Zashiki Warashi no Tatami-chan

It's just a silly show of people doing silly things. You need to understand that not all anime are made for edgy teenagers in need of their shonen rush or some old folks wanting more hardcore anime. I am the type of person that enjoy this type of show.

The industry needs this. If every show looks exactly like the last one then we won't progress. See the state of isekai. With the hundreds of stories out there studios still choose to adapt the most generic one.

Okay that was a weird segway but you got my point. To each it's own. Why would you hate on ... a 4 minutes silly comedy show? The humor is not top of the line but at least it makes you feel something.

Of course it's not good but it's not that bad either. It's on the lower average size for this type of show, not for the whole genre.

So looking I was looking through all the anime that was airing this season, and this anime caught my eyes. As the time of writing this is rated as an 4.90. It is the worst rated anime this season and I wanted to check out how bad this was.

But after binging the first five episodes, I have come to the conclusion that this anime is actually quite decent.

This short anime is about a little girl named Tatami moving to tokyo and getting used to the city. Also she is ghost and all her friends are other horror creatures. Every episode has a runtime of 4 ... minutes, inlcuding the 30 seconds ED. Its runtime is certainly a big downside, but not the biggest because the biggest downside goes to the animation. Because there is almost no animation. Everyone is drawn in static poses only changing faces or positions once in a blue moon. The artstyle is nice, but that does not make up for the power point presentation that is this anime.

But despite the extremely lacking animation and runtime, I am still enjoying this anime quite a bit. The anime has a cynical style of humor which resonates with. I especially love when Tatami gets into a stupid situation and she doesn't want to participate in any of it, she just wants to leave. The dialogue is really sharp and has some good quotes. The voice acting is also suprisingly solid, which makes up for the lacking presentation.

In conclusion, this anime is a pleasant surprise. I expected the worst and I got something half-decent. It is short, but that doesn't make the gags go stale. There is no animation, but the voice acting makes up for it. Characters shout all the time but they are atleast shouting funny things.

Also, the ED song is nice.

Check this anime out if you have a cynical style of humor.

Having watched the first 5 episodes of the show and realizing it wasn't doing anything for me, I can say that while it isn't nearly as well-produced as certain other SOL-comedy shows, it's also not nearly as bad as people are exaggerating it to be. It has a certain cynical humor to it that I found quite enjoyable for the first few times it was presented, but I can understand if that may get old for people eventually. Ultimately, while the show could use some improvements in terms of animation, it doesn't have to try nearly as hard as others simply because it isn't a ... show that's meant to be taken seriously.

If you enjoy the slapstick humor and animation quality of Pop Team Epic, and can endure episodes of the same running gag, then you might enjoy Zashiki Warashi no Tatami-chan

Zakashi Warashi no Tatami-chan is an inoffensive gag comedy that doesn't really stand out in any particular way. There's not much in the way of story besides the setup of a spirit moving to Tokyo and interacting with other monsters, which is followed by various bite-sized misadventures as she acclimates to the city. Most of the time it's passingly funny, even getting the occasional laugh, but some of the jokes are easily lost on a western audience. The art is colorful and lends itself well to a lighthearted, comedic atmosphere. Though, despite a couple of detailed loops, the overall animation is nothing more than what ... is strictly necessary to call itself animation. The sound meets the basic standards of quality, featuring bright and cartoonish voice acting and sound effects, with the sounds of life being almost entirely absent. Like the rest of the show, the characters are simple, and exist solely for the purpose of bouncing jokes off of. Overall, there's not much to this anime, and while it's not really that bad, it's not really that good either.
