You could say that I "discovered" anime around 2002, and I've been hooked ever since. Since around 2004 I started a relatively intense program of learning Japanese, and in 2005 I was introduced to Book-Off and begun reading manga heavily. Because of that, most of my activity is centered around the 2004-2007 time frame, and it tapered off since then.

I'm still on the lookout for good new series, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I have strong genre leanings. My most-loved are generally science fiction, but strong stories, themes, and concepts can easily make up for this. For example, I liked some Gundam series for the politics, and often found the battles and giant robots to distract from the point.

Adult-focused series are usually preferable by far, but we're often surprised by where we can find quality character development. For instance, Hikaru no Go is the type of series that comes out of nowhere to build deep characters and strong themes.
