Death Note is easily the most well-thought-out anime I have ever seen. Unlike some anime that you have to watch a few episodes to get into, Death Note hooks you instantly by combining the supernatural with a real-life moral dilemma. The atmosphere is the perfect combination of dark, witty and thought-provoking. The characters, despite their utter genius, are just flawed enough to make it extremely interesting. Light Yagami, for example, is perfect. Good-looking, popular and extremely smart. Throw in the fact that he's kind of evil, and you've got yourself an awesome story.
One of my few complaint is that

it got a little too slow toward the middle. It was too drawn out... I feel that a lot of characters that were added later were unnecessary, and also that a lot of things could have been omitted. I feel that the story would have been more profound if it had been more concise. Another thing that bothered me was the ending. It was too tidy, and did not leave a lot of unanswered questions, not to mention it was very abrupt.
That being said, this is still my favorite anime of all time. It is a must-see.

I am usually not into "girly," anime such as this one because I find it trivial and and goofy. I thought I was going to end up dropping it, but by the 3rd episode, I was hooked.
There are many endearing characters in this anime, the utmost being Tsukimi, the main character. She is just too adorable. You can't resist sympathizing with her, and I think a lot of us girls who are into anime can relate to her. The jellyfish theme is unique, beautiful and entertaining. a lot of other aspects of the plot, such as the pasts of both Tsukimi and Kuranosuke. Like in any good story, a lot is implied rather than stated.
I was disappointed by Kuranosuke's role. I picked this anime mostly because it's a gender-bender anime, but Kuranosoke's being a boy does not add much excitement or depth to the plot, although his character is quite likeable. Although I like the idea of the "otaku house," that the girls stay in, the girls themselves are not likeable characters. (Excepting Tsukimi.) They are all very closed-minded, rude and self-centered. I expected them to mature a little bit over the series, but it didn't really happen.
The ending was unfulfilling, but, seeing as this anime is so new, I imagine there might be more on the way.

This is an amazing psychological thriller, and also VERY characteristic of Satoshi Kon. If you generally enjoy his work, it's likely that you'll enjoy this movie. I don't recommend asking people about it or reading about it before you watch it, because it's much better if you let it play out and surprise you.
The art leans toward the realistic side, as opposed to some of the spider-legged, large-eyed characters in other anime. The imagery is absolutely perfect. It really speaks to the story and to the viewer.

who and what's what. It raises a lot of questions in the realm of the individual perception of reality, and it also explores a lot of the possible answers. This anime is NOT for people who enjoy clear stories and closure. You have to open your mind and follow Mima on her psychological journey.

This anime follows in the footsteps of a young traveler, Kino, and her Motorcycle, Hermes. Each episode tells the story about their journey to a different country. Through the art of story-telling, we learn about the people, laws, customs, etc. in each country, and what their significance is in the greater scheme of life. This anime is guaranteed to make you reflect upon yourself.
Kino is a very easy character to become attached to. Everybody can relate to her because she does not represent any specific group of people. She is not particularly feminine or masculine, and her age

is ambiguous. Her defining quality is her wisdom and quickness, which makes her easy to admire. Hermes only aids in her endearment, always asking questions and challenging Kino's opinions. Their dialogue is witty and thought-provoking.
The only complaint that I have is that the pace was rather slow. The quirky, hyperactive characters that are usually present in anime are few in this one, which I sort of like because it allows me to take the show more seriously. However, the way it drags on sometimes made me feel bored.
Nonetheless, I really enjoy it because it's unique and intelligent, and yet it's not too heavy. If you're looking to have a zen kind of experience, this is the anime for you :)

Being a future educator myself, this story really warmed my heart. I admit, the story is a little bit stupid and, yes, VERY far-fetched. However, you have to be willing to keep an open mind and look deeper, because the truth is, this story is about love, gender equality, and acceptance of others and of the self. Specifically, though, it is about the equal treatment of MEN. I enjoyed that they focused on this, because these days everything is usually about women being mistreated.
The art is nothing special, and neither is the soundtrack. It's like any other school kid drama in that aspect. I wish

Let me just get this out of the way: (without giving too much away) YES, the main relationship between two characters is unrealistic and inappropriate under all circumstances. I want to stress that I do not condone that kind of behavior from a grown man. However, to enjoy this show, you have to look past the creepy stuff because, after all, it's just TV. DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU ARE EASILY SHOCKED/DISGUSTED BY SOCIAL SCANDALS. Though you're all anime connoisseurs, so I'm sure you're used to it by now ;)
Weird stuff aside, I can say that the main protagonist, Hibiki, is one of the most admirable characters I have ever encountered. His goal in life is to become a gym teacher and change the lives of children for the better. When he enters Seito Sannomiya Private School disguised as a woman, he enters with the intent of proving a point to the man-hating administration: that people should be judged by their character, not by their gender. As for the school kids, they were actually a very realistic group of middle schoolers. You know.. hormonally messed up, unsure of what's right, impressionable.
I think that the LGBT community (or anyone who supports) would enjoy this because it has themes about accepting sexuality. Really anyone who's into civil rights will enjoy this.

I enjoyed the ideas that this movie presented. What if humans are part computers in the future? What moral/political/emotional, etc. problems does that cause? What is the definition of "human"? All very deep and important questions, especially in our generation, in which technology is growing at an exponential rate. I would categorize this as science fiction, but it's almost like the opposite of historical fiction... futuristic fiction. (Haha.) By that I mean it's not just made up. a profound piece of artwork. The ending was very open ended, which I personally did not enjoy, but that's just personal preference, I suppose. I suppose it's intent was to leave you to think about it.
The artistic interpretation of the future is phenomenal. It's one of those beautiful cityscape animes that we all know and love.
I did not find the sound to be anything special... Mostly because I didn't notice it.
The only characters I really ended up caring about were Kusanagi and the puppet master. Even then, they were a bit cold and difficult to sympathize with. Though I suppose they were part or completely computers, so that makes sense.
Even though I acknowledge that this is a well-made movie, I personally did not enjoy it much. I found it to be slow moving, and it didn't have enough passion to make me care enough about what happened. It was over very quickly, and I felt that it lacked sufficient closure. I recognize that not all movies have complete closure, but I would have liked a little more. Also, I felt as though it lacked actual substance and that it was predictable. If you read a synopsis before you watch this, you'll pretty much have everything spelled out for you.
That being said, you'll definitely enjoy this if you're into hard-core sci-fi and futuristic anime. Even if you're not, I would say it's worth watching.

If you are willing to open your mind and actively watch this anime, I guarantee you will have a profound and fulfilling experience. I know that sounds kinda corny, but seriously. Though the way the story actually plays out is incredibly wacky, this is a story that everyone on the face of the earth can relate to. This is a story about the consequences of denying the truth, of placing the blame on someone other than yourself. This series touches on many subjects in a short period of time, and it does it very gracefully.

use of color/light to portray certain emotions and situations. I think what I admired most was the contrast. Since it's kind of a wacky anime, the art style was varied throughout the story. All were equally beautiful and appropriate for the story.
The soundtrack to this is one of my favorites. Similar to the artwork, the different sounds used in the series were varied according to what was happening in the plot. However, the music all had cute, mysterious, electronic vibe to it. It was whole-toney and felt like it spun around energetically in my brain.
Character development was a job well done, especially considering how much material the series covered. It seemed to me that when a character was introduced, the writers knew just what to expose about so that we could get to know very quickly, but not in a way that was painfully obvious. It was like good flash fiction.
I gave this anime a perfect score. I think that's reason enough for you to at least give it a chance after reading this :) It's a perfect blend of a murder mystery and an extreme psychological thriller.

The reason I wanted to watch this movie in the first place was because of the plot line. It was creative and engaging. Not something you see every day. Often times I find the plots of anime movies to be a bit dry and irrelevant to my human existence, but this story really had a lot of thought put into it. Upon seeing the poster, I knew this movie would be beautiful. The vibrant nature of the artwork in the dreams is a great contrast to the amount of grave danger the main characters often find themselves in. Beautiful red-headed, big-eyed Paprika is obviously also a nice touch.
I found the soundtrack to be very similar to that of Paranoia Agent. (Which I loved.) It's very open and whole-toney, a wonderful contrast to the dire consequences of failure.
The characters seemed a little one-dimensional, in my humble opinion, but that may have been because their minds were being intercepted half the time. It was difficult to keep track of who was friends, who was enemies, who wanted what, who was on whose side, etc. However, thus is the nature of life. I felt as though there was a lack of genuine character development by the end. Key word "genuine," because there was a clear intention to have the characters discover things about themselves.
This movie had an inviting atmosphere. You'll like it if you enjoy psychological thrillers and that weird, nonsensical stuff that sometimes goes on in anime. You know what I'm talking about.

Although this anime doesn't have many constants throughout the series, the flow of the story is beautiful and has a calming effect. Each episode reveals something more about the nature of the Mushi, and if you use the knowledge you gained from previous episodes, you gain a deeper understanding about the situations that occur. The happenings are always varied; sometimes there's a happy ending and sometimes there's a sad ending, but sometimes it isn't that simple. emotion and internal conflict attached to each Mushi-related situation.
I love visually discovering each different type of Mushi throughout the show. They all vary in shape, color and movement, though you can find similarities between them. One Mushi might appear in the form of a rainbow, while another will take on the shape of a dragon. All in all a beautifully executed concept.
I'm not usually struck so deeply by anime soundtracks, but this one really took hold of me. Just as the show flows like a calm, steady river, so does the music. It fits perfectly with the content of the show. It sounds like something I would do yoga or meditate to. It accurately depicts the flow of nature.
Ginko, the Mushi-Shi whose journey we follow, is calm and mysterious, much like the Mushi he studies. Watching the show, I felt as if I got to know Ginko better with each episode. Though nonchalant and unattached to any one person or place, he cares very much about the people he encounters and helps. Through this, we come to care deeply as well.
Mushi-Shi is not for you if you like things that are fast-paced, witty and/or highly comedic. It is for people who love the supernatural, nature, and perhaps are looking for something they can relate to on an emotional level.

I guarantee that this manga will not be what you expect it to be, and I mean that in a positive way. If you like stories with a clear sense of closure to everything, this is not for you. A lot is not explicitly explained, and that's what I loved about it. I liked that each chapter could be read individually and still be interesting, and yet each chapter built off of the previous ones in a unique way. It wasn't so much that there was a clear cut story, but each piece gave you a different kind of insight into

the situation itself. The thing I loved most was that the story began in a relatively normal town that was a little strange, but by the end, everything became completely chaotic and terrifying. That's why it's important to keep reading if you're bored with it at first; a lot of changes occur throughout the story.
If you're into the macabre, you'll find the images intriguing. A lot of human disfigurement goes on, which is interesting to look at, though at times very terrifying. Like I said earlier, it's interesting to watch everything go from a little strange to completely horrifying, on a storyline level as well as from a visual perspective.
Read this if you want to be freaked out and have your mind scrambled!
