Happy birthday from Australia!

What did you think of season 1 anyway? You've almost finished it.
Sayaka Mar 7, 2017 1:43 AM
Heads up, Nisemonogatari is MUCH more fanservice-y than the rest of the series, so if you don't like that stuff, just know it is the nearly as prominent later in the series. Try to bear it as much as you can (unless you like that stuff, in which case, I guess you'll love it)

Sounds great. It's a series Iove to discuss.
Sayaka Feb 18, 2017 2:40 PM
Hah, I'm not revealing anything. You're right in the arcs aren't ever completely happy or dark, usually riding the middle. Hitagi Crab for example was pretty messed up even though it had a happy ending, but then again, the show is mainly about helping people deal with aberrations, so that's probably to be expected. There are a few arcs that are super dark though thematically, but it's never in a grotesque way; more atmospheric.

The cat one you mentioned is one of my favourite arcs in the show. Hanekawa is my favourite and it totally does her justice.

Watching it slowly is actually fine I think. Most arcs are 2, 3 or 4 episodes (excluding one way later on which is 6, but is also considered the best arc in the series by most), so spacing them out isn't an issue.

Also can I just show how amazing some of the OPs are? Both visually and musically. I won't mention arc names or seasons, nor list any spoiler-having OPs

They're just so wonderful

Airing order is the way to go (with one exception imo)

  • Bakemonogatari
  • Nisemonogatari
  • Nekomonogatari:Kuro
  • Monogatari Series: Second Season (depending on what service you use, this might be renamed as 5 separate seasons called Nekomonogatari:Shiro, Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari and Koimonogatari)
  • Hanamonogatari
  • Tsukimonogatari
  • Owarimonogatari
  • Koyomimonogatari
  • Kizumonogatari

Kizumonogatari is a series of 3 films, and only 2 are out. Watch them literally whenever you want; they're chronologically first in the series, so they don't spoil anything.

The only change I'd make to that list would be skip Hanamonogatari entirely until Zokuowarimonogatari comes out, or until you finish Koyomimonogatari, at which point you can decide (also don't look at the names of future arcs. Some are huge spoilers). It's a self-contained arc but it spoils something huge from Koyomimonogatari that is explored in Zoku. You don't have to skip it but I definitely would.

The first few seasons (Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari and Nekomonogatari:Kuro) are all comprised of 3-4 episode arcs featuring a new character, or to build off of existing ones. An overarching story arises later on but it's not super important initially, though the season that introduces it (Second Season, which is actually the 4th season lol) is the highest rated on MAL. For now it's mostly introducing, developing and getting the viewer to like them (which varies, of course, but I love the cast, even the jerks)

The text flashes aren't necessary - they are excerpts from the novel which give a cool insight to the narrator's (usually Araragi but it changes depending on who the arc's protagonist is) thoughts.

You have seen Madoka, which is another SHAFT work.

Oh, you're finally watching the Monogatari series! It's my favourite! It's very strange but it hooked me really fast.

Happy 19th from Australia!
It’s time to ditch the text file.
