Hi there! :) My first exposure to anime was probably pokemon, followed by digimon and cardcaptor sakura when i was around 10, although i thought of them more like cartoons, back then. Five years later, i watched shows like Slam Dunk and Samurai X on the television, but it was only around 2 years ago that i started searching out anime and watching them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My anime preferences lean a bit more to shounen anime, although old-school stuff (dragon ball, fist of the north star) is definitely not my type. I'm a fan of sports anime, wackily funny anime, otaku-related anime, anime with lots of midnight city-fighting, anime with deep, wordy plots and anime about post-apocalytic type scenarios. Realistic characters who make realistic decisions are appreciated.
1) I dislike shallow anime. Like the later parts of Bleach and lots of those fanservice shows. I don't appreciate shows where victory in battle is measured by only one factor.
(eg, Bleach's reiatsu - the one with more reiatsu always wins!)
I also don't appreciate shows that have lots and lots of magic without a system of how it works. In that case, i hope they at least have a good plot or explore the more emotional side of things.
2) I dislike childish, spoilt, domineering and loud little girls in anime, probably because of my lack of moe blood -.-. So no Shana, no Nagi, no Haruhi...although the anime they were in were ok. I DO like the real cuties in anime though, like Pino from Ergo Proxy, Kawazoe Tamaki from Bamboo Blade, Sumomo from Chobits, Suzu from Aishiteruze Baby, and Okonogi Kyoko and Hashimoto Akira from Dennou Coil...the type of cutie that you'd like to have as your child, not the romantic interest type lol. Meaning loli stuff's not my thing. I quite like tsundere romances, actually...but not those violent types with 9 year old girls in 16-18year old bodies.
3) I also dislike anime about or which have spoiled priveledged guys who are painted in a good light, like the emperor in Saiunkoku Monogatari, all those guys in Hana Yori Dango/Meteor Garden, Ion Fortuna from Trinity Blood, and the Ouran High School Host Club boys as well, although they can forgiven because they're funny. I'm not poor, but i don't buy into all that "greatness" about company presidents and royalty. Maybe it's just another indication of shallowness to me.
4) I don't like Death Note too much. Surprised? Besides
having quite a sad ending,
I also don't like this culture of making the main characters geniuses and good at everything. And popular to boot. It's rather unrealistic, has a bit of a link with my dislike for shows like Hana Yori Dango and reminds me quite a bit of all those Taiwanese dramas pitting two young, smart, handsome and determined executives in a fight for the top dog spot and the girl. I think shows like these are just trying too hard to be cool.
5) Oh yes and i don't really care much for "act-cool" shows like Getbackers and Devil May Cry as well. Act-cool shows refer to shows that have too many actions and moves which are unneccessary or inefficient and goes against logic and are just there to look cool (eg. all that posing with Getbackers, Bleach and Devil May Cry and Yagami Light flashing that pen in certain scenes).
6) Anime based on visual novels like Kanon, etc, are also a no-no since i don't really like that big-eyed girl art style. In Kanon, for example, i found it odd that normal looking male characters were interacting with girls who looked more like stuffed toys. 0.0 I also tend to find the main male characters unappealing, like the Tokimeki Memorial boy and the always-late dude from Kanon. They mostly tend to be normal guys with laid-back attitudes, and all the girls somehow find them funny and interesting. And they tend to be rather irresponsible and forget appointments/make girls wait, but they'd still be considered "nice guys" and "gentlemen".
Which, to me, isn't the logical conclusion regular people would come to. So i think they're entertaining the fantasies of normal, laid-back and irresponsible guys, which doesn't agree with my preference for realism. Then there's also the fact that it's pretty easy to guess early on who the main character ends up with in the end...and it's never the girl i preferred!! *gaahh*...:|
6.5) Oh, and regarding anime girls, i also realise that i've got quite a huge thing against something i like to call "angel/princess personalities". People who fit into this category include Dianeira from Heroic Age, Lacus Clyne from Gundam SEED, Euphemia from Code Geass, Nia from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Sayuri from Tokimeki Memorial, etc...I think there IS such a thing as being "too nice" sometimes. Goes against my realism preference again, i suppose.
And relationships with these angel/princess personalities are usually boring as hell. Boy meets girl - who's usually of higher social status than himself. Boy falls in love with her gentleness and beauty. The girl treats the boy like she does everyone else - nicely. And he blushes everytime that happens (the girl never does much of the blushing) and swears to protect her, etc. The girl seems oddly distant from everyone because of her nice-ness to everyone, but in the end she still falls in love with the boy despite having zero chemistry with him.
Somehow, it's ok if the girl is one of the side characters, but if she's the girl the main character's in love with or whatever it just gets a little irritating. And that's not because i'm jealous, alright?? :D
7) My NUMBER ONE PET PEEVE, however, would be...stupid characters. Not the ones who fail examinations, but the ones who give their opponents chances and who tend to shout their friend's names when their friend is in trouble, over and over, without even moving to help.
Or perhaps they'd make themselves a nuisance to others because of unconsciously selfish reasons. Or they'd take risks or help a friend in order to be brave, but in the end get in trouble themselves and someone else has to sacrifice himself to help them out. And yet, in the end, their actions are viewed in a positive light.
You know what i'm talking about? Anyway, members of this classification include: Emiya Shirou from Fate/Stay Night, Kurosaki Ichigo in Bleach fillers, the anime version of Raki from Claymore, Miyagusuku Kai and (at times) Saya from Blood+, Ion Fortuna from Trinity Blood (again), at times Naruto from..u know where..and Yoshimori from Kekkaishi, and lots more...sigh anime/manga scriptwriters, what were you thinking when you decided to make these characters?
In short, REALISM please!!! unreal personalities/unreal, lacking-in-common-sense decision-making/unreal fighting techniques that look cool but leave lots of defensive holes/totally unreal looking characters/unreal-ly talented people are a total NO!!! ...Unless it's parody anime or regarding comical scenes. There's also some leeway given to worlds with "magic" which may alter the lifestyles of their people and thus their personalities and decision-making.
...At least that's how i feel. Sadly, most anime're not free from things like that so all i can say is the less there is the better.
Regardless, however, i usually try to finish watching the whole anime series even if it sucks, although i'm starting to get pickier these days. I'd still give visual novel anime and other types a chance if the plot intrigues me enough...or if the girl i preferred seems to have a chance of being picked! Hahaha! :D
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The one thing i look for in an anime that's probably different from other people is its soundtrack. I have anime favourites, but the ones which make it to the top of my list usually have very melodious and creative soundtracks, with tunes that i've grown to love. These would include anime like Noein, RahXephon, Eureka Seven and Samurai Champloo. Slam Dunk also have very good music, although i haven't found anyone who shares the same sentiments. Personally, i just love the stuff they play during basketball matches.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm quite a shy guy, but i still enjoy making new friends and meeting people with whom i can share anime suggestions with or bitch about yet another one of my pet peeves together! I've got a facebook account too, so do let me know if you've got one as well! :)
Ooo, interesting to find out you can dance ;o Sounds like a pretty rough workout though O_O I bet after you finish you crawl off to bed xD
I can't get into Ghost Hound myself. I guess the story just moves too slowly for me, the thing at the beginning of episodes where it recaps over the previous one kinda annoys me as well, what with the strange sound overs when people speak and such, it's something I can't bring myself to get used to. I guess I like animes that have more tension or fighting in them? xD Shion no Ou? Not heard of that one, might look it up later.
Higurashi is fun though, it's not really scary, but it's definitely better watched at night - The psychological aspect seemed to work better on me at that time xD. Ghost in the shell? I've heard of that, never watched an episode though. Everything I've heard about it has been kind of mixed... Might be interesting to watch though :3. Ahaha, I know what you mean with the whole thriller thing, but don't worry about that with Higurashi, it practically has you wanting more at the end of each episode :D
I think I've only seen one anime that involves a foreigner coming over. One or two anyway xD. But yeah, they either have friends already in Japan or can speak the language fluently themselves :>.
If I ever went to Japan, I'd most likely take a friend with me and tag along with them where they went. Or we'd just be indecisive of where to go and just randomly travel (That usually gets us lost, obviously xD). I can understand what you mean about how it's embarassing when you get mistaken for being a local in a foreign country, the same thing happened to me when I went to Spain - In a shop, I thought I'd say Hola to the salesperson there, then they started speaking full blown Spanish to me, which completely blew me away, but still, I thought it was pretty funny seems as I'm quite a pale person and you should be able to pretty much guess I'm a foreigner in a country like Spain on how pale I am xD (It was only my second day on holiday and the first was spent unpacking - Helping my little sisters unpack too - and getting settled in, not much time to sunbathe and such =P).
Lmao xD I have no idea why I talk so fast, but it's helpful when I want to confuse my family or friends xD It's always fun to see their faces when i say something and they can't understand it :D
Haha, quite frankly, I left my enthu days at JC, so uni life has just been study (ok, so I spend more time slacking than studying), anime and going out. It's really hard to believe that back in JC, I planned school events and was even an OGL before.
I really didn't like Ghost Hound, and it got really dry midway. Too many technical terms, you see. I mean, I watch anime to relax, and here I see all the chim psychological terms, and I spend more time figuring out the terms than the plot.
Monster looks impressive, but thinking of the great long 70 episodes of drama kinda puts me off (in case you haven't noticed, I usually watch comedy lol). Lain was pretty good, but the ending of it sucked, I think. And Ghost in the Shell is just not my type (scifi/drama. Heck, even the highly acclaimed Darker than Black was just average to me)
Not gonna watch the Dark Knight. For some strange reasons, I've always detested the DC heroes. Superman, Batman, Teen Titans, Wonderwoman, Catwoman etc. All reall aren't my type of heroes. I much prefer Marvel. Spidey, X-men, Ironman etc. Maybe it's due to MvC's influence XD.
It's getting difficult to voodoo stuff, huh? I can't find anywhere got voodoo DS games too. Heck, even anime. I spent weeks and weeks just to voodoo Slayers Next, only to get and English Dub version, with English subs. How "great" was that? Only thing that was good about it was that I got to hear the voice actors that did Pokemon for the first 8 seasons, so it's quite nostalgic, since I followed Pokemon till they changed the voice actors at the ninth season.
Wow. I take it back! After watching the complete series of Monster, I'm going to say that it definitely does get better o.o
It may drag at first, but the last 10 or so episodes are probably what make the show so "epic" as people say xD ... But seems as there's 60 other episodes, I'm still going to give it a 9... Still, a must watch: even if it is just for the ending :D
Lmao, aww poor you, you're going to have to work so hard when it comes 'round to your University course ;o
Hot Spring... Lmao, reminds me of so many different animes that seem to have one for some reason or other xDD Gah, wish I could go to Japan - I wouldn't even know where to visit though o_o Does sound like a difficult place to get around though o.o... I'd be one of those tourist carrying around a Japanese/English dictionary lmao xD (Do they even make them? >.>). Naturally they speak faster! It's their native language =P ... I speak English so fast even my parents have to tell me to slow down sometimes <- Seriously O_O Probably the reason why I can generally understand people who talk fast :D That definitely won't apply to any other language though >.>
Oh! Never heard of Anime Eden... But the problem with my computer is if it gets anymore junk on here it'd literally stop x.x (My brother downloads crappy emulators and stuff for PS1/GBA games o_o)... I think I already checked Crunchyroll (Veoh and CR and basically the main streaming anime sites I watch ^^)
I know someone's who's pretty much obsesed with Code Geass, watched the first series and where the second series is upto in one night... Scary person =P . I really should give animes a chance though, usually it's if they don't hook me in right at the beginning I won't watch more episodes (Even though I only watched 3 episodes of Code Geass, that's really giving it a chance seems as I didn't really get into it, I'd usually only watch one then go onto a different anime - Like I did with Mushishi and Kare Kano xD).
Fan service people don't notice? Didn't think that was possible.. Maybe they're too distracted by everything else or look over it 'cause they like all the other aspects so much? There is the possibilty that alot of them might find it kinda normal so don't bother mentioning it, but that's highly unlikely :D
Monster? I'm 90% sure you were the person who recommened that to me xD I assumed you'd already seen it? o_o Hnm, about whether it's good or not, I wouldn't say it's one of those masterpieces like the majoriy of MAL (Those who have seen it anyway) claim it to be. It takes a while to get into the story properly, practically 20 episodes of it so far have been as though they're trying to convince the audience that Tenma is innocent (Not like we didn't already know that >.>). I think it mainly relies on the psychological aspect of the series, and seems as that isn't really doing anything for me, it's going to lower my rating for it... Not much though, I'd still give it a 8 or 9... I think this is another of those series that people on here have got me really hyped up for, and it just isn't meeting the expectations that everyone's set for me x.x
It's at an interesting point right now, but I wouldn't really want to ruin the series for ya :D
Wow, sounds like you'll be busy for a while. NUS is tough because everyone's vying for the best, faculties included. I think you shouldn't watch any long story/drama types. So I recommend against Kimikiss, which isn't very good to begin with. Higurashi is alright, since there's a bit of comedy in it, and every arc doesn't last too long. Shion no Oh has brillant storyline, but no comedy. You night like Ghost Hound, but when I watched it, it took a ton of energy out of me. I just can't watch the too serious types that has slow plot development.
Actually, all 3 of the mecha I've mentioned has comical aspects. Just about the 2 non-comedy mecha I liked were Evangelion and Gundam Wing.
I think you should give the other 2 FMP anime a try. If not for the comedy, fine, just skip Fummofu, and go on to the Second Raid. Storyline's made very well, and you don't get to see much of that harisen-whacking the original was so famous for, or much of the klutzy Sousuke.
Code Geass has its flaws, lots of them. But what won me over was the fact that I actually liked the battles, which isn't very often by my standards. Also, I liked the lack of focus on the Mecha, as it was more on the pilots. Very unlike the Gundam anime, where the mecha is everything. Which is also why I sorta liked TTGL.
Yeah, people that frequently watch anime is rare, strangely enough. I was lucky enough to know a girl in my uni that watches alot of anime too. And not the well-known types too. There are others, but they're the more common Narutos, D.Gray-Mans and Code Geasses.
Well, Guilty Gear has it's charms, since it is the last remaining 2D fighting game, especially since the new age Street Fighter game is just plain bad. If I recall, even KOF has switched to 3D, which frankly is a wrong move to me.
Gah! You're in Japan? *Jealous* ... I'm not as jealous as I could be though, seems as you're there studying xD You should take a break from studying as well! Go see some sights... Not sure what sights are in Japan, but go see 'em anyway :D ... It'll be bad to just study non-stop whilst you're over there, you won't be able to concentrate, what with being in such a great country =P Wait, I've never been to Japan... How is it?
Most people in Britain watch soaps like the one I mentioned, so I guess they like that kinda thing xD I think it's pretty boring, even with such an eccentric plot! Maybe it is because the plot lines have become cliche, like you said? o.o
If it's hard to find, I'd probably give up searching for it before it's found! That's what I usually do xD Come to think of that kinda hard to find thing, have you heard of an anime called Hundred Stories (Probably better known as Requiem from the darkness)? If ya have, d'ya know where I can watch with Eng subbing? The whole series was on Veoh at one point, but they've been taken off for some reason or other and the majority of the other sites that claim to have it on use Veoh to upload their videos, so the links don't work xD
Ah! Basically put, you like a well balanced character? ^^ When it comes to Light, it's not about how he improves throught DN, just about how he can outwit someone at the same level of thinking as him - Something he's never really gone against before ^^ ... Only seen 3 episodes of Code Geass and I think people on MAL managed to hype it up too much for me...
I kind of watch series that aren't completed, but I think I'm slowly learning my lesson... Like with xxxHolic Kei now - The series has been finished for around a month now but the last two episodes are yet to be subbed x.x (Possibly due to it being licensed apparently =/ ). I get what you mean with the "fresh in my mind" thing as well xD .. There was one anime where it referred to something that had happened previously in the series and 'cause I had to wait for them to come out weekly, I'd forgotten about the event that it was referring to xD So I had to skip back to make sure I fully understood why it was being referenced in the first place :D
Code Geass is one of the best Mecha I've seen, given the fact i ain't very fond of Mecha. It, Along with Nadesico and FMP are probably top of the mecha in my book. But the second season of it is kinda sub standard. I'm not as fond of it as I used to be either.
BECK is, well, I don't think it's my genre. So I'll probably wait till I have nothing left to watch before I watch it. XD
Competative society... Right... XD
Still, I couldn't really care less about my results unless it is a team effort. If its my own work, I'd just aim for a pass, which strangely enough I still do better than those really kan chiong people.
Wow, the way you say it, you must have really spent alot of time at arcades training up your MvC2 standard! I ain't really that good at the game, so I get really impressed seeing some of those guys really whoop ass in the arcades. Do you play Guilty Gear too? I think it's like the last remaining 2D fighting game that's really prolific. I think its a pretty fast paced game, kinda like KOF style.
Not true about female otakus, you know. I have seen a couple of pretty cute ones around, though they will never admit they are otakus. XD
I like Kujibiki Unbalance because of the fact that despite the fact that it is a parody, and a randomly made 3 episodes, I saw the entire storyline really well. Too bad it was never made into a real anime! The alternately made one in 2006 has the same "characters" (The chairman, the lead guy, the mushroom girl, the glasses girl from the first episode and her sidekicks etc), but has an entirely different storyline. Would have been so much more intelligent for them to have done the Genshiken one.
Damn, I accidentally scrolled up and lost everything I typed >< Time to restart xD
To me, introducing a new girl half way through, when a romance kinda thing is already established, just seems to lengthen the anime and develop an unnecessarily complex plot... Although it does tend to make a series more interesting so I overlook it =D
Hahaha, I'd like to watch a korean/singaporean drama now.. Sounds humourous xD Is that kind of thing big in Singapore? Over here it's always about how something that doesn't happen everyday, happens to the same people on one street (Coronation Street/Eastenders) - For example, a woman agrees to become a Surrogate mother, then decides not to after her baby is born and her motherly love kicks in - Then the person who was supposed to receive the baby after birth decides to go a little psycho (Even though being a respected and well-mannered GP) and attempts to the murder former surrogate mother and kidnap the baby for herself (This is an actual storyline from the show... xD). Oh! And with every marriage that's in the programme, the husband or wife always seems to have an affair, gets found out, their marriage hits crisis mode - Then there's a 50% chance there's going to be a divorce or be forgiven (If they're forgiven the person who had the affair continues having affairs and such...)
Such crappy storylines are what makes me turn to anime... Much more interesting to watch ;D Oh, it doesn't help that Britain's going some form of reality TV/quiz show/talent show fetish... Really quite annoying x.x
Hmm, even by saying the main character's a weak person makes Beck sound even more interesting, usually a main character can deal with problems xD and when they can't they go off, think for a little while (Tends to be one or two episodes) then are able to defeat whatever the problem was! So, yeah, a weak character should be interesting =D
I like Soul Eater's animation ^^
Alot of the characters' emotions/reactions to things tend to be a little goofy and over the top... Some examples:
But, it's pretty funny that way ^^, plus it does go with the characters' personalities xD
I can't really comment on the fight scenes.. I'd say you'd better check them out for yourself to get an opinion on 'em xD
The settings tend to be interesting as well xD... One thing that tends to irritate the people I've talked to are the moon and sun... No idea why 'cause it doesn't bother me, I find they help set the scene/atmosphere, for example say if a character was talking about some murderous plot, the moon/sun would drool blood.
For those that might read this and would like to know where I got the avatars from, message me and I'll send you a link xD >.>
Going back to the topic =P From images on Google, I'd say Denno Coil's animation probably wouldn't bug me either... I think it's similar to something else I've seen, can't think what though.
well if you wana see another basketblll anime you could try dash kappei though that anime doesn't take itself seriously, tyeah it's nothing like slam dunk butthey both have basketball + comedy.
Oh, yeah, Ogiue is great, but I liked the cosplay girl too. Forgotten her name already, but yeah she's great, and I like the idea of otakus coupling up! XD
Haha, yeah you did, but my com ain't really fit for gaming. As of now, it's just my animing and homework machine. The highest technology game on my com is Football Manager. XD
Not much of a platformer, I see. Well, neither am I, really. I never really liked Sonic or Mario, but there are some that I do like. Nights is one, and i like some of the Rockman games too. I also liked some of those old school style arcade games, like Street of Rage, or Golden Axe.
Haha, well, I finished the whole Genshiken series, and I liked it quite a bit. Wasn't all that fond of the OVA, but season 2 was great, and frankly, so to was the 3 epi Kujibiki Unbalance, which was amazing for 3 randomly made episodes. Too bad the alternate 2006 version was nothing like that one! -_-
Wii, I have quite a few targets in my mind. Nights is a childhood favourite of mine, and they finally have a sequel. It plays like a Sonic game, but with flying. A truly great game back during its Saturn days. You should get it if you do get a Wii. Others would be Okami, Trauma Centre, SSBB, for now. Of course, I have heard Tales of Symphonia II is out on Wii too.
Well, frankly, you're still at the good part of the plot of Spice and Wolf. It doesn't get any better, though the comparison to Haruhi and xxxholic is... kinda weird, IMO.
S&W's problem is that it has the potential to be so much better, only for them to switch its focus to Horo as a wolf rather than Horo as an oppotunistic trader.
I've finally set my mind straight to watch Genshiken. It's pretty good so far. With this I can finally say I'm no where near being an otaku yet! XD
Can't say I've been having any problems with MAL recently... I usually leave my account logged on at home so the only time I have to actually manually log in would be on College computers. But, no problems there o.o
Lmao, I don't prefer love triangles, if a series I'm watching has one I might think to myself "Who is she going to choose?" but I only think that if I really like the anime xD ... Plus, I think I've kinda watched too many anime involve love triangles... There's alot that somehow make them spring up when they're not supposed to be there! Hmm, I never considered the fact that Vampire Knight actually has one in o.o Eurgh, don't recommend Naruto to anyone xDD
Yes, I tend to hate most female characters in anime... No idea why... Maybe it's 'cause they're usually the ones who don't fit the realistic thing xD Or usually the ones who fit it least anyway... In most of the animes I've seen they're often portrayed as weak, mentally and physically also... Another thing I don't like... AND more often than not, they're the characters that tend to get depressed and what not... I guess none of this applies to the characters from Bamboo Blade though ;D
Y'know the whole "at LEAST she isn't some daughter of a rich man, and she isn't good in all sports and scores very well for her exams to boot" sounds as though you're taking a dig at L or Light >.> Tsk tsk ;o But, yeah people should think about how they word characters' profiles xD
Yup, that's a pangolin... I thought that at first as well xD I guess maybe it's just the shape? But doesn't Miya Miya say Dan feels like one as well? o.o No idea how that's possible? Wow, you really like Tama xDD Yes, her voice is very cute... But that doesn't stop Miya Miya from being my favourite character from the series (Even in her depressive scenes!): Don't worry though, Tama definitely comes in at a close second =D
To be honest, I don't care much about the animation style of an anime... Alot of people call Soul Eater crap based on it's unique animation style and don't watch much of it, but if they gave the series a chance, they'd become used to it xD Which is why, if I was to write a review for an anime I'd been watching/completed I'd give the animation style a top score even if it was done badly (As long as the storyline/characters were good)... The only anime I'd probably give a low score for animation would be Hitsuji no Uta... With it having characters with a vampiric kind of illness they sometimes get "hunger" thirsts... And when that happens they always use the same repetitive thing and it gets really annoying... So, I'd probably be able to watch Beck without any complaints concerning animation xDD
Is Beck any good? I've heard it's supposed to be, but I'd prefer an opinion from someone I've talked to rather than read the reviews of people I don't know o.o
