MC is an introvert bookworm and author. MC parents die. A stray cat is separated from its younger siblings. MC adopts a stray cat. and life slowly starts changing for both of them become a family.

We are reminded of the sob story of dead parents and separated siblings in every episode. Lots of flashbacks. Both the MC and cat act like tragedy heroines suffering from past trauma. This is annoying at times. we do get to see all kinds of warm memories of both MC and the cat, so it is still worth it at the end.

I would not call it the best SoL. ... But it is definitely not bad. There are plenty of warm fuzzy moments which are the main source of attraction for SoL. The cat is also super fun, and its reactions towards other characters give us a lot of cute and funny moments.

Characters
well.. everyone is nice, as you may expect from such SoL stories. You could say that the lack of a decent set of side characters is why this show remains mediocre throughout.

The cat carries the show. Although, it is better to think of this cat as a human child, as it is humanized a LOT and barely resembles a real cat.

MC is an introvert and frankly, a pretentious loner. He can barely take care of himself. He overreacts to everything and brings down the enjoyment of the show a lot.

I won't recommend this for everyone. But if you are a fan of SoL, this is worth watching for the cat. This had great potential, but it could never utilize its strong setting. Just adding a romance plot, slightly better/proactive MC, Cat playing with other animals and so on would have made this show feel much better.

My Roommate is a Cat is a show about a guy and his new cat. Each episode is roughly split in two parts, beginning with the guy's perspective followed by the second half with the cat's perspective having its own internal monologue.

This show had so much potential but blew it on a character that is a delirious anemic. Moments of the show are heartfelt and nice but then the "comedy" messes it up. I had hoped for something akin to Usagi Drop instead of this, and if comedy is desired then the author should not have relied on the most basic of slapstick for comedy.

Who ... on earth falls over on their back when seeing a cat in a box? Who faints after walking two steps? These "gags" are mostly annoying, but might be enjoyable for some who enjoy caricatures. The socially anxious aspect of this character is also portrayed in a slapstick fashion, making the character just not feel real. There's very no introspection that could redeem the character.

The side-characters are not very interesting. Nana would come closest since she appears to be the most normal, but I had to look up her name for this.

The cat on the other hand is written quite well. It's a cat, it's not supposed to be a very complex character, and the writer gets this quite right. The cat functions mostly according to its instincts and that makes the interaction between the guy and his cat cute. They show desirable qualities like caring for each other while they both miscommunicate, giving a comedic/romantic undertone that aids in the central theme of trauma resolution.

The art is mediocre, some of the cat's animations look like someone just moved a sprite linearly.

As for music, it's a bit emotional - of the "music box" variety, but nothing memorable.

I enjoyed only parts of this show, again, the main human character ruins it with his sickly physical stature.

Overall I'd give the show a mediocre 5, but it was good enough for me to finish it. I just hoped it to be better.

This anime is heart warming and mild comedic anime. Its an anime with a fair plot.The anime is like a slice of life wherein the Male MC have just lost his parents and is now alone. He then meet the cat which he names as Haru and then they start their everyday life. Haru helps a lot as the MC tackles and remembers his parents and the things that he could have done for them.
I recommend this anime if you're a pet or cat lover. This anime has fresh and ... peaceful setting. I also recommend it if you have free time or losing anime to watch. I guarantee that you will enjoy this anime.

(don't misunderstand my rating cause i really enjoy it but i also consider other anime that i watch.) 6 doesn't mean its bad but it means fair enough. :))

TL;DR : wholesome show with a banger opening, humanized cats that may feel a little awkward from time to time but still the assurance of spending a good time watching. Despite that it still left me slightly irritated for reasons I'll develop now.

This is the story of a lonely grieving guy who opens up to others after he rescues a cat, and the story of said cat. In theory this would be a cute and heartwarming story for everybody, after all it's about all these caring people that are nice to each other you know, and CATS. Except that for me, the underlying message of ... this anime is messed up. Let me explain :
There is this guy, Subaru, who is visibly extremely uneasy with people around him, and generally likes peace and quiet. But the anime tells you he actually doesn't ! He just doesn't know better ! Mess around in his house without his autorisation, force yourself on him on a daily basis, basically be an obnoxious prick who only wants his good and he'll thank you in time, just you wait.
I'll give you that, it does thankfully work out in this show. It's a feel good show about people caring for each other and a grieving writter who tries to cope with his loss after all. But I'm telling you : don't EVER impose yourself on an introvert juste because you THINK they feel lonely. Introvertion is not some kind of weird mental disease where we can't say it but we're actually sad to stay holed up in our home far from the noise and other people. Please for the love of god let them value their personnal space in peace. In short, leave your introvert friends alone, or at least don't impose anything on them with the classical "c'mon it'll be fun", they'll be thankful. They are probably already doing efforts to hang out with you because they like you, so value those moments. Please keep that in mind.
All in all, still a good watch, even though it let me mildly salty.

I personally love cats and boys, so I think if anything I would be the like the exact target audience for this show. Slice of Life however is not my cup of tea unless done extremely well (think Barakamon). It was kind of decent at the beginning (first 3 episodes) but by episode 5 I really like how they started bringing in other cats with different personalities (minor spoiler for episode 5 incoming) like Haru's little brother was so adorable!! Honestly the show should be about HIM he's so cute and sweet!! The other cats also made for several great comedic moments which the earlier ... episodes were missing because the show just lacked that personality.

Animation and OST are nothing special and par for the course; I do think if the characters and scenery had a bit more artistic of a design it would do a lot for the show, because the dialogue wasn't bad.

The cat themself was okay... I'm a huge cat lover but she was really I don't know how to describe it but kind of tsundere? Like one of those really annoying anime girls put in the body of a cat. But the cat POV was the most enjoyable part of the show because that was something that differentiated it from a bunch of other shows I've watched before, and even if the sticky situations the cat got into were obnoxious, it was still more interesting than the character dialogue and plot events of the human character.

The show does try to veer into an emotional direction, where the cat is supposed to be a comforting figure to the failson shut-in friendless man who hates leaving the house, so if you like something chill and a little healing then I think you'd like the show. (minor spoiler for episode 3) It also deals with themes of familial loss which I think was done well as the show progresses, and I really loved how the main character's parents visited him as little spirits and Haru the caught tried to fight them off.
