I Am a Hero is now up for vote. Decide whether it survives the zombie apocalypse in Enlightenment or if it will hobble slowly, unable to find tasty brains in the Relations list for eternity.
RULES:
1. You can only vote for a title if you've finished watching/reading it. You must’ve read or watched at least 60% of the published content for unfinished titles. There might be exceptions for very long finished titles – they are decided on a case by case basis, but usually amount to more than half of the published content.
2. Write your vote at the very top of your comment.
3. Below your vote, give a substantial explanation to back it up. It doesn't have to be lengthy; it just needs to cover the points you want to make.
4. If you have only read/watched the adaption/source material of the respective nominee, please state so in your post.
5. It will take a minimum of 5 votes for either Enlightenment or Relations to make it into any of the lists as an anime (3 votes for manga). If it fails to reach that, it will be deemed Unremarkable.
6. The votes for Enlightenment will have to outnumber the votes for Unremarkable and Relations for it to be included in our list; the same goes for Relations. If it fails to reach that, it will be deemed Unremarkable.
7. Behave yourself. We accept discussions and debate, not flaming and incoherent fanboy/fangirl behavior.
8. The fate of the poll will lie in the hands of the officers if it turns out that there are more first time voters than regulars or the series cannot be gauged by both voting and discussions.
This polling process will last 7 days. You better start killin' some zombies. Anyone caught misbehaving will be made fun of on Japanese anonymous forums while they're eaten alive.
Okay, now I'm back, it's time to save the day. Time to be a hero..
It is too unremarkable to be on on either of our lists.
This manga starts out really, really smart imo. At first, we had a somewhat childish MC with delusional vision that seems to has some kind of fictional reality of his own apart from his real life. Then, the zombie outbreak come. The outbreak itself is quite unconventional, it starts out really slow and barely noticed, unlike most zombie fiction that usually show the spread is fast like a wildfire. And it works. The MC slowly put into this deranged life where zombie pops out one after another, and since it is slow, we can see how the MC adapting, changing, accepting the reality that is much stranger than his early life. and once again, slowly, his vision started to disappear.. But not his fictional world where he strive to be a hero. Quite brilliant imho.
Now to the problem. Some of the outbreak is really... strange?
Take an example on the outbreak at the temple. There are some infected babies that can climb trees, their veins show up, jump to their prey like motherfuckin scary hyenas, MY GOD, they are fucking scary, much much scarier than the adult zombie.... and yeah, they started to bit people. Now what I find a problem is the people's reaction. They are really, really relaxed, and at first was like :"oh some baby climb trees.. where's their mothers? Can't they take care of their children???" okay, the context are most of the people don't have any idea what's going on, but really? baby climbing trees?
I don't know if it's a commentary by the author that japanese never find anything stranges or whatnot, but to be fine when seeing that is logically strange... isn't it?
Another problem is the recent chapters. After a somewhat brilliant introduction part, this manga started to get really flat. The slow pace turns out to be a hindrance in the long run. It also seems to lost its focus. From a slow, personal view on surviving the zombie apocalypse, it somehow turns into some kind of campaign war where a super kid wearing only underwear is a secret weapon.
But to be fair, from what I read this manga looks like has a long way to go, a lot of things to revealed, a lot of mysteries to unveiled. I will say unremarkable up to what I read (130 chaps) for now, but it still can change to enlightening once the series finished dep
ending on how it turns out.
