Qaiz! How are you, man?! Sorry for the extremely late reply!

First of all, tonal is right on target to how I feel about it! It's a much better descriptor than what I would have used previously in describing these different generations. You know, I feel (as I am positive you do as well) that a show's look isn't what makes it feel a certain way, but its tone, its passion, the environment in which it was created, just how like 80s pop is so invigorating and driving, even encouraging, while so much 90s music was mellow, negative, and understated (a trait which has continued all throughout the 00s and 10s, too, I feel).

And just as to be expected, the history you've cited which I didn't even realize existed lines up perfectly with what I expected you to believe (and what I, in turn, believe also)! The Bubble Economy and the environmental works of '86-'91 sure make a lot of sense now, and perhaps they caused a large transition within the anime industry? Well, you know more than I about this. I find it quite admirable how you've done all this research to discover all of this. It's quite insightful to know, so thanks for sharing it with me!

Yes, I will have to pick up Macross again soon, as I just can't find time to watch that one anymore, for now. I don't know why, but I'm putting down GunBuster just for a moment, too, but I have enjoyed what I have seen of it, and I think I will pick it up again, soon.

Patlabor, on the other hand, is another story. Just reading what you've written here makes me want to watch it tonight, and I believe I will! I'll start with the TV series, as you've suggested! ;D

And, again, I hope you enjoy LOTGH and VOTOMS! I'm impressed at your zeal to find Blu-rays of of LOTGH, and I wish you luck in doing so haha! I've kind of put it down at the moment, myself, as I have gotten out of it and it's hard to get back into, with its copious amounts of details covered in each episode and all.

Oh, by the way, I've watched a few episodes of City Hunter since we last talked and it's just so enjoyable. I try to balance it out by reading the manga and watching the anime, but the manga translation I'm reading is just so poor that I just can't wait to watch the anime, so I think I'll complete that first, now. And I was wrong, I think: I think Saeba is about the same in both the manga and anime, but I had just pictured him differently when I read the manga. He's a riot indeed!

Yes! I have seen a few Ghibli Films, like Totoro, Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service (my first one), and Spirited Away, and I want to see more. I haven't taken the time to add all of the studio's anime to my list yet, but it's been a constant goal to do so. I just added Whisper of the Heart at your suggestion, too, so I'll give that one a go soon enough! (it looks a lot like Kiki's, at least superficially, so I'm sure I'll love it).

ACTUALLY, I think I downloaded ALL of Perfect Blue to my hard drive a few years ago, but I've only watched the first episode of it since. I enjoyed the first episode a lot, though, so I'll try to get back into it eventually.

Hope you're doing great, by the way! Let me know if you need anything from me!

By the way, I saw you were watching a show called Gallery Fake, and it looks amazing, so I added that too. I just wish I could keep up with all these good shows you've suggested!

Also, I love your new profile pic! I just wish I was far enough into City Hunter to know who that lovely lady was...

(also, Saeba's just a little more goofy in the anime than in the manga, though he's still quite the character in there, too, haha. I actually like the differences between the two formats, as it makes both feel worth going into)

And you'll love Ping Pong. The art is really cool, but so is the story and the voice acting. You'll see what I mean! ;D

Also, have you tried watching Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes/LotGH) yet? I think you'd like that one a lot, too, though I wasn't really into it until about episode 3, but after that, it just keeps getting better and better!
Gauchorino May 4, 2015 1:53 AM
Yeah man, where ya been all my life? I feel EXACTLY the same way, and unless you're watching the anime that the edgy teenagers consider "2deep4you," you might as well just consider not even watching anime at all, apparently. Often they have absolutely no what they're criticizing, however, which makes the situation all the sadder, as they're missing out on what might be the BEST of the best shows there are! :/

I get those same responses all the time, especially considering my favorites don't really adhere to the "canonized" standards. Yeah, art style criticism is such a stupid, arbitrary thing to talk about. I think a lot of new anime look like crap, but hey, that doesn't mean they actually are crap! Hojo Tsukasa might make the most attractive art style I've ever seen, which is one of the things that drew me to City Hunter in the first place (as well as being exposed to this -- which is something that DESPERATELY needs to be translated haha). Yuu Watase is another one of my favorite artists (she's did Fushigi Yuugi, which is one of the few shojos I like, largely thanks to its actiony, historical setting), and her work is gorgeous, in my opinion. Haruhiko Mikimoto?! I generally love Macross's and Gunbuster's art style, too, so thanks for the namedrop! ;D And exactly! The artstyles of many of those old shows have just so much feeling behind them, ESPECIALLY compared to post-2002 anime. I tend to feel early 80s has a very romantic feel to it, generally, while 90s has a very adventurous feel, and late 80s is a great combo of both. Much anime today is just too "edgy" and its not heartwarming or genuinely exciting. I tried watching Hunter x Hunter (2011) and while it's technically good, it's just not the same feeling you get when you watch something like the original Dragonball.... :(

Don't worry, I'm loving City Hunter's anime already! In fact, just reading your post made me want to go watch another episode of it. I'm in LOVE with the OP. I also get a huge smile on my face when I hear it (ah, even the manga will give you that smile to a degree, but it can't compare to hearing beautiful music in addition to beautiful visuals!!!). I don't think that missing scenarios that I mentioned will action be a problem, because City Hunter has like 5 different continuing series, making it have over a trillion episodes, right? They probably will cover everything that's in the manga, then, haha! Also, this series is just so inspiring...I want to BE Ryo when I see this!! I'm pretty sure this will be on my top 5 anime, soon enough.

No, no, don't worry! I'm excited for Macross! :3

Wow, I can't wait for more Gunbuster, now! ;D

Oh yeah, you'll really like VOTOMS, especially from what you like! It's not too peppy, so you'll probably want to watch it when you're in a relaxed mood. The OST is really jazz/funk based, and it sounds brilliant (kinda Bebop/Big O-ish, but possibly better). I'll stop there though, haha!

Yeah, as a person who's the biggest fan of Orguss on MAL told me, the story of Orguss relies more on its fantastical setting and drama rather than its mechs in its storytelling, while Macross does more of the opposite, right?

Oh man, I was just going to read Patlabor, but now you've convinced me! No no, this is one of the best conversations I've ever had on MAL, trust me! If only so many others on here knew how truly exciting, passionate, and heartwarming 80s-90s anime could be like we do, I think, this place would be a lot more joyful and cheerful of a place!
Gauchorino May 4, 2015 12:14 AM
Haha, don't worry, I love sending requests and giving them, especially people who I can talk to about anime I've ACTUALLY SEEN, especially a person who's about my age! ;)

Wow, now I really want to see it more! The only thing I really didn't like about the first episode compared with the manga is that they really toned down some of the content for their target audience and truncation of a TV series (for instance, the assassin from the first ep is not simply an assassin but he also
), and sadly that means that a few scenarios were left out, as well. I think you'll learn more about Makimura by reading the manga, but then again, I haven't made it far in either format of the series... Indeed, the OST is fantastic though and yeah, so is the voice acting!! Let's not forget about that hnggggg art style (and so many people on this site think 80s anime looks like trash?! lol......)!! Hojo Tsukasa is a brilliant, brilliant man.

I'm also slow at starting shows, sadly, and I'm even worse at finishing them, so I understand completely what you're going through haha.

Yeah, I don't read manga often, either (as you can see by my list, I've complete 0 lol), but since I was already watching a bunch of anime at the time and since City Hunter already seemed very unique compared to the rest of the things I was watching, I thought I'd give reading City Hunter a try, first. You'll absolutely love it, I assure you!

Yes, you have amazing taste! Tbh, I didn't like Macross after watching its first episode, but it picked up by the second, and now I love it and understand its appeal a little more haha. I see that you have Orguss in your PTW. It's technically Macross's (unrelated) sequel, though it's quite different from Macross in many ways. Many people who have seen both are disappointed by its uniqueness in comparison to Macross, but I think if you take it as it is, you'll definitely enjoy it. It's definitely one of my favorite anime now, I think! ;)

By the way, I hope you don't mind another recommendation, but have you heard of Armored Trooper: VOTOMS? It's really, really, really good, and I think you'll like it, since you like Patlabor, etc., but even if you didn't, the writing and the character development is REALLY good!

And yes, I loved the first episode of GunBuster so far, and now you've made me really excited to watch more of it! xD

By the way, are you very active on the forums? I don't really care for most of the boards in the forums, but Forum Games is a blast, usually, so you should come hang out over there, man! :3

Dude, this is so freaking spectacular! I know almost NO ONE who knows about this series on this site, so I'm so happy right now! <3

I actually JUST watched the first episode of the anime like 3 hours ago, so this is such a crazy coincidence!! I recommend also reading the manga if you like the anime, as I think it's a bit better than the anime, from what I've seen from the first ep. (though that episode was really good, especially with dat amazing OST... T_T)
