tl;dr: A manga that’s a slow burn age gap romance focused more on being amusing than having a lot of substance, but does that well, especially due to its amazing art. 

The story and characters in this manga were pretty straight forward. It’s a romance with characters separated by an age gap that slowly grow closer while also dealing with pursuing their own dreams. Each provides the other with emotional support in pursuing their dreams, which contributes to relationship development. And eventually things reach the standard time skip happy ending such stories have. The story is pretty standard, and though it does have its moments, overall ... it's not particularly deep. It focuses much more on really small chapters focused around comedy than any major events or arcs. Still, it’s written pretty well within those constraints, feeling well paced despite not much happening most of the time, and hence overall ultimately is quite amusing. The art is absolutely gorgeous and furthermore completely in color, which is pretty rare for manga, and used really well here.

Puppy Lovers é só mais um romance genérico que foca em um relacionamento extremamente estranho, que por algum motivo igualmente estranho é bem fetichizado no Japão, que é o relacionamento com pessoas menores de idade...

Os diálogos sem função
Esse mangá tem um sério problema na construção de seus diálogos, problemas esses que vão além da narrativa, pois existem uma poluição visual muito grande nas páginas, como diálogos extensos dentro de apenas um único balão, e cada maldita página tem muitos balões de diálogo, isso porque ainda não ... falei sobre o posicionamento dos balões e do ritmo de leitura do mangá, que é uma merda.
Os diálogos desse mangá são apresentados exclusivamente para construir uma cena sexualmente excitante, ou então para enfatizar a todo o momento o quanto a personagem principal, Inui é “impotente” frente ao talento do Souta, coisa que vou abordar com mais calma ao longo dessa resenha. No geral, os diálogos me soam muito pouco naturais, eu não sinto de fato que aqueles personagens sentem algo um pelo outro ao analisar suas conversas, então realmente tudo gira em torno do sexo.

Uma relação disfuncional
Eu sinceramente não consigo entender ao certo o romance dos personagens principais, pois em nenhum momento aquilo foi construído de uma forma minimamente descente, tudo é “jogado em nossa cara” de uma forma pouco natural. O autor simplesmente quer que você acredite que Souta ama Inui ao passar nem 12 horas ao seu lado. Logo no início do mangá temos uma declaração de amor de Souta para Inui, mas faz literalmente horas que eles se conheceram, e tudo bem, isso faz até sentido, porque Souta é só um garoto de 13 anos a final de contas, o problema mesmo está na Inui.
A personagem da Inui vive um conflito narrativamente interessante, ao mesmo tempo que ela admira Shouta por seu incrível talento, ela também se sente mal por não possuir uma força de vontade ou um talento tão grande quanto ao de Shouta, e ao longo do mangá isso vai sendo apresentado de uma maneira muito mal desenvolvida, com diálogos expositivos, cenas muito clichês e tudo que se pode esperar de um mangá ruim. Acredito que o grande problema da personagem é a falta de veracidade que ela possui, pois assim como Shouta, ela se apaixona por ele em poucos dias, e o amor dela vem justamente desse sentimento de admiração, misturado um ímpeto sexual por menores de idade, e é a partir dai que o mangá tenta desenvolver o romance desses dois personagens, mas o grande problema aqui é que o principal tema do mangá, que é o romance entre esses dois personagens é muito mal desenvolvido, tudo acontece de uma maneira muito rápida, não temos nem tempo de simpatizar com aqueles personagens, tão pouco nos importar com a relação deles, o que caracteriza um romance mal feito, então o mangá se prende com todas as forças na maior “qualidade” dele, que é o Ecchi.

Uma leitura lenta e cansativa.
A leitura desse mangá é algo muito cansativo, pois existem diversos erros na construção das páginas, como o excesso de balões de diálogos, o enquadramento confuso e sem um senso de continuidade, fora diversos outros pontos que fazem a experiencia de ler esse mangá realmente ruim. O único ponto positivo que posso destacar da qualidade técnica desse mangá, é a arte do Amazume, que é aceitável, ele até consegue trabalhar bem com a profundidade de campo das cenas, com a anatomia dos personagens, e ainda tem o fato do mangá ser inteiramente colorido, o que torna o mangá visualmente agradável.

Por que, Japão?
Resumindo, Puppy Lovers é somente ruim, o autor não soube construir um romance minimamente crível, narrativamente falando, tão pouco conseguiu apresentar bons personagens, com motivações mais profundas, dentre outras coisas. Ainda tem o fato da relação de uma mulher de 20 anos com um garoto de 13 ser moralmente questionável, mas eu sei que não sou o publico alvo desse tipo de obra, porém isso não tira o fato dela ser objetivamente ruim.

Dialogues without function
This manga has a serious problem in the construction of its dialogues, problems that go beyond the narrative, because there is a lot of visual pollution on the pages, like long dialogues within a single balloon, and every damn page has too many dialogue balloons, this is because I haven't talked about the positioning of the balloons and the reading pace of the manga, which sucks.
The dialogues in this manga are presented solely to build up a sexually arousing scene, or to emphasize all the time how "impotent" the main character, Inui, is in the face of Souta's talent, something I will address more calmly throughout this review. In general, the dialogues seem very unnatural to me, I don't really feel that these characters feel anything for each other when analyzing their conversations, so it's really all about sex.

A dysfunctional relationship

Inui's character narratively experiences an interesting conflict, while she admires Shouta for his incredible talent, she also feels bad that she doesn't have as much willpower or talent as Shouta, and throughout the manga this is presented in a very underdeveloped way, with expository dialogues, very clichéd scenes, and everything you might expect from a bad manga. I think the big problem with the character is the lack of truthfulness she possesses, because just like Shouta, she falls in love with him in a few days, and her love comes exactly from this feeling of admiration, mixed with an underage sexual desire, and it is from there that the manga tries to develop the romance of these two characters, but the big problem here is that the main theme of the manga, which is the romance between these two characters, is very poorly developed, everything happens very quickly, we don't even have time to sympathize with these characters, nor do we care about their relationship, which characterizes a poorly done romance, so the manga clings to its greatest "quality", which is Ecchi.

A slow and tiring read.
The reading of this manga is very tiring, because there are several mistakes in the construction of the pages, such as the excess of dialogue balloons, the confusing framing and no sense of continuity, among several other points that make the reading experience of this manga very bad. The only positive point I can highlight from the technical quality of this manga, is Amazume's art, which is acceptable, he manages to work well with the depth of field of the scenes, with the anatomy of the characters, and there is also the fact that the manga is entirely in color, which makes it visually pleasing.

Why Japan?
In short, Puppy Lovers is just bad, the author didn't know how to build a minimally believable novel, narratively speaking, nor did he manage to present good characters with deeper motivations, among other things. There's also the fact that the relationship between a 20-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy is morally questionable, but I know I'm not the target audience for this kind of manga, but this doesn't take away from the fact that it's objectively bad.
