The constant fear that something has replaced a loved one, the claustrophobia of living in a small rural town, the urge to kiss an eldritch monster you have a crush on; all of the tension in the story works well and builds such a dreary, suspenseful atmosphere. The glimmers of hope through relationships and community get snuffed out as the tension rips them to pieces before your very eyes.
With a story this engaging, the biggest crime would be to let down the intense atmosphere before it really gets going, and thankfully the story continues drudging through the mire it created. I love horror stories with

This book is honestly the single best criticism of isekai I've seen. A lot of other works poke fun at some of the dumber tropes common in the genre, but JK Haru goes for the throat with some hard hitting criticism of the exploitative and sexist themes the genre frequently relies on. The book doesn't come from a place of hate for the genre though, rather a genuine yearning for something better.
The dry humor and mundane descriptions of sex might be a turn-off for some, but the abrasive humor and themes made for a fantastic dark comedy. The story was entertaining but as far ...

The New Gate is a charming and unique isekai with a severe issue holding it back. Shin basically being time-traveled is an interesting premise and it's fun that he knows about the world's rules but knows nothing about the current state of things. Shin uses his overpowered status to help people and the world grow, leading to sweet interactions throughout the story.
The biggest issue, however, is how the power system works. So the world is structured like a video game so there are levels, skills, and gear like you would see in an MMO. Unfortunately, it's not clear how characters can get stronger other ... |
