This movie is better than Kimi no Na wa even though same criticism I made about Kimi no Na wa applies here- how far do you go to imitate the cinema? The eventual outcome may be that anime is no longer recognized as one: one that stick to the format of television the other cinema.

However, I am not disappointed by this movie despite the cliche story. It deals with the issue of bullying at school, teenage suicide etc. It is very subtle and the details are very emotional. Sound is crucial for this film and soundtrack did a good job.

Mixed Feelings
When anime is overtly trying to be realistic and cinematic, the lines between cinema and anime are further blurred. This might be a good thing for the wider reception of anime in cinemas (especially outside Japan) but not necessarily a good thing because 'anime' starts to take the medium itself too seriously.

Each scene is 'crafted' to look great in the isolated frame and it does demonstrate the animation technologies of Makoto Shinkai's anime movies - from Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru to Kotonoha no Niwa. This is not to blame Makoto Shinkai and his amazing achievement as an animator, editor and cinematographer, but not as ...

Prison School (Anime) add
I remember watching deadmen wonderland, another prison break themed show. But prison school is something different. It's a comedy. Nothing is serious. It will make you laugh, a lot.
Is it pure male fantasy? Maybe it is. Then the final male fantasy is to be female, to take up the female gender role. It is not like that gender reversed Cinderella story (I forgot the name of that movie). I am not sure what it is. It is brilliant in terms of portraying and ridiculing that masochist male fantasy that seems to be the mainstream in Japan, which is a very very patriarchal society ...

I didn't get hooked by a scifi themed anime since EVA. This anime is exceptional not because psychological thriller, suspense, philosophical dialogues, or intriguing stories. The most striking feature for me is the architectural style of the interior of the space ship. This is likely related to Nihei Tsutomu's experiences as an architecture student. Yes, it terms of art style, you can see it is heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell and the Japanese cyperpunk genre. However, the uniqueness of Sidonia no Kishi is the meticulous drawings of the verticality of the residential buildings within Sidonia, which seems to be contextual but in fact ...

easily one of the best sci-fi anime.
redefinition of humanity is certainly necessary with the emergence of self-awareness of AI. Conflicts will not always take place. Coexistence and mutal understanding can be easily acheived after breaking that 'barrier' of rigid definition of humanity.

Sankarea (Anime) add
Preliminary (3/12 eps)
I give a very positive review of this series even though I have only watched 3 episodes. I want to keep it short. Since I will come back later to write a longer review.

The most unique thing is the story- a relationship/romance between a zombie and human.
Movies that adopted this plot existed before but I don't believe any anime has done this.

Equally splendid plot is that the girl Sanka actually chose to become a zombie to liberate herself from the patriarchal control of her hypocritical father. The idea that being undead as a liberation from the reality is definitely not new as ...
