In opposite to their respective TV versions the two concluding movies of Evangelion and Ideon are similar in theme as well as imagery and even in music. The Ideon movie clearly inspired the epic conclusion of Evangelion.

Gunbuster (1988) mimicks on purpose Ideon‘s audio mnemonic, which marks the comercial breaks. It serves as a transition work between Ideon and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and reworks in a funny way ideons fight for human survival.

In Ideon: Be Invoked (1982), the technology found to be the apex of humanity elaboration is fueled by human energy and as progressively becomes unbeatable, also causes anomalies. Its mythology of unending power antecedes its occurrence in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007).

What does a Slice of Life anime have to do with a mecha anime? Obviously nothing. But these two animes have one thing in common: They both share the best endings of all time. Not only that, but it also has some similar aspects that I won't say because it's a spoiler. If someone likes the epic ending of one, they'll like the other.

Tragic/happy and epic endings. The ending of both is a little similar in just one aspect that I won't mention because it's a spoiler.

Both movies are the second in their respective movie series. Both anime deconstruct other anime from their respective genre, with Ideon being a deconstruction of mecha anime and Madoka Magica being a deconstruction of magical girl anime. Both shows feature young protagonists, who must use an unknown power in a battle against individuals from another race. They both have apocalyptic elements, as well as a huge number of casualties. Also, both shows have an overall similar mood.

Space Runaway Ideon is one of the anime that inspired Hideaki Anno's Evangelion, since they both deal with similar themes. Both are dark and gritty science fiction anime, featuring destructive mecha that display their own will. They also have apocalyptic elements.

Mindblowingly epic and beautifully tragic movies. If Tomino had the chance to make a sci-fi epic back in the day without having to worry about mech's, Queen Millennia may have been one of the results. The progression of the movie does feel similar to his style, so many things pile up to make an explosive finale. You do need to get through the Ideon series for Be Invoked, though that's probably not the case with the Queen Millennia movie, which is more than likely a redux on the series (like GE999 vs the GE999 movie). Epic sci-fi mastery right here.
