Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Adolescence Mokushiroku

The film starts off playing mostly on the strengths of the TV series, being the bold use of abstract but metaphorically clear storytelling and dramatic abstract visuals to enhance it. Even as the story meanders a bit, it deals with some aspects of characters and themes not explored in the original show but that work well to form a natural thematic sequel, particularly all the intrigue involving Tougou, which builds to a strong climax.
However, the last leg of the film, about the last 20 minutes or so, finds itself unable to resolve any remaining thematic tension points and devolves into a convoluted mess of forced, ... semi-sarcastic symbolism that elaborates needlessly verbosely on overly simple ideas with nearly no development.
