Not a lot of people liked the Chimera Ant Arc and it ruined their experience with the anime.
The chimera ant arc ended in the manga at around 2012. There was never a lack of source material until the very end of the series. It was written that way in the manga as the chimera ant arc takes up 132 chapters which is twice as much as the second longest arc in the manga. Even the narrating was written in the manga. There were no fillers during this arc, as a matter of fact, there are two filler episodes in the prior 75 episodes.
