Naoki Urasawa. One of the greatest exponents of manga authors, without any doubt. A master of suspense and mystery stories (and I'm greatly simplifying what his stories are with that sentence). "Who am I to judge his work?". Honestly that's the only thing going through my head as I write this. But well, I just finished "Monster", I feel like writing a bit and, why not, this is a country with freedom of speech (for the moment, at least). So here I go, I won't go on too long either.

"Monster" has many strong points, not for nothing is it one of ... the best rated anime adaptations ever. The plot is a real genius, let's start from there. With a solid story, it is a journey in which little by little we fill in a puzzle in which each piece ends up fitting together even though sometimes it may not even seem like it. And there are many pieces, I assure you. The handling of the intrigue and of the coups d'effect is almost perfect. I'm sure I'm missing fingers on my hands to count the number of times the plot has thrown a punch in my face and left me completely knocked out. One of the greatest things about it is that all these incredible revelations and plot twists don't feel forced at any point. On the contrary, they are realistic (within what is fiction) and fit together in a completely natural way. In "Monster" there are cliffhangers that should be punishable by law, because it is impossible not to put the next chapter after one of them. I can't forget either the exquisite historical base, with countries, regions, police forces and many other elements that are completely true. And of course I can not fail to mention, because it is perhaps one of its most key points, the great philosophical load that the plot has. It is impossible for the viewer not to get involved in a multitude of moral debates during the course of the chapters. It is not only about watching, but "Monster" invites you to reflect and position yourself, so to speak.

"Monster" is an anime with a peculiar development. It has a long aftertaste, it flows slowly, without haste but without pause. It is constantly opening new avenues, bringing secondary plots (or they seem to be), introducing new characters... but treating all this with the importance it deserves, because basically EVERYTHING ends up influencing, more directly or more indirectly, the main story. Nothing is a coincidence. Well it is true that this structure may not please everyone, because this slow development (almost always, sometimes it is not) is coupled with a rather high length. 74 chapters are quite a lot of chapters. It is long, it is a reality, which is not a bad thing. For me at least. I understand that today's kids, those who have the word "filler" constantly in their mouths, those who make lists to skip chapters and watch only "what matters", don't watch "Monster" with the same eyes as I do. They are wrong, just the same. "Monster" is long. Yes. In "Monster" there are many chapters. There are a lot of chapters in "Monster. But there is absolutely no "filler" whichever way you look at it. Everything counts, everything gives background, everything enriches. Sometimes you have to look beyond the purely superficial. Just as I say this, I also say that due to the sheer volume of characters, plots and nooks and crannies, it is sometimes impossible to get a little lost in the plot. No matter how well structured it is, which it is, this does happen at times. It doesn't last long, but it's there.

Another key to "Monster" is clearly the cast of characters. Many of them unforgettable. All different from each other (except Johan and Nina physically, ba dum tss), all with their distinct personalities, all with their place and their role, however small, in the plot. Not only Dr. Tenma lives "Monster", especially in the final stretch, and that is a success. In fact, we can spend several chapters without knowing anything about him and the quality of the story does not suffer. Good, bad, of "changing morals" (I'm looking at you, Eva), in general the characters are solid and masterfully constructed. To name any of them would be oversimplifying, but I have to admit that my absolute weakness is Anna/Nina. And Johan is a magnificent villain, by the way.

Finally, let's finish with the technical section. Artistically, perhaps it stands out a little less, and with this I'm not saying it's bad. Not at all. It has a clean style, very characteristic, of nineties airs. The character design is very good, because despite its realistic nature, it does not become repetitive, which is something that usually happens in these cases. To highlight the enormous expressiveness that Urasawa (because this is something of his, of his drawing style) transmits to the characters. Brilliant in that sense. In terms of music, I think it has a very good BSO, recognizable and quality melodies that fit perfectly with the scenes. A single opening for 74 chapters (impossible not to relate it to "Monster" already) and two curious endings. None of them exceptional, but they work well.

Naoki Urasawa. Uno de los mayores exponentes de los autores de manga, sin ninguna duda. Un maestro de las historias de suspense y misterio (y estoy simplificando mucho lo que son sus historias con esa frase). "¿Quién soy yo para juzgar su obra?". Sinceramente es lo único que me pasa por la cabeza mientras escribo esto. Pero bueno, acabo de terminar "Monster", me apetece escribir un poco y, por qué no, este es un país con libertad de expresión (de momento, al menos). Así que allá voy, tampoco me extenderé mucho.

"Monster" tiene muchos puntos fuertes, no en vano es una de las adaptaciones al anime mejor valoradas de siempre. La trama es una auténtica genialidad, partamos de ahí. Con una historia sólida, es un viaje en el que poco a poco vamos rellenando un puzzle en el que cada pieza termina encajando a pesar de que incluso a veces pueda parecer que no. Y hay muchas piezas, os lo aseguro. El manejo de la intriga y de los golpes de efecto es casi perfecto. Estoy seguro de que me faltan dedos en las manos para contar el número de veces que el argumento me ha lanzado un puñetazo en la cara y me ha dejado totalmente noqueado. Una de las cosas más importantes de esto es que todos estas revelaciones increíbles y giros de guion no se sienten forzadas en ningún momento. Al contrario, son realistas (dentro de lo que es la ficción) y encajan de forma completamente natural. En "Monster" hay "cliffhangers" que deberían estar penados por ley, porque es imposible no poner el siguiente capítulo después de alguno de ellos. No se me olvida tampoco la exquisita base histórica, con países, regiones, cuerpos policiales y otros muchos elementos que son completamente ciertos. Y por supuesto tampoco puedo dejar de mencionar, porque quizá sea uno de sus puntos más clave, la grandísima carga filósofica que la trama tiene. Es imposible que el espectador no se vea enfrascado en multitud de debates morales durante el devenir de los capítulos. No solo se trata de ver, sino que "Monster" te invita a reflexionar y posicionarte, por decirlo de alguna forma.

"Monster" es un anime con un desarrollo peculiar. Es de poso largo, va fluyendo lentamente, sin prisa pero sin pausa. Constantemente está abriendo nuevas vías, trayendo tramas secundarias (o lo parecen), presentando personajes nuevos... pero tratando todo esto con la importancia que merece, porque básicamente TODO termina influyendo, más directa o más indirectamente, en la historia principal. Nada es casualidad. Bien es cierto que puede que esta estructura no guste a todo el mundo, porque este desarrollo lento (casi siempre, a veces no es así) se une a una longitud bastante elevada. 74 capítulos son bastantes capítulos. Es larga, es una realidad, lo cual no es malo. Para mí al menos. Entiendo que los chavales de hoy en día, esos que tienen la palabra "relleno" constantemente en la boca, esos que hacen listas para saltarse capítulos y ver solo "lo que importa", no vean "Monster" con los mismos ojos que yo. Se equivocan, igualmente. "Monster" es larga. Sí. En "Monster" hay muchos capítulos. También. Pero no hay absolutamente nada de "relleno" se mire por donde se mire. Todo cuenta, todo da trasfondo, todo enriquece. A veces hay que ver más allá de lo puramente superficial. Igual que digo esto, también digo que debido al gran volumen de personajes, tramas y recovecos, a veces es imposible perderse un poco en la trama. Por muy bien estructurada que esté, que lo está, esto ocurre en ocasiones. No dura mucho esa sensación, pero está ahí.

Otra de las claves de "Monster" es clarísimamente el plantel de personajes. Muchos de ellos inolvidables. Todos diferentes entre sí (menos Johan y Nina en lo físico, ba dum tss), todos son sus personalidades marcadas, todos con su hueco y su papel, por pequeño que sea, en la trama. No solo del doctor Tenma vive "Monster", especialmente en el tramo final, y eso es un acierto. De hecho, podemos pasar varios capítulos sin saber nada de él y la calidad de la historia no se resiente. Buenos, malos, de "moral cambiante" (te miro a ti, Eva), en general los personajes son solídisimos y están construidos de forma magistral. Nombrar a alguno sería simplificar demasiado, pero he de reconocer que mi debilidad absoluta es Anna/Nina. Y Johan es un villano magnífico, por cierto.

Finalizando con el apartado técnico. En lo artístico quizá destaque algo menos, y con esto no digo que sea malo. Para nada. Tiene un estilo limpio, muy característico, de aires noventeros. El diseño de personajes es muy bueno, ya que pese a su naturaleza realista, no se hace repetitivo, que es algo que suele ocurrir en estos casos. A destacar la enorme expresividad que Urasawa (porque esto es algo suyo, de su estilo de dibujado) transmite a los personajes. Brillante en ese sentido. En lo musical creo que tiene una BSO a muy buen nivel, melodías reconocibles y de calidad, que encajan perfectamente con las escenas. Un solo opening para 74 capítulos (imposible no relacionarlo con "Monster" ya) y dos endings curiosos. Ninguno excepcional, pero cumplen bien.

"Darker than Black" is an anime of a very remarkable level, no doubt one of those that are worth seeing. And although my first contact was more like a handicap, being sincere. The first minutes start in a frenetic way, pure action. Maybe a priori this doesn't sound bad at all, okay... but if you add a huge amount of strange names, unknown data and constant doubts, more than getting the effect of trapping the viewer, what happens is that you disconnect from the story due to excessive confusion. That's what happened to me, at least. Luckily, that feeling was rather ... short-lived and dissipated as the episodes went by.

It's not that the viewer suddenly goes from having no idea what's going on on the screen to knowing all the facts of the plot. Not at all. It is precisely these details that are known very, very slowly in each of the episodes. What changes then? Well, to begin with, the way in which this plot is presented. And the structure they choose for it. For me, one of the strong points of "Darker than Black" is that it is organized in such a way that it becomes almost a procedural series, without being completely so. In groups of two episodes they present us stories that normally have a beginning and an end during the time that the couple of episodes last. And at the same time that these self-concluding stories finish and end, in the background they show us data, clarifying details, clearing up doubts, connecting facts and characters... of the main plot, of the protagonists, of the world and its functioning. This way until we reach the final stretch, where the central narrative axis of "Darker than Black" goes from the "background" to the front page and takes all the protagonism, as it is logical. In my opinion, this structure is a great success. First of all, it offers versatility, since it can be moved between genres very easily and/or change the tone, thanks to the fact that every two episodes we have a "new" story that is blank in that sense: drama, comedy, action... there is time for everything. Also because these stories are perfectly integrated and connected with the main plot, little by little we get to know the details of the world and the characters, which is appreciated so as not to get bewildered (which happened to me in the first scenes). I can't really think of a more efficient structure for "Darker than Black", it fits like a glove.

The cast of characters is also a plus. It's true that they may not be the most charismatic characters in the history of anime (due also to their... "nature"), but in the end you get attached to practically all of them, and that's not usually something easy to achieve. I could name many of them, like Hei, Yin, even Mao, November 11 or Amber, each one with their personalities, well differentiated from each other. There are a very large number of secondary characters due to the "short story" structure, and yet, even appearing in just one, two episodes, there are so many characters worth remembering. But I personally choose Misaki Kirihara, without a doubt my favorite, because of her design, personality and evolution. Talking about design, precisely his great quality in that sense helps a lot to make the character section so good. An outstanding as for character design, because it is not easy to have such an extensive and varied cast as for designs in a visually realistic anime like this "Darker than Black". It is really incredible the great diversity in the physical aspect of the characters and the little redundancy in their traits.

I'm already getting into the technical sections, another aspect that is quite good. As I said, the character design is great. Artistically you may like it more or less, but I think it is undeniable that the level of drawing and animation is high. Above average without any doubt. And to me personally in realistic and urban style it seems to be one of the best I've seen. The sound section, although it stands out a little less, also borders on good level. Especially with regard to the ambient OST, the melodies themselves. The two openings and the two endings do not excite me too much, though. Perhaps the second ending is the most remarkable in this sense.

"Darker than Black" me parece un anime de un nivel muy notable, sin duda de esos que merece la pena molestarse en ver. Y eso que mi primer contacto fue más bien tirando a deficiente, siendo sincero. Los primeros minutos arrancan de forma frenética, pura acción. Quizá a priori esto no suene mal del todo, de acuerdo... pero si le unes una enorme cantidad de nombres extraños, datos desconocidos y dudas constantes, más que conseguir el efecto de atrapar al espectador, lo que ocurre es que lo vas desconectando de la historia debido a una confusión excesiva. Eso fue lo que me ocurrió a mí al menos. Por suerte, esa sensación duró más bien poco y se fue disipando con el paso de los capítulos.

No es que de pronto el espectador pase de no tener ni idea de lo que ocurre en pantalla a conocer al dedillo todos los datos de la trama. Para nada. Precisamente esos detalles se van conociendo muy, muy a cuentagotas en cada uno de los capítulos. ¿Qué cambia entonces? Pues para empezar la forma en que se presenta esta trama. Y la estructura que escogen para ello. Para mí uno de los puntos fuertes de "Darker than Black" es que está organizado de forma que se convierte casi en una serie procedimental, sin llegar a serlo del todo. En grupos de dos capítulos se nos van presentando historias que normalmente tienen principio y final durante el tiempo que dura esa pareja de capítulos. Y a la vez que estas historias autoconclusivas acaban y terminan, de fondo se nos van mostrando datos, aclarando detalles, despejando dudas, conectando hechos y personajes... de la trama principal, de los protagonistas, del mundo y de su funcionamiento. Así hasta llegar a la recta final, donde ya el eje narrativo central de "Darker than Black" pasa del "background" a la primera plana y toma todo el protagonismo, como es lógico. Todo un acierto esta estructura, en mi opinión. Primeramente ofrece versatilidad, ya que se puede mover entre géneros con mucha facilidad y/o cambiar el tono, gracias a que cada dos capítulos tenemos una historia "nueva" que está en blanco en ese sentido: drama, comedia, acción... hay momento para todo. También debido a que estas historias están perfectamente integradas y conectadas con la trama principal, poco a poco vamos conociendo los detalles del mundo y los personajes, lo cual se agradece para no empacharnos de desconcierto (lo que me ocurrió en las primeras escenas). Realmente no se me ocurre una estructura más eficiente para "Darker than Black", encaja como un guante.

El plantel de personajes también es un punto a favor. Bien es cierto que quizá no sean los más carismáticos de la historia del anime (debido también a su... "naturaleza"), pero al final se les coge cariño a prácticamente todos, y eso no suele ser algo fácil de conseguir. Podría nombrar a muchos de ellos, como Hei, Yin, incluso Mao, November 11 o Amber, cada uno con sus personalidades, bien diferenciados entre sí. Hay una cantidad muy grande de secundarios debido a la estructura de "historias cortas", y aun así, incluso apareciendo en apenas uno, dos capítulos, hay muchísimos personajes dignos de ser recordados. Pero yo personalmente me quedo con Misaki Kirihara, sin duda mi favorita, por diseño, personalidad y evolución. Hablando de diseño, precisamente su gran calidad en ese sentido ayuda muchísimo a que el apartado de personajes sea tan bueno. Un sobresaliente en cuanto a diseño de personajes, porque no es fácil tener un plantel tan extenso y a la vez variado en cuanto a diseños en un anime visualmente realista como es este "Darker than Black". Realmente es increíble la gran diversidad en el aspecto físico de los personajes y la poca redundancia en sus rasgos.

Me meto ya de lleno en los apartados técnicos, otro aspecto bastante bueno. Como ya he comentado, el diseño de personajes es genial. Artísticamente podrá gustar más o menos, pero creo que es innegable que el nivel de dibujado y animación es alto. Por encima de la media sin ninguna duda. Y a mí personalmente en estilo realista y urbano me parece de lo mejorcito que he visto. El apartado sonoro, aunque destaca algo menos, también raya a buen nivel. Especialmente en lo que se refiere a la BSO ambiental, las melodías en sí. Los dos openings y los dos endings no me entusiasman demasiado, eso sí. Quizá siendo el segundo ending lo más destacado en este sentido.

I'll be quick and direct with "Yakitate!! Japan." As this anime is, actually. Yeah, it's a story about bakers making bread, sounds crazy, right? Well, it works. It works within what it is, of course. I'm explaining, "Yakitate!! Japan" is an unpretentious play, that's for sure. Its main asset is very clear, it focuses on comedy with a theme so different and so unusual that it even seems hilarious in itself. It has limitations by its nature, but there is evidence of this and it manages to border on them with mastery almost always. It's fun and at the same time ... didactic, which is always a good mix. It has an almost perfect balance between absurd humor (the most typical Japanese humor in this case) and intelligent humor based on word games and metaphors.

It's original to the point of saying enough is enough to avoid falling into a boredom that seems almost assured due to its subject matter (let's be honest: a story about people competing to see who makes the best bread doesn't have much space). I could really dedicate a whole paragraph of this review to commenting on small details that have caught my attention and that give "Yakitate!! Japan" with a special personality and a very distinctive nature. I will, in fact. I warn that from here on, and until the line break, there may be slight spoilers (never directly from the plot, though). Here I go. In each of the 69 episodes, they spend a few seconds in the end (after the next episode advance and the ending) to explain some real life curiosity related to the plot, usually about bread itself or about Japanese traditions. They call it "seed of knowledge". There are several occasions when the fourth wall is broken in a brilliantly integrated way. I remember a couple of times when the legality of mentioning characters from other anime or real companies is questioned. On another occasion one of the characters wonders how it is possible that in one scene they are in one city and in the next they suddenly find themselves in a different one. Then they tell him about "the magic of editing" and that this is done because "nobody is interested in travel sequences on public transport". Brilliant. There are constant mentions of characters and situations from others animes, even having some sequence in the plot as a tribute or parody (or even both). Without thinking much I remember moments about "Detective Conan", "One Piece", "Dragon Ball" or "Wild Life". There are also many references to brands, personalities and places in Japanese culture. Even some, although less, focused more on the western, such as a curious reference to the great Freddie Mercury. There are episodes with a structure or a theme that offer enormous variety and freshness. I can think, for example, of a plot that includes time travel with butterfly effects that change the present (this one in particular is brutal), an alternative version of the anime in which bread is no longer the main character but rice, a chapter with sequences dedicated to art (with a graphic aspect included) of painters like Monet or Picasso, or a spectacular parody of "The Lord of the Rings". The imagination and originality of the authors/scriptwriters becomes very, very surprising.

Of course, not everything is so good in "Yakitate!! Japan". It's long, very long. That wouldn't become a problem if it wasn't for this fact that it ends up falling into the great ballast of this type of proposal: in the long run it becomes a jumble of "fights" without any kind of link or background between them, which makes the interest to go down little by little. This is especially noticeable in the final section, which I would dare to say is completely unnecessary if it were not for specific details full of geniality (such as some of those mentioned in the previous paragraph). Most of the characters are nice and very different from each other, with very marked personalities. But to tell the truth they are still a set of clichés, although it is not a big problem in a white comedy like this. What is worse is that throughout 69 episodes there is no development or progress in any of them. All of them remain impassive since their first appearances and they surprise little in that sense. The artistic section is correct. With an "old" aspect, more throwing to 90s than to the current standard, something that is neither good nor bad, it is simply like that. It's not out of tune, but it's not a wonder either. Not that much more is needed, by the way. The musical section does seem more remarkable to me. It has cheerful and curious melodies that become easily recognizable and match the tone perfectly. It's not the best OST ever, but it's more than acceptable.

Voy a ser rápido y directo con "Yakitate!! Japan". Tal y como es este anime en realidad. Sí, es una historia sobre panaderos haciendo pan, ¿suena a locura, verdad? Pues funciona. Funciona dentro de lo que es, por supuesto. Me explico: "Yakitate!! Japan" es una obra sin muchas pretensiones, eso está claro. Su baza principal está muy clara, se centra en la comedia con una temática tan diferente y tan poco común que llega a parecer hilarante de por sí. Tiene limitaciones por su naturaleza, pero hay constancia de ello y se consigue bordearlas con maestría casi siempre. Es divertida y a la vez didáctica, algo que siempre es una buena mezcla. Tiene un equilibrio casi perfecto entre humor absurdo (el más típico japonés en este caso) y un humor inteligente basado en juegos de palabras y metáforas.

Es original hasta decir basta a la hora de reinventarse para no caer en un hastío que parece casi asegurado debido a su temática (seamos sinceros: una historia sobre gente compitiendo para ver quién hace el mejor pan no tiene mucho margen de maniobra). Realmente podría dedicar un párrafo entero de esta review a comentar pequeños detalles que me han llamado la atención y que dotan a "Yakitate!! Japan" de una personalidad especial y un carácter muy distintivo. Lo voy a hacer, de hecho. Advierto de que a partir de aquí, y hasta el salto de línea, puede haber ligeros spoilers (nunca directamente de la trama, eso sí). Allá voy. En cada uno de los 69 capítulos dedican unos segundos en el final (después del avance del siguiente capítulo y el ending) a explicar alguna curiosidad de la vida real relacionada con la trama, normalmente sobre pan en sí o sobre tradiciones japonesas. Lo llaman "semilla de conocimiento". Hay varias ocasiones en la que se rompe la cuarta pared de una forma genialmente integrada. Recuerdo un par de veces en las que se cuestiona la legalidad de que se mencionen personajes de otros anime o empresas reales. En otra ocasión uno de los personajes se pregunta cómo es posible que en una escena estén en una ciudad y en la siguiente se encuentren de pronto en otra diferente. Entonces le comentan sobre "la magia de la edición" y que eso se hace porque "a nadie le interesan las secuencias de viajes en transporte público". Brillante. Hay constantes menciones a personajes y situaciones de otros anime, llegando incluso a tener alguna secuencia en la trama a modo de homenaje o parodia (o incluso ambas). Sin pensar mucho recuerdo momentos sobre "Detective Conan", "One Piece", "Dragon Ball" o "Wild Life". También hay multitud de referencias a marcas, personalidades y lugares de la cultura japonesa. Incluso algunas, aunque menos, centradas más en lo occidental, como por ejemplo una curiosa referencia al gran Freddie Mercury. Hay capítulos con una estructura o una temática que ofrecen una variedad y una frescura enorme. Se me ocurre, por ejemplo, una trama que incluye viajes en el tiempo con efectos mariposa que cambian el presente (este concretamente es brutal), una versión alternativa del anime en la que el pan deja de ser el protagonista para dar paso a que lo sea el arroz, un capítulo con secuencias dedicadas al arte (con aspecto gráfico incluido) de pintores como Monet o Picasso o una espectacular parodia de "El señor de los anillos". La imaginación y la originalidad de los autores/guionistas llegan a ser muy, muy sorprendentes.

Por supuesto, no todo es tan bueno en "Yakitate!! Japan". Es larga, muy larga. Eso no se convertiría en un problema de no ser porque debido a esto termina cayendo en el gran lastre de este tipo de propuestas: a la larga se convierte en un batiburrillo de "combates" sin ningún tipo de nexo ni trasfondo entre ellos, lo que hace que el interés vaya decayendo poco a poco. Esto se nota especialmente en el tramo final, que me atrevería a decir que sobra completamente si no fuera por detalles concretos repletos de genialidad (como alguno de los comentados en el párrafo anterior). La mayoría de personajes son simpáticos y muy diferentes entre sí, con personalidades muy marcadas. Pero a decir verdad no dejan de ser un conjunto de clichés, aunque tampoco sea un gran problema en una comedia blanca como esta. Lo que sí es peor es que a lo largo de 69 capítulos no haya ningún tipo de desarrollo ni avance de ninguno de ellos. Todos se mantienen impasibles desde sus primeras apariciones y sorprenden poco en ese sentido. El apartado artístico es correcto. Con un aspecto "antiguo", más tirando a noventero que al estándar actual, algo que no es ni bueno ni malo, simplemente es así. No desentona, pero tampoco es una maravilla. No es que se necesite mucho más, dicho sea de paso. El apartado musical sí me parece más destacable. Tiene melodías alegres y curiosas que se convierten en fácilmente reconocibles y concuerdan perfectamente con el tono. No es la mejor OST de la historia, pero sí tiene un nivel más que aceptable.

I'm not going to do that because I think this second season of "Ansatsu Kyoushitsu" has pretty much the same strengths and weaknesses as the first round of episodes. One of those examples of anime that shouldn't be separated into different parts because it doesn't make any sense. Obviously, there are some differences, which is what I'm going to try to focus on. If you are interested in a more detailed opinion about "Ansatsu" I invite you to read my review of the first season.

This second season is less fun in general. ... It has less "slice of life" moments in a relaxed and carefree tone. Honestly, this was/is one of the strengths of "Ansatsu", so it's a pity. When it concerns small stories in one (or even half) episode, the series shines much more as a comedy than when it tries to take itself too seriously. Luckily, this has been compensated for by shaping it and finally finishing the main plot. The flashbacks about Koro-Sensei's past, the surprise about Kayano, the final episode (and the brilliant epilogue)... in broad terms the whole final stretch is a real wonder. And just for that, it's worth watching "Ansatsu", although it's true that the way to this ending would have been much more enjoyable with more fun and less forced personal dramas. More like the first season, well, it's not strange or impossible either.

As for the characters, for me the other weak point of "Ansatsu", nothing has changed too much. In the first season, the concept of class 3E as a whole was great, but individually they lost a lot. They have tried to fix this in the second season, even though Koro-Sensei has lost a lot of prominence (he's still great, like Karasuma and Irina), and it has worked out for them only halfway. Although it's true that characters like Nagisa, Kayano or Karma have improved and evolved correctly, most students are still filling in and contributing between zero and nothing. It's no coincidence that the students of class 3E who have made a leap in quality have been the most prominent, with a few honourable exceptions like Nakamura. That's something, I guess. The best example of this can be seen in the end, when all the members of class 3E are reviewed one by one. At that time, I found out that there were 28 students. Excessive by any measure. Some I didn't know the name of, others I didn't even remember. There were more than half of them. Everything would have been much better with a class of 10-12 kids. More efficient character development would have been possible and a much greater identification and empathy of the viewer with them would have been created. A pity, because among other things that ending I name would have been (even more) shocking to say enough.

As far as the artistic section is concerned, the very high level is also maintained. Visually, it's a fucking great thing, both in the art itself and in visual effects. The drawing style works really well and is a delight on screen. The soundtrack, as it was in the first season, is a genius, with several memorable themes, the kind you don't forget. There are even some more of equally good (or even better) quality, like "Tokiakasa Reru Nazo", which I would define as mixing the OST of "Metroid", "Kiseijuu" and "Mushishi" in a blender.

Oh, and I didn't want to leave out the many references to Japanese culture in general. Paying homage to Nintendo or One Piece in your own way always adds up.

No voy a extenderme demasiado con esta review. No lo voy a hacer porque considero que esta segunda temporada de "Ansatsu Kyoushitsu" tiene prácticamente las mismas virtudes y defectos que la primera tanda de episodios. Uno de esos ejemplos de animes que no se deberían separar en diferentes fichas porque no tiene ningún sentido. Obviamente sí hay algún que otro matiz diferencial, que es en lo que voy a intentar centrarme. Si te interesa una opinión más detallada al respecto de "Ansatsu" te invito a leer la review que hice de la primera temporada.

Esta segunda temporada es menos divertida en general. Tiene menos momentos de "slice of life" en tono relajado y desenfadado. Sinceramente este era/es uno de los puntos fuertes de "Ansatsu", así que es una pena. Cuando se trata de pequeñas historias de un solo capítulo (o incluso medio) la serie brilla mucho más como comedia que cuando intenta tomarse demasiado en serio a sí misma. Por suerte, esto se ha compensado dándole forma y finalizando, por fin, la trama principal. Los flashbacks sobre el pasado de Koro-Sensei, la sorpresa sobre Kayano, el capítulo final (y el genial epílogo)... a grandes rasgos todo el tramo final es una auténtica maravilla. Y solo por ello merece la pena ver "Ansatsu", si bien es cierto que el camino hasta este desenlace se habría hecho mucho más ameno con más diversión y menos dramitas personales forzados. Más como en la primera temporada, vaya, tampoco es nada extraño ni imposible.

En cuanto a los personajes, para mí el otro punto flaco de "Ansatsu", nada ha cambiado en exceso. En la primera temporada el concepto de la clase 3E como ente conjunto era buenísimo, pero individualmente perdían mucho. Han intentado arreglar esto en la segunda temporada, a costa incluso de que Koro-Sensei haya perdido muchísimo protagonismo (él sigue siendo genial, como Karasuma e Irina), y les ha funcionado a medias. Aunque es cierto que personajes como Nagisa, Kayano o Karma han mejorado y evolucionado de forma correcta, la mayoría de alumnos siguen estando de relleno y aportan entre cero y nada. No es casualidad que los alumnos de la clase 3E que han dado un salto de calidad hayan sido los más protagonistas, con alguna honrosa excepción como Nakamura. Algo es algo, supongo. El mejor ejemplo de esto se ve en el final, cuando se repasa uno por uno a todos los integrantes de la clase 3E. En ese momento me enteré de que había 28 alumnos. Excesivo se mire por donde se mire. De algunos no me sabía el nombre, de otros directamente ni me acordaba. Sobran más de la mitad. Todo habría sido mucho mejor con una clase de 10-12 chavales. Habría sido posible un desarrollo de personajes más eficiente y se habría creado una identificación y una empatía del espectador mucho mayor con ellos. Una pena, porque entre otras cosas ese final que nombro habría sido (aún más) impactante hasta decir basta.

En lo que respecta al apartado artístico, el altísimo nivel también se mantiene. Visualmente es una jodida pasada, tanto en el arte en sí como en efectos visuales. El estilo de dibujado funciona realmente bien y es una delicia en pantalla. La banda sonora, como ya ocurría en la primera temporada, es una genialidad, con varios temas memorables, de esos que no se olvidan. Incluso se añade alguno más de una calidad igual de buena (o incluso mayor), como "Tokiakasa Reru Nazo", que yo definiría como si hubieran mezclado en una batidora la BSO de "Metroid", "Kiseijuu" y "Mushishi".

Ah, y no quería dejar de nombrar la cantidad de referencias a la cultura japonesa en general. Realizar, a su manera, homenajes a Nintendo o One Piece siempre suma.

There are animes which I need a greater effort than usual to write about them. It has nothing to do with the fact that they didn't look like a masterpiece to me, because I also enjoy skinning the ones that seem to me to be real rubbish. Let's say that the more extreme my impression of an anime is, the more fluent the words come to me when I write. "BTOOOM!" has no place there. "BTOOOM!" is part of that group of animes (fortunately small in comparison to the total) that hardly generate positive feelings, but it is not that ... they have anything negative remarkable in itself. Neither their story, nor their characters, nor their technical section tell me anything special. Neither for good nor for bad. *Insert here other similar Spanish expressions without possible translation*.

The main plot is a bit trite at this point. It is in 2019, of course, but it was also there at the end of 2012 when "BTOOOM!" was released. People trapped in an enclosed space who are forced to kill each other in order to survive. The pinnacle of innovation is not that it is, eh? That this is added to the sub-thematic "virtual games that become "real life" of the protagonists", which is the other trite theme par excellence of the anime, does not help anything to that constant feeling of "I have seen this a thousand times before". Anyway, lack of absolute originality apart, the development of the story is not at all bad, within what the initial encortage allows. It is nothing of the other world, but at least it fulfills the role of easy entertainment. But the story doesn't end and it doesn't look like it's never going to end, which makes the already warm impressions a little worse.

It's the same with the characters. It has a relatively interesting squad, full of clichés, but varied. It does, of course, develop very little and give almost no importance to the secondary, focusing excessively on some protagonists who are probably the weakest of the whole. Their love story comes close to ridiculous at times.

The visual section fulfills its role without any kind of boasting. It has good artistic design, without frills. I'm going to avoid the obsession with the physics of female breasts that the author/director/animator seems to have had. Technically more of the same. Good effects, drawings, scenarios... There aren't even any of those awful 3D models that the Japanese have to put in from time to time. Ambient music, though generic, sounds good. The first opening is very decent (there's a second only for the last episode, unfortunately) and the ending doesn't bother.

Little more can I say about "BTOOOM!". If you are attracted to a minimum, the premise will distract you, but it doesn't have much more. It's one of those animes that after a short time you don't remember anything about their story or their characters. But you can see it, at least, that today is more than can be said of others... and some with much fame.

Hay animes de los que necesito un esfuerzo mayor que de costumbre para ponerme a escribir sobre ellos. No tiene nada que ver con que no me hayan parecido una obra maestra, porque disfruto igualmente despellejando los que me han parecido auténticos bodrios. Digamos que cuanto más al extremo esté mi impresión sobre un anime, más fluidas me brotan las palabras al escribir. "BTOOOM!" no tiene cabida ahí. "BTOOOM!" forma parte de ese grupillo de animes (por suerte es pequeño en comparación al total) que me generan muy pocas sensaciones positivas, pero que tampoco es que tengan nada negativo destacable en sí. Ni su historia, ni sus personajes, ni su apartado técnico me dicen nada especial. Ni para bien ni para mal. Ni fú ni fá. Ni frío ni calor. Ni chicha ni limoná.

La trama principal hay que reconocer que está un poco trillada a estas alturas. Lo está en 2019, por supuesto, pero también lo estaba ya a finales de 2012 cuando se estrenó "BTOOOM!". Gente atrapada en un espacio cerrado que se ve obligada a matarse entre sí para sobrevivir. El culmen de la innovación no es que sea, ¿eh? Que a esto se le sume la subtemática "juegos virtuales que pasan a ser "vida real" de los protagonistas", que es el otro tema trillado por excelencia del anime, tampoco ayuda nada a esa constante sensación de "he visto esto ya mil veces antes". De todas formas, falta de originalidad absoluta aparte, lo que es el desarrollo de la historia no está del todo mal, dentro de lo que el encorsetamiento inicial permite. No es nada del otro mundo, pero al menos cumple con el papel de entretenimiento fácil. Eso sí, la historia no acaba ni tiene pinta de que vaya a acabar nunca, lo que empeora un poco más las ya tibias impresiones.

Con los personajes pasa un poco lo mismo. Tiene un plantel relativamente interesante, lleno de clichés, pero variado. Peca, eso sí, de desarrollar muy poco y darle casi nula importancia a los secundarios, centrándose excesivamente en unos protagonistas que probablemente sean lo más flojo de todo el conjunto. Su historia de amor roza el ridículo por momentos.

El apartado visual cumple con su papel sin ningún tipo de alarde. Tiene buen diseño artístico, sin florituras. Voy a obviar la obsesión con la física de los pechos femeninos que parece tenía el autor/director/animador. Técnicamente más de lo mismo. Buenos efectos, dibujados, escenarios... Ni siquiera hay alguno de esos modelados 3D tan horrorosos que a los japoneses les da por meter de vez en cuando. La música ambiental, aunque algo genérica, suena bien. El primer opening es muy decente (hay un segundo solo para el último capítulo, por desgracia) y el ending no molesta.

Poco más puedo decir sobre "BTOOOM!". Si te atrae un mínimo la premisa te distraerá, pero no tiene mucho más. Es de esos animes que al poco tiempo ya no recuerdas nada sobre su historia o sus personajes. Pero se deja ver, al menos, que hoy en día es más de lo que se puede decir de otros... y algunos con mucha fama.

I like stories with an unconventional narrative structure, montage and/or rhythm. Seriously, I think they give the whole set an aura of mystery and confusion that ends up adding an extra plus to the sensations of the viewer. But for something like this works, it has to be well done, and that's not easy either. You have to spin very fine for this type of bet to go well. In the world of anime, "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" comes to mind as a good example.

But let's go with "Baccano"... I don't think anyone will miss that one of his (theorist) ... attractive is this I'm saying. I would dare to say that in "Baccano" everything is based on its atypical narrative structure working and its mix of plots getting hooked. Let me be clear: it doesn't work. I wouldn't know exactly why. Perhaps the changes between the different timelines and the different plots are too abrupt, too frequent or too short. Probably all at once. In this type of story, even if at first confusion reigns in the viewer, everything must feel like a huge puzzle in which the pieces fit together little by little. In "Baccano" it's as if to assemble the puzzle the pieces are thrown to your face while your hands are tied. At no time is it possible to connect with the different points of view of the plot, whether past, present or future, due to the narrative tempo. This means that after a short time the disinterest is growing, even that there are parts that you are directly wanting to end (in my case was the whole part of the mafia) because from almost the very first moment it was impossible to connect. This structure and its rhythm is a complete horror, the real tomb of "Baccano".

As I said before, the problem is that what should be the strong point doesn't work, so the whole inevitably becomes water. History is not powerful enough to compensate for anything. It's really quite simple, no matter how many absurd turns you want to make and how many unnecessary dates you want to fill in. There is not much to tell. The characters don't get a better overall impression either. And look that there is such a large number of them that it overwhelms, not even for those... Joining history and characters, my favorite moments of "Baccano" are those that had Isaac and Miria as protagonists, and that are basically characters of "comic relief". That's the way it was.

As for the technical sections... Artistically, he hasn't managed to convince me either. I haven't connected with his ninety style (in terms of drawing, not ambience), although at least the certain variety of the characters' appearance is appreciated, given the large number of them. The sound section is perhaps the highlight of the anime, with jazz melodies of a cheerful tone very much in keeping with its setting. Nothing of the other world either, let's not get confused, but among so many failed sections, the little decent attracts more attention.

Me suelen gustar mucho las historias con una estructura narrativa, un montaje y/o un ritmo poco convencionales. En serio, creo que dotan al conjunto de un aura de misterio y confusión que termina aportando un plus extra a las sensaciones del espectador. Eso sí, para que algo así funcione tiene que estar bien realizado y eso tampoco es fácil. Hay que hilar muy fino para que este tipo de apuesta salga bien. En el mundo del anime me viene a la mente "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" como un buen ejemplo.

Pero vamos con "Baccano"... No creo que a nadie se le escape que uno de sus (teóricos) atractivos es esto que comento. Me atrevería a decir que prácticamente en "Baccano" todo se basa en que su atípica estructura narrativa funcione y su mezcla de tramas consiga enganchar. Seré claro: no funciona. No sabría decir exactamente por qué. Quizá los cambios entre las diferentes líneas temporales y las diferentes tramas son demasiado bruscos, demasiado frecuentes o demasiado cortos. Probablemente todas a la vez. En este tipo de historias, aunque en un principio la confusión reine en el espectador, todo debe sentirse como un enorme puzzle en el que las piezas van encajando poco a poco. En "Baccano" es como si para montar el puzzle te tiraran las piezas a la cara mientras tienes las manos atadas. En ningún momento es posible conectar con los diferentes puntos de vista de la trama, ya sea pasada, presente o futura, debido al tempo narrativo. Esto hace que al poco tiempo el desinterés vaya creciendo, incluso que haya partes que directamente estás deseando que acaben (en mi caso fue toda la parte de la mafia) porque desde casi el primerísimo instante fue imposible conectarte. Esta estructura y su ritmo es un completo horror, la auténtica tumba de "Baccano".

Como decía antes, el problema es que el que debería ser el punto fuerte no funciona, por lo que el conjunto inevitablemente hace aguas. La historia no es lo suficientemente potente para compensar nada. Realmente es bastante simple, por muchas vueltas absurdas que se le quiera dar y muchas fechas innecesarias con las que se quiera rellenar. No hay mucho que contar. Los personajes tampoco consiguen que la impresión general mejora. Y mira que hay una cantidad tan grande de ellos que abruma, pues ni por esas... Uniendo historia y personajes, mis momentos preferidos de "Baccano" son los que tenían como protagonistas a Isaac y Miria, y eso que son personajes, básicamente, de "alivio cómico". Así ha sido la cosa.

En cuanto a los apartados técnicos... Artísticamente tampoco ha conseguido convencerme. No he conectado con su estilo noventero (en cuestión de dibujo, no de ambientación), aunque al menos se agradece la cierta variedad de aspecto de los personajes, dada la gran cantidad que hay. El apartado sonoro quizá sea lo más destacado del anime, con melodías jazz de tono alegre muy acordes a su ambientación. Tampoco nada del otro mundo, no nos confundamos, pero entre tantos apartados fallidos, lo poco decente llama más la atención.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Anime) add

At this point I am not going to be the one to discover anything to anyone about "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". Years ago I read the original manga version of Arakawa's work. In fact, I have it complete in physical format and I keep it as gold in cloth. By this I mean that I no longer had the surprise factor of the script, characters and other elements at the time I started to see this adaptation, but even so I must say that I was amazed as if it had been the first time that I was immersed in the adventures ... of Ed and Al. Partly because "Fullmetal Alchemist" is already a wonder in itself, partly because I can't think of a better way to bring to anime the great work of the, also great, Hiromu Arakawa.

One of the strong points (if any) of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is, without any doubt, its plot. From the very beginning it is intuited that the story will be colossal, epic, of those that marks... and hell if it is. Throughout the 64 episodes of the anime, Arakawa gradually spins each character's background, each new situation, each detail and each nook and cranny. In this way he manages to weave a completely solid net, entertaining, impactful at times and that makes you stuck to the screen from the first minute to the last. Along the way he is able to perfectly combine really hard moments with other very emotional ones, without forgetting that funny white humor, which is also one of its great signs of identity. To name something negative (but I insist that it is basically to make a little counterweight to the amount of positive aspects it has), perhaps the main plot, especially towards the end, has moments in which a little entangled entering into metaphysical and philosophical aspects, which generates a little confusion at some point. Nothing important, of course.

From "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" I am very clear that its greatest value are its characters. In fact, I can state categorically that its character squad is the best I have ever seen in an anime. Just like that. For variety, charisma and ability to create empathy. It has a lot of merit that in a story with such a large number of characters, all of them border on such a high level. It's just spectacular. There are other animes with very good characters (I think "Steins;Gate" or "Shokugeki no Soma"), but they have a smaller quantity of them or they don't have such a high quality in the overall, but in specific characters. I think Arakawa's ability to create so many different and charismatic characters can only be compared to Eiichiro Oda's genius in that sense. Big words, yes, but totally deserved. To name a few, without forgetting the brilliant protagonists Edward and Alphonse Elric, there would be room for characters such as Winry, Roy Mustang (and his inseparable Hawkeye), Scar, May Chang, the Armstrong brothers (especially Olivier), Ling and Lan Fan, Hohenheim... All with their role, with their importance, with their background, and even with their own sub-plots. And the villains, of course: Lust, Envy, Greed... In short, a list that would be endless if I had to name all the great characters of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood".

Finally, I'd like to talk about the technical sections. So in short, I think that the visual section meets without emphasizing too much and on the contrary the musical section is outstanding. I will explain something more in detail. When I talk about the visual section I am not referring to the artistic style. Not at all. Arakawa's style, so characteristic, I like. It's relaxed yet detailed. She is also able to create a relative variety within the, also relative, visual realism of his works. But I think that technically this adaptation could have done a better job. Nothing serious, eh. Sometimes the drawing is not as good as it should be, especially in certain character animations or in the excessive blurring/simplification of scenarios. I'm not saying it's bad, but I'm saying that maybe sometimes it's not up to all the other great sections of "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". As is the musical section, which is a real marvel. Probably one of the best global OST of the anime, with some pieces that are directly masterpieces. There are so many that are worthwhile, but I personally get "Lullaby of Resembool" if I have to name just one of them. As for openings/endings, I won't tire of repeating that I prefer a small number of them, as this creates a strong relationship between melody and anime that helps to create a greater self-identity in our mind. In "FMA: Brotherhood" there are too many. Five openings and five different endings in 64 episodes. Excessive. It's a detail I can forgive such a good series, but it's reality and I want to comment it. At least most of them are quite good. If I have to choose, I keep OP1 and ED3.

A estas alturas no voy a ser yo quien descubra nada a nadie sobre "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". Hace años que leí la versión original en manga de la obra de Arakawa. De hecho, la tengo completa en formato físico y la guardo como oro en paño. Con esto quiero decir que ya no contaba con el factor sorpresa del guion, personajes y demás elementos en el momento que me puse a ver esta adaptación, pero aun así debo decir que me ha maravillado como si hubiera sido la primera vez que me sumergía en las aventuras de Ed y Al. En parte porque "Fullmetal Alchemist" ya es una maravilla de por sí, en parte porque no se me ocurre una mejor forma de llevar al anime la grandísima obra de la, también grandísima, Hiromu Arakawa.

Uno de los puntos fuertes (si es que tiene alguno flojo) de "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" es, sin ningún tipo de duda, su trama. Desde el principio ya se intuye que la historia será colosal, épica, de las que marcan... y vaya si es así. A lo largo de los 64 capítulos que dura el anime, Arakawa va hilando poco a poco cada trasfondo de personaje, cada nueva situación, cada detalle y cada recoveco. De esta forma logra tejer una red completamente sólida, entretenida, impactante por momentos y que te hace estar pegado a la pantalla desde el primer minuto hasta el último. Por el camino es capaz de conjugar perfectamente momentos verdaderamente duros con otros muy emotivos, sin olvidar ese humor blanco tan divertido, que es también una de sus grandes señas de identidad. Por nombrar algo negativo (pero insisto en que es básicamente por hacer un poco de contrapeso a la cantidad de aspectos positivos que tiene), quizá la trama principal, especialmente hacia el final, tiene momentos en las que se enmaraña un poco entrando en aspectos metafísicos y filosóficos, lo que genera un poco de confusión en algún momento puntual. Nada importante, eso sí.

De "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" tengo muy claro que su mayor valor son sus personajes. De hecho, puedo afirmar con rotundidad que su plantilla de personajes es la mejor que he visto nunca en un anime. Tal cual. Por variedad, carisma y capacidad de crear empatía. Tiene muchísimo mérito que en una historia con una cantidad tan grande de personajes, todos rayen a un nivel tan alto. Es algo simplemente espectacular. Hay otros animes con muy buenos personajes (se me vienen a la mente "Steins;Gate" o "Shokugeki no Soma"), pero tienen una cantidad menor de ellos o no tienen una calidad tan alta en el global, sino en personajes concretos. Creo que la capacidad de Arakawa para crear tantísimos personajes carismáticos y diferentes entre sí solo se puede comparar con la genialidad de Eiichiro Oda en ese sentido. Palabras mayores, sí, pero totalmente merecidas. Por nombrar a algunos, sin olvidar a los geniales protagonistas Edward y Alphonse Elric, tendrían cabida personajazos como Winry, Roy Mustang (y su inseparable Hawkeye), Scar, May Chang, los hermanos Armstrong (en especial Olivier), Ling y Lan Fan, Hohenheim... Todos con su papel, con su importancia, con su trasfondo, e incluso con sus subtramas propias. Y los villanos, por supuesto: Lust, Envy, Greed... En fin, una lista que sería interminable si tuviera que nombrar a todos los grandes personajes de "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood".

Para terminar quiero hablar de los apartados técnicos. Aquí veo claroscuros. Así de forma resumida, creo que el apartado visual cumple sin destacar demasiado y por el contrario el apartado musical es de sobresaliente. Paso a explicarme algo más en detalle. Cuando hablo del apartado visual no me estoy refiriendo al estilo artístico. Para nada. El estilo de Arakawa, tan característico, me gusta. Es desenfadado a la vez que detallado. También es capaz de crear una relativa variedad dentro del, también relativo, realismo visual de sus obras. Pero considero que técnicamente en esta adaptación se podría haber hecho un mejor trabajo. Nada grave, eh. A veces el dibujado no es todo lo bueno que debería, especialmente en ciertas animaciones de personajes o en el difuminado/simplificación excesivo de escenarios. No estoy diciendo que sea malo, pero sí que quizá en ocasiones no está a la altura de todos los demás magníficos apartados de "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". Como sí lo está el apartado musical, que es una auténtica maravilla. Probablemente una de las mejores OST globales del anime, con algunas piezas que directamente son obras maestras. Hay muchísimas que merecen la pena, pero yo personalmente me quedo con "Lullaby of Resembool" si tengo que nombrar solo una de ellas. En cuanto a los openings/endings, no me cansaré de repetir que prefiero poca cantidad de ellos, ya que así se crea una relación fuerte entre melodía y anime que ayuda a crear una identidad propia mayor en nuestra mente. En "FMA: Brotherhood" hay demasiados. Cinco openings y cinco endings diferentes en 64 capítulos. Excesivo. Es un detalle que puedo perdonarle a una serie tan buena, pero es la realidad y quiero comentarla. Al menos en su mayoría son bastante buenos. Si tengo que elegir, me quedo con el OP1 y con el ED3.

I've been deeply disenchanted with "Toradora!". The worst of all is that it wasn't because of its genre (I knew perfectly what I was getting into), its characters (which have charisma and are well defined), or even the majority of its plot itself (it's a "slice of life", it is what it is). What was the problem then? What is made the final perception so bittersweet and disappointing, even with all the good that "Toradora!" has (which it has)? Well... its progression is horrible. Very horrible. Like a garden labyrinth in which you go round and round in a circle and ... finally end up kicking a hole in the bushes.

I'm going to try to explain myself in more detail, but first I'd like to talk about the good things about "Toradora!", so if you just want to read about the bad you can skip to the end of this review. The best thing about this anime are the characters, I have no doubt about that. The two main characters, Taiga and Ryuji, are a breath of fresh air. Each with his own personality, peculiar and very marked, charismatic and with great capacity to generate sympathy and empathy. In addition, together they form a great couple, truly fun and endearing. The secondary ones are not left behind either. Characters like Minori or Ami become indispensable. Very great group of characters except Kitamura, which seems to me a quite forgettable character, generic until to say enough and without any attraction. The good level is maintained even in secondary characters with little importance, such as Yasuko (although towards the end it becomes crucial), Haruta or the misunderstood teacher, who gives some of the best comic scenes of the show almost without pretending it.

The other strong point of "Toradora!" is its sound section. Without being the best in the history of anime, it does have a very remarkable quality. Their openings/endings are quite solvent and are perfectly placed in each episode to multiply their impact, which makes them look even better than they are. The OST in general is also very good, with several melodies bordering on a high level, stay in your mind and you end up recognizing instantly. I also wanted to mention the great work of dubbing/voice acting. I've never done it in any review, because in fact I've never paid much attention to the role of the "seiyuu" except in very specific cases. The fact is that in "Toradora!" I was struck by the voices in characters such as Taiga, Yasuko and especially Minori. Not only because of their voices themselves, which in the end match their character is the minimum, but also because of the spectacular amount of registers and nuances they have throughout the 26 episodes according to the moment.

And I come to what has made me rethink my score and what has caused my final sensations, once the last episode has finished, have been so negative. As I said the development is very badly handled. The story swirls again and again in the same thing without advancing, except for very punctual moments (three or four perhaps) in which suddenly something shocking happens and everything takes a huge leap forward. On second thought, this structure is not far from any romance or "slice of life" anime, right? It is possible, but it is that... the end, the end is indefensible. I don't intend to value what is happening in itself, which is something more subjective (I personally think it's a horrendous choice on the part of screenwriters), but rather to focus on HOW it happens. Without making any spoilers, the final two episodes unleash a series of events in a ridiculously hasty way, very poorly explained and also (and this is what hurts me the most) completely incoherent with the tone of the plot and with the personalities of the protagonists. Without any sense. A disastrous final touch, a final touch that throws everything else to the ground. The epilogue after the last ending not only does not help to change this impression, but makes it even worse. I think it could hardly be worse. And it is a pity, because "Toradora!" has many good things and also a lot of potential, but it is totally wasted.

Me he llevado una profunda decepción con "Toradora!". Lo peor de todo es que no ha sido por su género (sabía perfectamente dónde me metía), por sus personajes (que tienen carisma y están bien definidos), ni siquiera por la mayoría de su trama propiamente dicha (es un "slice of life", es lo que es). ¿Cuál ha sido el problema entonces? ¿Qué es lo que ha hecho que, aún con todo lo bueno que "Toradora!" tiene (que lo tiene), la percepción final haya sido tan agridulce y decepcionante? Pues... su desarrollo es horrible. Muy horrible. Como un laberinto de jardín en el que das vueltas en círculo sin parar para acabar saliendo de allí abriendo un agujero a patadas en los arbustos.

Voy a intentar explicarme con más detalle, pero primeramente me gustaría hablar de las cosas buenas de "Toradora!", así que si solo quieres leer sobre lo malo puedes saltar hasta el final de esta review. Lo mejor de este anime son los personajes, de eso no tengo ninguna duda. Los dos protagonistas, Taiga y Ryuji, son un soplo de aire fresco. Cada uno con su propia personalidad, peculiar y muy marcada, carismáticos y con gran capacidad para generar simpatía y empatía. Además juntos forman una pareja genial, verdaderamente divertida y entrañable. Los secundarios tampoco se quedan atrás. Personajes como Minori o Ami se vuelven imprescindibles. Grandísimo plantel de personajes exceptuando a Kitamura, el cual me parece un personaje bastante olvidable, genérico hasta decir basta y sin ningún atractivo. El buen nivel se mantiene incluso en personajes secundarios con poca importancia, como Yasuko (aunque hacia el final se vuelve clave), Haruta o la incomprendida profesora, que deja algunas de las mejores escenas cómicas de la serie casi sin pretenderlo.

El otro punto fuerte de "Toradora!" es su apartado sonoro. Sin ser lo mejor de la historia del anime, sí que tiene una calidad muy destacable. Sus openings/endings son bastante solventes y están perfectamente colocados en cada capítulo para multiplicar su impacto, lo que hace que parezcan aún mejores de lo que son. La BSO en general también es muy buena, con varias melodías rayando a un gran nivel, de las que se quedan en tu mente y terminas reconociendo al instante. También quería mencionar el gran trabajo de doblaje/actuación de voz. Nunca lo he hecho en ninguna review, porque de hecho nunca me había fijado demasiado en el papel de los "seiyuu" salvo en casos muy puntuales. El caso es que en "Toradora!" me han llamado la atención en personajes como Taiga, Yasuko y especialmente Minori. No solo por sus voces, que al fin y al cabo que peguen con su personaje es lo mínimo, sino por la espectacular cantidad de registros y matices que tienen a lo largo de los 26 capítulos según el momento.

Y llego a lo que me ha hecho replantearme mi puntuación a la serie y a lo que ha provocado que mis sensaciones finales, una vez acabado el último capítulo, hayan sido tan negativas. Como decía el desarrollo está muy mal llevado. La historia remolonea una y otra vez en lo mismo sin avanzar lo más mínimo, salvo momentos muy puntuales (tres o cuatro quizá) en los que de pronto ocurre algo impactante y todo da un salto hacia adelante enorme. Joder, pensándolo bien esta estructura no dista mucho de cualquier anime de romance o cualquier "slice of life", ¿no? Es posible, pero es que... el final, el final es indefendible. No quiero entrar a valorar lo que ocurre en sí, que es algo más subjetivo (a mí personalmente me parece una elección horrorosa por parte de los guionistas), sino centrarme en CÓMO ocurre. Sin hacer ningún spoiler, en los dos capítulos finales se desatan una serie de acontecimientos de una forma ridículamente precipitada, muy mal explicada y además (y esto es lo que más me duele) completamente incoherente con el tono de la obra y con las personalidades de los protagonistas. Sin ningún sentido. Un broche final desastroso, un broche final que tira por tierra todo lo demás y para más inri en el punto más álgido de un anime. El epílogo después del último ending no solo no ayuda a cambiar esta impresión, sino que la empeora todavía más. Creo que difícilmente se podría hacer peor. Y es una pena, porque "Toradora!" tiene muchas cosas buenas y también mucho potencial, pero se queda totalmente desaprovechado.

I really don't know where to start with this review. Not because I don't have anything to say about each of its sections, but because everything is so average in "Nagi no Asukara" that it's hard to choose something to start with. I'm not saying that it's bullshit (it isn't), but I do consider that it has little in what really stands out or in what differs from other animes.

Well, actually I'm going to be truthful: probably if you're a fierce fan of romance you'll love it. And I insist on being a fierce fan because "Nagi no Asukara" is pure ... romance. Everything else, including the fantasy world created around it, is a simple excuse to develop loving relationships between the characters. Is this bad? I think the answer depends a lot on the person. I like romance, I think it's natural and it's logical that it's part of almost any story. But for me romance should be an addition, an extra to a main plot. In "Nagi no Asukara" it's the other way around. No discussion, in fact. You will know if it is your style.

Obviously in between all this romance (adolescent romance, by the way, with all that entails) there are also brushstrokes of a story that's not all bad. It seems a bit simplistic at first, but then it gets better little by little, even with some mythological "lore". It's no big deal, but at least it's dynamic and entertaining story. Even in a given moment there is a time leap with some characteristics... let's say.... "special". A very brave decision on the part of the scriptwriters and also very wise, because in these episodes is where the best level of the series is reached. Moreover, I would say that this section is of quite good quality in a general concept, not only within what is the "Nagi no Asukara" itself.

The staff of characters is quite common. Nothing that hasn't already been seen a thousand times. The main character, Hikari, is a histrionic kid with a good heart but a bit immature. Other main character, Manaka, is an adorable and kind girl that everybody likes. I don't like histrionics. I also think there comes a point when something is so "kawaii" that it's no longer credible. That's why I'm not convinced by either of them, although it's fair to say that they both evolve for the better throughout the series. I also prefer characters like Chisaki, always in the background, but with a much more credible and better constructed personality. I would also like to vindicate Akari, a character that seems to me to be completely wasted. It's unbelievable (for bad) how they make a girl who doesn't reach 25 looks like a real middle-aged lady. It may have some logic because "Nagi no Asukara" is aimed at a certain section of the public that probably has that perception of people of that age, but... damn, it's shocking. Generational impact, I suppose.

Finally we have the technical section and in this "Nagi no Asukara" does quite well. It has a cheerful and colorful artistic section, with a solid and detailed drawing, both on stages and in characters. The soundtrack is not far behind and has some melodies that sound very good. As for the openings/endings, I prefer the second opening.

Realmente no sé muy bien por dónde empezar con esta review. No porque no tenga nada que decir sobre cada uno de sus apartados, sino porque todo es tan promedio en "Nagi no Asukara" que es complicado elegir algo con lo que arrancar a comentarla. Que nadie se enfade antes de tiempo, no estoy diciendo que sea una basura (no lo es), pero sí considero que tiene poco en lo que realmente destaque o en lo que se diferencie de otros animes.

Bueno, en realidad voy a ser franco: probablemente si eres un fan acérrimo del romance te encantará. Y recalco lo de fan acérrimo porque "Nagi no Asukara" es puro romance. Todo lo demás, incluido el mundo fantástico creado alrededor, es una simple excusa para poder desarrollar relaciones amorosas entre los personajes. ¿Es esto malo? Creo que la respuesta depende mucho de la persona. A mí me gusta el romance, creo que es algo natural y que es lógico que forme parte de prácticamente cualquier historia. Pero para mí el romance debería ser un añadido, un extra respecto a una trama principal. En "Nagi no Asukara" ocurre al revés. Sin discusión, de hecho. Tú sabrás si es tu estilo.

Obviamente entre tanto romance (romance adolescente, por cierto, con todo lo que ello conlleva) también hay pinceladas de una historia que no está del todo mal. Parece algo simplona al principio, aunque luego va mejorando poco a poco, incluso con algo de "lore" mitológico y tal. No es nada del otro mundo, pero al menos es dinámica y entretenida. Incluso en un momento dado hay un salto temporal con unas caracteristicas... digamos... "especiales". Una decisión muy valiente por parte de los guionistas y también muy acertada, porque en estos capítulos es donde se alcanza el mejor nivel de la serie. Es más, diría que ese tramo es de una calidad bastante buena en un concepto general, no solo dentro de lo que es la propia "Nagi no Asukara".

El plantel de personajes es bastante común. Nada que no se haya visto ya mil veces. El protagonista, Hikari, es un chaval histriónico con buen corazón pero un poco bastante inmaduro. La protagonista, Manaka, es una chica adorable y amable que cae bien a todo el mundo. A mí no me gusta el histrionismo ni un pelo. También considero que llega un punto en el que algo es tan "kawaii" que deja de ser creíble. Por eso ninguno de los dos termina de convencerme, aunque es justo señalar que a lo largo de la serie ambos van evolucionando para bien. Igualmente yo prefiero a personajes como Chisaki, siempre en segundo plano, pero con una personalidad mucho más verosimil y mejor construida. También me gustaría reivindicar a Akari, personaje que me parece completamente desaprovechado. Es increíble (para mal) cómo consiguen que una chica que no llega a los 25 años parezca una auténtica señorona de mediana edad. Vale que pueda tener cierta lógica porque "Nagi no Asukara" va dirigida a cierto sector del público que probablemente tenga esa percepción de la gente de esa edad, pero... joder, es chocante. Impacto generacional supongo.

Por último tenemos el apartado técnico y en esto "Nagi no Asukara" cumple bastante bien. Tiene un apartado artístico alegre y colorido, con un dibujo sólido y detallado, tanto en escenarios como en personajes. El apartado sonoro no se queda atrás y la banda sonora tiene alguna que otra melodía que suena muy bien. En cuanto a los openings/endings, me quedaría con el segundo opening.

"Mushishi" is a very special piece. I would say that it is a "rara avis" within the anime. Its main and most striking features are not something that abounds in this sector. I'm not saying it's unique or pioneering (I really don't know), but it does have some very uncommon aspects that catch you from the first moment.

To begin with, "Mushishi" is a procedural series. Each episode transports us to an indeterminate moment in time in which the protagonist, Ginko, is enveloped in a story with the mysterious Mushi as its central axis. There is really no time line, or ... at least it is never shown directly. It doesn't matter either. It's not necessary. It is true that in the background we are learning more about Ginko or about the functioning of his world or of the Mushi, but this is something inherent to the sum of moments throughout the episodes, not to the existence of a conventional timeline. The best proof of how well implemented it is is that you could see any of the 26 episodes in any order and there would be no problem. Literally. You would still enjoy it the same way.

The fact that they are independent episodes, together with the fact that the stories are usually accompanied by a very strong emotional charge, make "Mushishi" an anime to be enjoyed little by little. An anime that to taste slowly while we submerge ourselves fully in its atmosphere and we unconsciously envelop ourselves in its aura. Quiet, relaxed, mystical, magical. Apart also usually requires as much attention as possible, as it is quite intense in terms of depth and complexity philosophical, moral, metaphorical. It is better not to miss a single detail or get lost at any time, since in that case it is possible that it becomes complicated to follow it as it deserves. In my opinion, and because it is so trendy nowadays, I would like to add that to see "Mushishi" in one of those episode-eating marathons is a real waste.

I was mentioning before the enveloping atmosphere surrounding "Mushishi". This is greatly helped by a technical section that is truly meticulous and bordering on a spectacular level. I want to highlight the beautiful artistic section (although perhaps with its weak point in the repetitive character design), but what really fascinated me completely is the sound section. The sound effects are fascinating and incredibly immersive. In the right amount, at the right times. Pure nature. Never forgetting the soundtrack, its music. And what music, simply great. It is impossible for me to imagine better melodies for "Mushishi". They are perfect for it. It's a symbiotic relationship, practically. Melodies like "Mushishi no Theme", "Makura Kouji", "Unasaka Yori" or "Rinkou" are a fucking wonder. Just like that.

"Mushishi" es una obra muy especial. Diría que es una "rara avis", casi un bicho raro, dentro del anime. Sus características principales y más llamativas no son algo que abunde en este mundillo. No estoy diciendo que sea única ni pionera (realmente no lo sé), pero sí que tiene unos rasgos muy poco comunes y que te atrapan desde el primer momento. Lejos de conseguir que esto chirríe o parezca fuera de lugar, se potencia al máximo y se convierte en abanderado de un estilo propio muy peculiar.

Para empezar, "Mushishi" es una serie procedimental. Cada capítulo nos transporta a un momento temporal indeterminado en el que el protagonista, Ginko, se ve envuelto en una historia con los misteriosos Mushi como eje central. Realmente no hay línea temporal, o al menos nunca se muestra de forma directa. Tampoco importa. No es necesario. Sí es cierto que de fondo vamos conociendo más datos sobre Ginko o sobre el funcionamiento de su mundo o de los Mushi, pero esto es algo inherente a la suma de momentos a lo largo de los capítulos, no a la existencia de una línea temporal convencional. La mejor prueba de lo bien implementado que está es que podrías ver cualquiera de los 26 capítulos sea en el orden que sea y no habría ningún problema. Literalmente. Seguirías disfrutándola de la misma manera.

El tema de que sean capítulos independientes entre sí, unido a que las historias suelen ir acompañadas de una carga emocional muy fuerte, hacen de "Mushishi" un anime para disfrutar poco a poco. Un anime que paladear lentamente mientras nos sumergimos de lleno en su ambiente y nos envolvemos inconscientemente de su aura. Tranquilo, relajado, místico, mágico. Aparte también suele requerir toda la atención posible, ya que es bastante intensa en cuanto a profundidad y complejidad filosófica, moral, metafórica. Es mejor no perderse ni un solo detalle ni despistarse en ningún momento, ya que en ese caso es posible que se haga complicada de seguir tal y como merece. En mi opinión, y debido a que tan de moda están hoy en día, querría añadir que verse "Mushishi" en uno de esos maratones devora-capítulos es un auténtico desperdicio. Una forma horrible de enfocar una propuesta que es prácticamente la antítesis de esos atracones a toda prisa.

Hablaba antes de la envolvente atmósfera que rodea a "Mushishi". A ello contribuye muchísimo un apartado técnico verdaderamente cuidado y que raya a un nivel espectacular. Quiero destacar el bello apartado artístico (aunque quizá con su punto débil en lo repetitivo del diseño de personajes), pero lo que realmente me ha fascinado por completo es el apartado sonoro. Los efectos de sonido son fascinantes e increíblemente inmersivos. En la cantidad justa, en los momentos adecuados. Pura naturaleza. Sin olvidar bajo ningún concepto a la banda sonora, su música. Y qué música, simplemente genial. Me es imposible imaginar unas melodías mejores para "Mushishi". Son perfectas, encajan como un guante. Es una relación simbiótica, prácticamente. Melodías como "Mushishi no Theme", "Makura Kouji", "Unasaka Yori" o "Rinkou" son una jodida maravilla. Sin más.
