Hahahaa, umm, I didn't expect this to ever get spotlighted..Oh well.
Art - As with any CLAMP manga, the art is beautiful and dramatic with clean lines and great contrasts. I love their very subtle change in Seishirou's appearance when he takes off his glasses..he gets a little more angular which makes him quite evil. CLAMP seemed to have a lot of fun creating the different clothes the twins wore and I quite like Subaru's regular outfit.
Characters - Ahhh the characters...seemingly shallow but SO full of depth! Subaru, a boy of 17, had been burdened responsibilities as the head of the Sumeragi clan and a trained powerful onmyouji. Even though he often sees terrible situations, he remains an innocent, devoted, cheerful person, much to the support of his twin Hokuto, who is his opposite, very outgoing and eccentric to Subaru's shyness and reserved attitude. The twins make a great example of yin and yang. Seishirou is a hilarious character whose antics to embarrass Subaru greatly amuse both Hokuto. His ability to lie so perfectly in his cover up is amazing, although expected, since he was trained to do so. I love his true love THAT DOES EXIST for Subaru and how he still tortures the hell out of the poor kid. <3
Story - The manga is very episodic, with Subaru dealing with different "missions," but the part that stands out the most is the flashbacks to when Subaru was a child and he met Seishirou for the first time. The manga, in my opinion, was literally a setup for the final chapter where Seishirou finally confronts Subaru with the result of the bet. So many hints are dropped throughout the chapters and it really builds up tension to see what the bet was about and what will happen to these two in the very end. Also (even though we all know this isn't true! :P), I love how it was written that Subaru LOST the best and Seishirou didn't love him after all. I just adore fucked up endings where everything goes wrong.
Enjoyment - Honestly, what solidified my love for this manga was really the last chapter. It made me cringe. It made me cry. I felt so incredibly sorry for Subaru; there was a ball in my chest that wouldn't unravel. At the same time I couldn't hate Seishirou though, because I knew in his heart he really loves Subaru and that he was trying to deny his own feelings. Blah blah blah the end I can't write any more. |
