Fully agree with all the others recommending Ippo. This is the nearest anime ever to the excitement and hero's journey that is played out in Ippo. Although one is boxing and the other is tennis, the methodical training, characters and epic moments are all there. It won't disappoint.

Even though HnI is about boxing and Baby Steps focuses on tennis, they're quite similar: - the protagonists are nice guys, but a bit wimpy, and complete beginners; - they meet a person who introduces them to the sport and inspires them; - they join a club outside of school; - they both have a rival to whom they look up to; - they're both in love with a certain girl; - they do have talent, but get their results through hard work.

Different sport but similar concepts. Both series build off the foundation of a group of people being involved with a sport. And for that, there are also obstacles, competitions, and the strive to succeed. For the main protagonists, they start off as fresh newbies but work their way up. It's a matter of trial and error as they discover and learn about the game they get involved in. Both series has great development with an alluring story. I recommend these two series for anyone interested in sports with a more recreational way of delivery.

As it was already recommended a few times by people, these two anime fit quite well together. It's not like they are especially similar or anything, they probably are pretty different. THe only similarity they both have is the main character type, which is a talented guy, coming into a new sport and learning it from the scratch to eventually blow up. And both main characters are very smart at what they are doing. Maruo in Baby Steps is probably one step (ha!) ahead of Ippo, if it comes to that, though.

Both anime feature a main character that's weak at first but strive to be good at the sport of their choice. Baby Steps is about tennis however while Hajime no Ippo is about boxing.

Both are very realistic and have excellent pacing. Both have really similar main characters. Both are about discovering your passion and never giving up, no matter what difficulties may cross your path. Both of our mc's become really passionate about the sports they play and we get to see their progress, which is really satisfying. All in all, I'd say both of these anime are worth your time.

The protagonist are new to the sport and is that nice guy who gets easily embarassed. They both love someone and that person will be relevant throughout the series. They had the skills from the start which they didn't use until they joined the club, they could have been legends if they started from a young age. School is a genre in both of these series although it has low presense throughout this anime. They dream of going pro. They get tons of rivals with exciting battles and will make you cheer for both teams. Last but not least both of these anime series are   read more

Although it's a different sport, it is similar since both main characters have kind hearts and in the middle of highschool both decide to practice a sport and go professional on it. They have a lot of train to catch up comparing to the others that have years on the sport. But the main characters are both courageous, determined and hard-workers. So if you like sports, or tennis itself, you might enjoy watching Baby Steps and how the main characters are so similar. Even when they react to their crushes.

The protagonists of the both shows are underdogs. They didn't have anything that they really wanted to do other than the thing they had to do. But then they came across something which they genuinely liked and wanted to continue. As the show progresses they have great development and aim higher. And both shows are inspiring.
