I'm going to start off with this: Paranoia Agent is my favorite anime of all time, and nothing has approached it for me. The feelings brought out by the final episode stayed with me for months after watching it, and the anime itself made me reconsider the human condition. However biased this might make the following review, please take such a fact into account when reading.
Story - 9/10
The story is what makes Paranoia Agent so special; unparalleled in its complexity and approach to psychology. I have never seen anything like it, as it forgoes traditional plot structures that have already been seen, choosing to contain
...
both an episodic and connected approach in its episode structure. However, such is also its downfall, as some of the episodes in the middle feel like filler, oddly enough, which can cripple an anime as short as this.
Art - 10/10
Satoshi Kon's unique art style never ceases to amaze. His characters are drawn like caricatures, setting them apart from the leagues of generic character designs that haunt the industry. Their looks reflect their personalities, and they look almost lifelike, despite how enhanced their features are when drawn. Each character is unique, set perfectly apart from the others, so that even the two detectives show a stark contrast.
Sound - 9/10
While not every track is memorable, I found myself constantly entranced by what Susamu Hirasawa has done with this. The guy is a musical genius, my favorite musician that also happens to team up with my favorite director, and his songs fit perfectly with the tone and style of Paranoia Agent.
Character - 10/10
Paranoia Agent is all about the characters, and Kon does not disappoint. Much like how they are drawn, each character acts like they are pulled straight out of real life. Some characters are absolutely despicable human beings that are portrayed in such a way that the viewer can't help but feel sorry for them. Everyone has a good and bad side in Paranoia Agent, along with a sense of mystery that never goes away, not even with the show's spectacular ending, which leaves questions that should be left open unanswered.
Enjoyment - 10/10
As I said before, Paranoia Agent is my favorite show of all time. Barring some choice books, it might just be my favorite story of all time as well. While it isn't for everyone, Paranoia Agent should be watched by anyone intrigued by its concept, as they will not be disappointed.
