatsuki vs Julius
- Sekibayashi vs Muteba
- Saw-Paing vs Rei
- Kuroki vs Setsuna
- Hatsumi vs Bando
- Agito vs Kaolan
All these fights were very good, but my favorite was definitely Agito vs Kaolan. The stakes were very high, and even though the animation is fully CGI, the fight looked extremely smooth and clean. Admittedly, the ... CGI is a bit jarring outside of the actual fight scenes, but hey, its a battle tournament series, so as long as the fights look good, that's really all that matters. The story is pretty standard, but enjoyable. The characters are also good, my favorite is definitely the MC, Tokita Ohma. He has a great, overconfident personality, but he can back up all his trash talk and claims. He took a backseat for most of this part, because in his previous fight last season he suffered injuries that caused him to fall into a coma (don't worry though, he comes back in the final episode). Other characters are quite interesting too,like Agito, Hatsumi, Wakatsuki, etc. The soundtrack is solid all around, it fits in well with the show. And the OP and ED by SiM and BAND-MAID respectfully are both absolute bangers. Overall, whether you're a fan of the Kengan Ashura anime, manga, or both, you will definitely end up enjoying this season a lot if you liked the previous seasons.

I think this season was Kengan Ashura at its best. I understand those who dislike the CGI as it does take some time to get used to. However, the ability of the anime to constantly have me second-guessing the outcome of each fight is unparalleled.
For every fight this season, I went into it thinking I knew who would win, but I was never certain during the fight, and I would repeatedly switch sides as the fight turned.
I thought Ohma being unconscious for this half of the season might have made it seem like the fights didn't have consequences and were filler, but the heart ... and soul of the animators, voice actors and producers made every fight seem important to the plot.

BIG MEN DOING MAN SHIT - 2 MAN 2 SHIT is back with the second meatiest tournament arc in all of anime after the one it copied its homework from. With lots of muscles, martial arts, drama, muscles, plot twists, hot women, hotter men, wrestling, muscles, blind cyborg black dudes, muscles, political strife, intense back stories and of course muscles, Kengan Ashura is here to once again deliver on what it does best and deliver on its grand climax!

If you watched Kengan season 1 and liked it, this is really more of the same but even better! The matches are even better this time round, ... though there are some minor duds there too. Overall though, these are the strongest matches yet and the characters are now filtered down to the actually important ones, so there is much higher stakes and tension too. Compared to it's pappy Baki, Kengan has significantly less random bullshit and is easier to follow. It's also a more straightforward martial arts celebration, so if that's your think, this is a must watch.

The animation remains top notch too and manages to capture this unbridled masculine intensity in all of its glory. While some dumb puritans out there may wince at the mention of CGI in anime, but here it's very much a stylistic choice and one that works towards the benefit of making all the attacks fluid, impactful and clearly readable and allows the fighters to wallop each other over and over and over and over again without each swing tanking the show's budget. The soundtrack hits just as hard too.

For this first half of episodes, I just wanna say I am definitely docking some score because of Ohma sleeping through almost the whole thing. Like, I criticized Baki for lolligagging in his first season and spending most of it doing PP training, but at least he did something. My man Ohma was less active than Monkey D. Dragon for this one! Thank fuck he woke up near the end there.

Overall, a rock solid anime full of manly fights that are sure to keep the blood pumping. Like classic martial arts films, Kengan Ashura has a simple premise executed marvelously. You know what you're here for and you'll get it in spades!

Probably the strongest entry when it comes to individual fights and really digging into strategy, this was mostly a showcase of that CGI animation for its fight scenes and it certainly stacks up against the best of the previous two parts. If it wasn't for the somewhat confusing revelations at the end of this part, as well as the coup attempt taking up a couple of episodes and largely grinding the best of the action to a halt, this would rate higher. It certainly provides more interesting perspective on Ohma's background, how it relates to him now, and hints at a much larger plot that ... might make things more interesting in the future, which elevates it slightly. It certainly secures this show as something I will come back to as soon as more episodes release. Overall, it's slightly better than Part I of S1 for me, and slightly lower than Part II, chiefly because of the uneven pacing.

This show has devolved into just countless side characters fighting each other with minimal backstories on all of them. This show in general focuses more on side characters than the main characters and for that reason I can no longer continue with this story. Ohma Tokita and Kazuo Yamashita are nowhere to be found for the first four episodes of this new season and with how little both of their personalities are the creator has to rely on side characters nobody cares about to keep the viewer interested and for me it's just not worth watching if the main characters continue to just be put ... in the background of their own show. It happened in the first season and it's happening now in the second season. It's devolved into just pointless fights involving characters you have no investment in whether they win or lose or even die in their fights. This show is just a pointless, gory mess with no real depth in regards to the story.
