Both are full of action, and have a great story.
There's a strong relationship between the 2 main characters, you can almost say they really love each other. Yuri-like, but it's not yuri at all. The character development in both these anime will make you cry.
They both have a strong first and second episode, followed by one of the most sad endings.
If you liked the one, you'll definitely like the other.

Both series have implied yuri undertones as well as violence and a dark atmosphere. Both also, however, have a LOT of light-hearted moments and great character development.
Both series are styled like an action-packed movie, and follows a linear plot with a closure ending. They're both dark, and both contain lots of violence and fighting (both combat and military), though the settings in Canaan are less futuristic than Ga-Rei's.
Both stories also concentrates on the bonds between the two main female characters, and the hardships they have to bare with the positions they happen to be in.
Both have MC that have a close sister-like relationship (Canaan x Maria / Yomi x Kagura), thus they rely on one another for emotional support. Both MC (not maria) are trained killing machines that eventually face their opposites (Alphard / Yomi eventually turns bad). Both share great character development via flashbacks.

* Both female MC's ( Yomi & Canaan ) are badass killers...
* Both have pretty awesome fighting scenes...
* Plenty of crazy supporting characters ( for example Hakko & Mei )
* Dark/Bloody/Intense storytelling...
* Both of them shares similar char designs/ backround art...which is beautiful af..
* Both have similar sad endings....
* If you like badass/cool female MC's and gunfights in every episode...you will like one of them for sure...
