Gross, to be totally honest. the experience watching this vs watching season 1 is night and day. Season one is a fun, nostalgic, action-filled, generally well-thought out anime which, while not being a mature or super unique anime, at least had this loveable spark that made it irresistible and this season- this first half of it at least that this page is for is thoughtless, generic, careless, and edgy.

Now, if the show got dark, that would be fine- honestly it would be interesting. But it doesn't get dark it get's edgy and frankly dull, and disgustingly so too. No regrets or thought at all for very big and profound actions and no emotion or weight to whatever shams of emotion they try to shove in.
And the fights, I am not a fan of action shows in general. I don't get it. But I'm not soulless, I like a great fight scene that makes you go "OH!" and GASP and other monke sounds too. Other than a decapitation, the fights are pretty boring. If not solely for the fact that the fights are pointless and usually with characters we either don't care about, or whom fighting could probably be talked around if Rimuru decided to actually keep talking.

Nothing has any weight in the show, especially not death. I mean, we can't let anyone we know die, noooooo forget we did last season and it was very sweet and interesting. The waifu must live :,( . And then Rimuru fucking kills thousands of innocent people with 0% mercy. It was honestly disgusting to watch; and they didn't want it to be, they wanted genocide to be "cool" and "cold-blooded." Well, it wasn't. it felt completely out of character and fucking stupid and childish in the bad ways.
But, yknow, the show is very fast paced and thus despite all its issues it's easy to sit through and watch and I admit even has its good, charming VERY FEW moments. The show is popular, I'll sit through its grossness just so I can at least talk to other anime fans. I loved the first season so much, I am utterly stupified at how they could fuck it up this bad.

Look I don't care to be labelled as someone who likes everything too much I adored this anime. I am quickly reigniting my dream to be a mother. I promise I won't swear like this in front of kids. Anyway-!!!!!

This anime is the cutest, the absolute cutest. It even has some emotional stuff in there, its just intoxicatingly sweet.

The thing I look for most in any anime is good characters, or characters you just instantly latch onto. And all the characters in this are absolutely latch-able! Latch to the able! They're all incredibly endearing and memorable. It's not the fuckin Mona Lisa of chracters okay, ... but for a comedy slice of life this is about as grand as they get. It's not a romance btw but the girls who like Ryuuichi are wonderful, and well-written. You can understand why they would like him- I mean- fuck- imma be honest I would too at least for a bit- and it's just really good. For not being a romance, I think the way they act is very realistic.

And it's shockingly well animated and drawn, I don't think there was ever a bad frame tbh. Extremely high quality. The backgrounds were great too, just a super solid production.

I highly recommend this anime, I'm sure your enjoyment of it will depend on how much it interests you but if cute kids being cute kids interests you I think this is probably the best option, you will say "Awww" so much, like, so much.

I'm deciding to write a review for every anime I watch here-on since I'm starting to watch too many in a short span of time and feel like a loser. So first off with that is Anohana, which was... a tad sucky

I have never had such mixed feelings on a show before, by the way, in this review I'm giving it a 6/10 but I have it as a 7 ftr because despite everything wrong with it it was still excellently executed and touched me emotionally

Also I think this review will have SPOILERS so be warned

Anohana is about a girl, Menma/Meiko, comin' back to ... haunt her childhood friend,Jintan, in order to have him grant her final wish(which- she doesn't know what that wish is btw) nobody can see her but him but she can still interact with things. Which is probably the most annoying thing about the anime, half of the damn show is spent with characters fighting Jintan over whether she is actually here or not and him barely even trying to prove it, just accepting that he looks like an insane person arguing with the air and blushing at ghost A-cups over here until WAY too late in the show

Moreover I don't feel like the wish business goes much of anywhere, I kinda finished off the anime wondering wtf that vague-ass wish was and just crying along with everyone

Generally speaking though, although almost all the characters can be grating and the story has quite a few holes I think they're both actually pretty well done. Particularly Naruko, I almost put her in my favorite characters. I related quite a lot to her and she was understandable to an extent. But the thing for all of them... minus Poppo... is that it's all to an extent. There is hardly any reason for these characters acting as melodramatic as they are.

Naruko is jealous of this girl for stealing her crush, Jintan and Tsuyuki are going ballistic with serious romantic type love for this literal 5 year old who has been dead for like, 10 years. Tsuyuki, who I want to talk about SO bad, is both the best and worst part of this show because this man is so crazy, he's actually insane. He crossdresses as Menma and runs around the woods at night and he sniffs a dress of Menma's that he keeps in his closet- along with his wig, naturally- every night. It is so fucking stupid I love it so much.

The love triangle, er square is just ridiculous, I love romance so I didn't mind and like I said I relate to Naruko so I get the feelings but I think it is just too much. None of it is settled by the end and the idea of these two men and subsequent two girls fighting over their attention and how much they love a dead elementary schooler is just nonsensical.

Poppo btw, the big guy, I just want to talk about him because I love him. He has probably the most logical reason and yet Jintan to feel very upset by her death and feel guilt. He saw her body floating by in the water after her accident and was too scared by the image and feelings to do anything. He is the best part of the anime, he brings so much more life to everything. It feels like the other characters have not had a happy moment in their lives since Menma died, and I think that is really annoying.

I still liked the anime, I still cried with it and I enjoyed the ending balling my eyes out just like everyone else but I just think overall it wasn't a great show. A beautiful show definitely but not a great written one.

I don't think it's amazing but damn if I didn't enjoy every second of it. Definitely not what I expected. Maybe this is a bit harsh but this would be a good movie to watch as a couple because it has a lot of accidentally funny moments to make fun of but will probably make you cry all the same. A lot to talk about.

Ironically I don't HAVE much to talk about but basically I think it was kinda cringey and some designs and frames here and there were funny looking or awkward BUT that is something that is so charming about it. You can ... laugh, it doesn't feel like a crime. All my favorite crying sessions have a couple laughs here and there lol. And underneath all the stuff that's hard to take seriously you can't help but feel somethin' deeper. It's sweet and keeps you guessing. You'll accidentally fall for it.

Even if it's a bit awkward at times you can't help but feel the genuineness in it, it's great. I'm very happy I watched it.

Hey! This anime reminds me of all you pessimistic motherfuckers dragging me down! Haha jk, genuinely though this anime centers on a very suicidal man :) and laughs at it :) and it's fucking hysterical :)

Anyways, soorrry, just did that cuz I'm bad at hooks. FTR, I'm reviewing the series as a whole here. And also, there are some circumstances with this series that idk- uh- well- the 8 score is probably a bit low? if I ever rewatch it I think the score would go up basically.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a fantastic comedy anime, and do not be fooled- despite the fact that I'm ... gonna talk about a couple more serious things about it that I like you should not go in expecting anything but a really funny comedy anime with some clever and sometimes pretentious social commentary.

We start off with a man trying to commit suicide and a girl witnessing that. Respectively, they are our two main characters here: Itoshiki/ Zetsubou Sensei and Kafuka. Gotta say, I haven't watched many shaft anime- only about 3....ish... to completion but I'm gonna say first episodes are their forte. This is definitely one of my most memorable first episodes and it's horribly funny; In both a literal and figurative sense. The two main characters are the other's foil, Sensei is THE most pessimistic man on the planet and Kafuka is a lovely little lady boundlessly full of optimism and naivety.

Starting out the jokes all revolve around his students' mental problems and unhealthy habits/ compulsions... oof. A girl with OCD, a girl with two personalities that kick in depending on what's pressuring her, a hikikomori, and several, several more. And it's all very, very funny. Occasionally there's gonna be a cultural or language-oriented joke you're not gonna get but overall it doesn't detract.

After we've introduced our cast of characters the joke setup is mainly: Sensei introduces something awful, or something which- you gotta quote it- makes him declare "I'm in DESPAIR!" or "Zetsuboushita!" about society, gives the students a tour of it all and Kafuka then retaliates with the opposite positive look on things, sometimes her wraparounds to twisting the situation in a positive way are seriously ridiculous. And that's part of what makes it hilarious.

But it does get a bit tediously formulaic on that towards the end, I'm not saying it stops being funny at any point. But you're just thinking sometimes, until they do the next really unique episode, that at times it's a bit exhausting even if you're laughing at it.

Beyond that, the art in the series is stunning and abstract without being abrasive or immersion-breaking. Shaft does a thing where they overlay patterns over the clothes that's super cool, the colors are gorgeous- it's a damn pretty show. And also every main opening is genuinely one of my favorite openings ever. They are amazing.

I wanna go further into the score because, what anyone who has read the ending would tell you, after reading the last 10 or so chapters to see the ending I think this series is a masterpiece or at the very least it HAS to impact the score in some way. ESPECIALLY in the anime production of it, Shaft puts in so much foreshadowing and is so careful about it. Watching the openings and everything after I finished it gave me goosebumps, even now. Made me wanna immediately rewatch it even if I had just finished it and was burnt out.

And don't be like, "well, if I gotta read the manga it's not so great" with me mister- it's TEN chapters, it takes a few minutes, and you just watched- like- FORTY EPISODES. And also, well you don't gotta read it... It's still a really good anime without knowing the ending....

Another thing I wanna mention is that this series, ironically, made me super positive after watching it. They're true, all the awful things Sensei says but when you see things from both sides it really makes you realize how trivial it is to obsess over the bad things. When there are good things staring right at you, someone who's willing to try so hard to change things and your perspective. People trying their best to live, love in the air in spring, busy days at school or work, the fun future you can't predict. Maybe Kafuka is right, things aren't so bad.

After all, she goes through so much just to make you see the good. Even after the worst things possible.

Straight off the bat, this anime is definitely worth watching. Read the synopsis, look at the cover image, your first impression and amount of interest in both is probably pretty close to what you'll get.

But if you're uncertain onwards we go--!

I have a silly rule when it comes to finding new shows to watch. If there is at least one person passionate enough to write a glowing "10" review my likelihood to watch it is like, 50x more than it would be otherwise. That was the case for this show.

And I'm giving it a "10" myself for that reason, because I ended up passionately falling ... in love with this anime. On a technical level, it probably falls more at a 7-8-ish. Mainly because of the presentation. The character designs are great, the writing is great, and the soundtrack is great. However, it is not animated in any impressive manner, the directing is pretty basic on a technical level, I have no idea what demographic this is aimed at, and the sound effects can be lacking. Which, given this is 2004, much of that makes sense; the early 2000s were a pretty tumultuous time for anime production- still transitioning to an all-digital format, tools for working as such being pretty limited, and people working with it likely being inexperienced. I'd imagine especially so for a long-standing institution like Nippon Animation. But really, there are some ugly moments.

I said at the start that this show is the sort that you'll probably be able to gauge whether you'll enjoy from the synopsis. A mystery with a long and historical past, classic-style design choices, your mature and likely very charming (indeed so) adolescent characters, with just that hint of sci-fi. And of course, everyone will want their taste of these traits in different amounts. For me, this show perfectly balances these traits.

I'm a history nerd- the historical aspect, while not super accurate, added a wonderful air of mystery and depth to the characters' pasts. The characters were fun and had immediate chemistry, it has that wonderful episode 1 moment where you just go "damn that was a charming-ass interaction I gotta see more of that shit" and you get to see some really cute and childish interactions even from the mature characters. It's refreshing. It's absolutely lovely. But I'm also a Tezuka cocksucker so sillyXmature is my bread and butter. Adding on: I don't like sci-fi much, this keeps it simple and blends some whimsical fantasy into the mix- it was never overbearing.

And the mystery itself is so well-woven! Admittedly, I'm easy to please but there was not a single moment where I was bored or didn't desperately want to find out what was next and what was behind it all. Well paced, giving you just the right amount of info to make your own inferences and throwing you some well done misleading hints. All wrapping up in an unvindictive, and satisfying ending. I mean there are some silly things throughout; like at one point a character says their "body was made smaller and smaller" and I guess we're just gonna ignore that this fella was shrunk somehow?? But most everything else was so well done that I was just like, "Okay show, you've answered my other questions I'll give you a pass this time." And I will also admit writing-wise that there are some hokey or pretentious moments, especially early on. I remember in like episode 2 or so Aghi, one of the children, narrates this one quote and it just sounds incredibly silly at that point.

The music is also really great, perfectly fits the emotions of the characters, and adding suspense when it needed to. The sad music is not just sad, there are many feelings in it just like our real emotions. Ueno Kouji, I hope you can be satisfied in knowing that you made a truly phenomenal soundtrack. The ending is also drop-dead gorgeous, the singer's voice is beautiful and the opening- although it took a while to grow on me- became something that I looked forward to understanding more of and listening to as the story went on.

Just a fun additional thing, since this is Nippon animation I assumed it would probably be similar to their World Masterpiece Theater shows. Aimed at a family or younger audience with some intense stuff for the sensitive people but nothing too heavy. Yeah, I wouldn't say that now... If I would have watched this as a kid there are a lot of moments I am confident would have traumatized me. Just- some really unexpectedly violent imagery and very terrifying unforgettable situations for some characters. That may be one of later NA's banes, confused target demographics. I think this was probably a passion project of Nakamura Takashi more than anything, and as that I think he should be proud to call this his masterpiece.

This was my first review, it was probably a bit pretentious but I sincerely loved this anime and it has become one of my all-time favorites despite its flaws. I hope other people will watch and love this anime too. If it sounds interesting to you don't hesitate to watch it!
