My tl;dr is: PlanetES is the best space series, ever.
The series brings beautiful illustration to a realistic future where humans have extensive operations in space. Perhaps it is surprising that no one else has ever seriously attempted such a project, but without a doubt, PlanetES has not been challenged in this area by any media I know of.
Over a decade since it aired, a small cult following of the series can still be seen online. I've watched many series, and this is one of a small handful which are seriously worth remembering. It has aged well, and I continue to rewatch it
...
every now and then.
Criticisms of the series most often fall on the social dynamics portrayed of the characters. Some people find some characters annoying, some don't like the romance part, and some don't like the ending. All of these relate to a subtle element of the series - that it is very adult. It portrays a part of the life of young professionals in space. Going along with this, there are politics which are out of their control, many parts of life are actually annoying, and romance is complicated by their dreams. Nevertheless, as the tension builds toward the end, the techies are drawn in along with the casual watchers.
Its humility is also a part of its downfall. The intro, for instance, sacrificed catchiness for appropriateness. Its world is full of amazing art to behold, but it is true to its premise and mostly utilitarian.
