You are right, I guess it's what people usually call as fillers? Sometimes it can help build attachment to a character, but most of the time it does feel unnecessary.

Hello there! To answer your question, I think I just enjoy anime and manga differently. I expect an ending or just a goal when I watch anime, so I put more importance with the story rather than the characters. I want to look forward to next episode to be motivated to continue watching the show. I with manga, I don't really expect to reach an ending when reading manga, and a lot of times I enjoy them because of the characters. Since I can control the pacing more with manga, I can get into an episodic manga faster and reach that point where I am engaged with the characters.
