This is the most 5/10 series you could get. An isekai in name only with some cool spells and rules and boring creatures, characters who appear out of nowhere that are great in concept but get barely used, crucial character traits that are completely forgotten near the end and to top it off the most boring and repetitive character designs wearing decent outfits... I only watched it for the lesbians and even that aspect is mediocre. Kinda like Zootopia, this series wants to talk about marginalized groups being represented by humanoid beasts and treat the oppression that comes from being different.
It has the same problems as that movie. After all, the prejudices against every animal are real. They are beasts and they will act like the beast that they are. How can you talk about prejudices when every character's prejudices are real? Aside from that, I would say that the final message is even worse than the Zootopia one. As a trans woman myself, I am excited every time I see trans people in media being represented without being misserable creatures that can only suffer, be a joke, or fulfill a sexual fetish.
Until now I have watched dozens of anime, and I only found 2 good trans characters from 2 different shows. Hurou Musuko isn't one of those. To be fair, trans kids are very rare in media, even more than trans adults.
