A list of anime I believe share a similar style of storytelling to the works of highly revered author, Haruki Murakami.

I drew upon the subject matter and allegories frequently covered by Murakami in his stories. Those of escapism, eroticism, surrealism, loss, depression, loneliness, identity, and redemption.

More titles will be inducted over time, suggestions are welcome.

Anime with unique art-style/premise and or surreal/dreamlike sequences

Art house, in relation to cinema, is a genre of films that are intended to be serious artistic works rather than merely popular entertainment but the descriptor can also be applied to anime. Furthermore, avant-garde refers to innovative, experimental, radical or unorthodox concepts and techniques. This can of course also be used in reference to anime and manga.

As MAL currently sadly only allows a max of 50 entries on interests stacks this list mainly prioritises the stand out and most high quality examples of avant-garde and art house anime television shows, feature films, OVAs and short film compilations. Shows/Movies of all kinds that are either meant for or can be enjoyed by an older audience. A treasure trove of excellence covering a wide range. Story-driven thrillers, well researched historical shows, brilliant world-constructions, poetic narrations, gripping thrillers, dark comedies, complex future visions, tightly packed action, avant-garde art, solid entertainment, tear-jerking dramas to light-hearted slices of lives.
No big-boob dumdums, high-pitched VAs, fan-/lip-service or plot-around-the-holes-type shows. Teenage angst and school-settings are rarities in these two lists.

The romance as a genre in it's typical sense, is a hit or miss for most of us, and this is understandable. Each of us has different outlook on life, our experience had shaped our personalities by particular ways and the way we comprehend the fragile and gentle feelings of affection within ourselves is something very personal.

But then again some stories, despite not having entirely romantic focus, can portray relationships in dynamic sense and with appropriate narrative depth. Series like these rarely gets the spotlight for this reason and are oftenly skipped by people who're usually interested solely in the romance aspect of the plots, which is one of the reasons this collection was made - as a showcase of various well written and emotionally expressive bonds of love.

The mentioned works are with broad range of genres, themes and moods, but in each of them one can find a well handled hint of, if not well explored, romance. As well as that, some romances that are breaking the mold of the usual adaptations are included, since they're rarely well explored within the medium and deserve our attention.

Avoided a bit of the really obvious ones (The Big 3 and Death Note) and some that were really similar to something already present on this list. These are anime I recommend you not miss out on in your lifetime.

Anime that have really cool and unique worlds, with an atmosphere of mystery and adventure.

Animes that have art, animation, music, etc that is not commonly found in anime.

This list includes arthouse (gonna strech this term in this list) that are have multiple episodes that from one story, so compilations like Neo Tokyo or Genius Party will not be in here.
Expect TV anime series and OVAs (they usually have 3-6 episodes 20-40 minutes each).

Regarding TV anime, here you'll find more "modern" series like Kaiba, Haibane Renmeim Flip Flappers, Sonny Boy, Artiswitch which feel a bit different from 80's shows but are still very unique compared to your typical anime so I believe they qualify.

A list of thrillers and psychological plots, made for playing with your mind and drive you mad... well, not quite, but I've found these animes that are worth for giving them a go.

Like any other media, anime conveys messages, these anime made me think and question things about life, I think we can learn and reflect a bit about ourselves and our environment after watching some of these anime. My aim is to sow a doubt that leads to meditation and with this maybe to reflection.
