Preliminary Spoiler

Writing a review for Inuyashiki is hard because my feelings for the story have warped so much since the days I first began reading it a few years ago. It starts out so strong and ends up spiraling out of control midway focusing too much on what I essentially consider "despair porn" chapters and moments.

What drew me into this series was the idea of an elderly protagonist. It's rare in manga to see something like this, as many writers tend to gravitate towards highschool students to try and appeal to their target demographic. Instead what we got was a fascinating view of the life of ...

I've never written a manga review before, and this one will be brief--I just felt that I had to write SOMETHING after reading the reviews for Inuyashiki on here. At the time of posting this, there are only two other reviews, and they use words like "hilarious" and "heartwarming" to describe this series that is "recommended for everyone". Having read that, I went into this thinking that it was a lighthearted action-comedy. It is definitely none of the above.

Once you get past the exposition and into the midst of the story, this is an extremely dark manga with many parts that the ...

What it means to be human is a topic that has been discussed and explored throughout many works of science fiction. I've seen this idea and concept brought up so many times, I've lost count. Inuyashiki brings up this concepts but twists it in a way that I haven't really seen before.

I'll get to that when I can but first, an overview of this manga.

Story: 8
The premise of Inuyashiki isn't too horribly complicated. A man by the name of Inuyashiki is living a very boring, unfulfilling life. His family doesn't care all that much for him, he doesn't do a whole lot throughout the day ...

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

The thing about this manga is that it started out pretty interesting.

We have Inuyashiki, a man who hasn't aged as well as you'd hoped. Burdened by the responsibility of being the main breadwinner of the family, a wife who is no longer affectionate with him, a daughter who introduces him as her ''grandpa'' because she's ashamed of how he looks and a son who harbors resentment towards his father because he's being bullied at school (i.e. bullies take his lunch money and pick on him because he doesn’t have enough of it. Though his father is unaware of what his son is dealing ...

This manga...is something else.

I was drawn into it entirely by the cover and the synopsis, but I was expecting something like a slice of life where an old man becomes young again and gets a second chance to achieve a happier life with a family who actually cares for him. Instead, I got something quite unexpected.

You know that concept where a senior protagonist is presented in an environment with a bunch of thuggish, unruly teenagers and the work sort of presents as if modern days is getting more dangerous and reckless? Imagine if a mangaka gets a hold of that idea and you'll get Inuyashiki.

In ...

this could be considered as the most hilarious/unique manga of all time.
imagine with me.........when you become an adult, your life is boring, your family doesn't like you, your wife is ugly....and to top it of you still have only 3 months to life because of a stomach cancer....but one day you wake up and you find out that you became a machine ( jetpack - invincible - your life is not in danger anymore....)...yeah i don't know what you would do in a case like this, but this manga manages to answer this stupid fantasy question:
Inu Yashiki is an 50 years old but looks like ...

TL;DR with a brief, spoiler free comment on the ending: the initial premise is very solid and gripping, the art is alright, the characters are unappealing except for one, the pacing is somewhat grueling at times and the ending genuinely made me feel like this whole affair was a waste of my time. Read this series only if you deeply enjoyed Gantz for whatever reason, or if you're curious to find out why I hated the ending as much as I did.

As for the review itself:
I initially decided to pick up this series upon seeing some out of context panels floating around on ...

Explaining the appeal of Inuyashiki, taken from my instagram:

Inuyashiki is a manga from the mangaka behind Gantz and is important as it shows that Oku (the mangaka) has the capability to create not one, but two fantastic works of fiction. He took some of the best and often underused elements from Gantz and put a lot more focus on them. This gives Inuyashiki its own identity despite coming after the massive success that was Gantz.

Unlike Gantz, Inuyashiki is a story that focuses more or less exclusively on the two main characters and those who they interact with. There are still the occasional side stories that ...

Hiroya Oku's follow-up to Gantz continues his exploration of nihilism in a hyper-real Japan, with an enticing premise and promising protagonist. There's not enough older folk utilised as main characters in manga, and Oku relishes the chance to shove Mr Inuyashiki into excruciating scenarios and to pull him out in cathartic fashion. He's joined by a malevolent antagonist who has a heavy presence all throughout the tale.

Which is a problem. But more about that later. Let me get some positives out of the way.

Oku really nails the banal cruelty of internet comments that you see everywhere online, from 2chan to reddit to MAL itself. We ...

Can Hiroya Oku do anything better than "Gantz"?

I have commented in previous posts on social media, but I repeat: I have a routine to know absolutely nothing before reading a title. Synopsis? What's that for? I like to analyze a work without external influences and, from time to time, I rely on notes to see if the time spent was rewarded or not.

With "Inuyashiki" it was no different. In fact, this one, which is part of Hiroya Oku, author of "Gantz", was an even more extreme case: I didn't remember that it was a heavyweight author, because ... I didn't read "Gantz" either (and the ...

I actually watched the first episode of the anime, But got bored. I saw there was a manga and decided to give it a try and god.. It was so good. It’s basically about this old man, just wanting to do everything for his family- But they are very selfish.. One day he goes on a walk with his dog and gets hit by some white light. As a ‘sorry’ to whoever hit him lmao they repay him with a superhero like body. He’s become all machines, And can do unspeakable things.

He finds that his new destiny is to save people around Japan.. But ...

I love this and totally recommend it. I heard about the anime coming soon and the story interested me so much, i read it. The story, the character, everything is so unique from the usual. I mean the MC is an old man. That's pretty unusual. The first few pages were boring cuz it was about a sweety old man and his family who doesn't seem to like him. Btw this is the first manga i completed. I've watched over 300 anime, but this my first manga and i love it. Got me totally hocked. Give it an 8. I was mostly ...

Inuyashiki is a Sci-Fi seinen manga by Oku Hiroya published in Evening magazine.
The manga tells a story of Ichirou Inuyashiki,a 52 years old grandpa who has a hard life - he has a badly paid job, his family ignores him and he's been diagnosed with cancer. One night Inuyashiki is killed in a alien crash and becomes a machine. He realizes he in not human anymore and wants to help other people as much as possible.
This may sound like a bad superhero story but the further you are into it the darker it gets. The art is amazing. The best part about this manga are ...

so yes, basically there is absolutely no way you wont enjoy reading inu yashiki, it being a simple narrative yet handling the things of the story pretty well
inu yashiki in my perspective is the best dynamic of a antagonist and protaginist with beautiful contrast between them
being out of the the normal shounen or seinen demographic, the protaginist is rather an old man,who is super wholesome whom you cant possiblly hate, and the antagonist being a young kid,is very hateful, yet it is what that is defining his character.
the story is a super fast read and being bored reading it isnt an option, every chapter helps in the progression of ...

Hiroya Oku is a very unsubtle man when it comes to his work. He wants to state his opinions through his art, and so he does so with the thinnest line of subtext possible. He sees the people he hates killed or punished through his work, and he portrays the suffering of innocents through the cruelest and most brutal ways possible. This makes him a very polarizing writer, so I understand why many come to view his work unfavorably. However, I think this is what makes his work so interesting to read.

While Inuyashiki may be categorized as edgy or torture porn, I don't think that's ...

Inuyashiki is a heartwarming story about family, what it means to be human, and androids shooting people through computer screens. It's short and simple, yet well-executed and I recommend it to anyone that isn't too disturbed by gore or the occasional infanticide.

Story - 10

Inyuashiki's story is simple and to the point. Ichirou Inuyashiki is a kindhearted 58 year old salaryman with a crumbling family life. When he's diagnosed with terminal cancer, he's too scared to tell his family as he's worried they won't care if he dies. Overwhelmed with emotion, he takes his dog and runs to a nearby park in the middle of ...

Inuyashiki is just so... bland. The premise is interesting, but that's about it.
Characters are alright: the two main ones are fairly multifaceted and engaging, but not enough to provide any interesting moral struggles or to clash with each other in ways that aren't extremely unsurprising, while the supporting cast exists only to be narrative devices whose job is to highlight the main characters, and they do that job efficiently.
The story goes exactly like you'd expect after reading the premise, down to the ending. This linearity isn't necessarily a bad thing, since there are still many interesting fun scenarios that are cool to witness, but not ...

What? That's just my review for this manga lmao, it starts out with a good premise, but after a few more chapters you just want it to calm down and slow the pace down. Like dude, they introduce new characters and the author obviously wants you to care about them but the pace is too f**cken fast for anyone to give a flying sh*t, and the part that had me intrigue the most was about the aliens and how they crashed down to Earth and killed our two main protagonists and made them into basically weapons.... well guess what, the only time you'll ever hear ...

Inuyashiki, the latest action manga from the author of Gantz... which will remind you of Gantz in many ways. (Not kidding, it actually shills—er, I mean references Gantz on multiple occasions to ensure you don't forget about it.)

This relatively short manga—you can finish it in an evening—immediately stands out thanks to its unconventional protagonist, CGI-heavy backgrounds the author is known for, and some thriller/body horror elements that may and probably will disturb the squeamish.

So, is it actually good? I would say it's almost there. It's rather captivating, fast-paced, well-drawn, and can be touching at times, so I would give it a very soft recommendation. Could ...

"Inuyashiki" is a science-fiction manhwa series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. The story revolves around two men - a middle-aged salaryman named Ichiro Inuyashiki and a high school student named Hiro Shishigami - who both gain extraordinary abilities after being caught in a strange explosion.

One of the biggest strengths of "Inuyashiki" is its exploration of complex themes such as morality, humanity, and the consequences of power. The series raises thought-provoking questions about what it means to be human and how our actions can have ripple effects on those around us. The characters are complex and well-developed, with nuanced motivations that make them feel like ...
