Sakana no Kuni (The Nation of Fish) is an animated short film back from when Japan was still an empire. As such, it’s rather militaristic in nature. It’s about a bunch of fish being harassed by whales and they’ve had enough of it. Gruesome battle scenes ensue. Then we get the moral of the story, which is to not get lazy after you bathe in the blood of your enemies.

The anthropomorphizing of the fish is a bit odd to say the least. Some fish are just normal fish, while other fish are people with fish heads. By fish heads read more

What makes this short movie worth watching is the animation. It is very dynamic with strong focus on details, and the background art looks great too. Considering the era in which the movie was made the production value is then rather high.

Plotwise the movie portraits a fish society as a caricature of real human societies with apparent attempt to provide some moral lessons. There are no real individual characters. The story is very simple and is focused on conflict between the fish nation and whales.
