----------------------------------------

Do automata have hearts and consciousness, odd to compare it to human brains and such, such a profound question. It was a nice and touching friendship story.

Loved all the classic science fiction references. Any show that will shout out to the likes of Asimov, Dick, and Bradbury deserves our respect, So sad with the whole byplay between analyzer and the android...

Finally had some time to watch this episode!
Probably my favorite one so far? hehe Besides all the great references, all the emotions between Analyzer and the 'Garmiroid'... I felt that this episode was a great step for the audience to realize what's going to happen in the end...

(thoughts on the ending of the series?)

I admit it was hard to hold my tears especially towards the end of this episode. It was sad. I love robots and seeing Alter acting and thinking almost like a human, made me agonized.

I was excited to see Yamato security on the move for the 1st time, seeing Itou and Touru working together. Yet I didn't want them to destroy or rather to murder Alter. The conversation between Sanada and Shinya blew my mind away. The fact that how a human brain functions remains a mystery till this day. Also I assume Shinya he has a heart, but a heart of a sadist that's why he could be cruel sometimes. I like that about him ♥

I loved all the explicit references to the sci-fi greats. This series remembers love for them as well being a remake of the original Yamato series.

The security chief is a nasty SOB. I like that not everyone on the Yamato is a nice guy, it has to reflect what humans are like as a whole.

Great episode. The 4th anime I've seen that explored the idea of automatons having a conscious the other 3 being Ergo Proxy, Eve no Jikan, and Space Dandy (to an extent).

Decent episode, the radio part was a nice touch.
But to be fair, the entire mess came from a flawed premiss. Nobody in his right mind leaves an activated enemy warfare system alone and unchecked...

Ah, what an awesome show this is turning out to be. Just the right amount of emotions here and there; with 'exposition' that runs along the main arc as a second arc whilst complementing the central plot. Not overly drawn out and tedious like some of the prior work that influenced this show. Rarely for my tastes has spiritual mumble jumble paired well with sci-fi, I'm glad that Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 has decided to stick to space opera scifi and do it damn well in the process.

The next episode is very similar to the conundrums present in the ginga tetsudou 999. From the preview, it's clear that's gonna one action packed rollercoaster and not a copout to milk out a franchise.

Although there are more instances of Sci-Fi series that ponder whether AI are human/like human or not than I've had hot breakfasts, this one managed to tug at my heartstrings. To be picky, however:
1) They should have at least tried to reason with it.

Great episode that ranges in a context that I would never have thought to see in this work, in which the leitmotif seems to be always or almost, the lacerating battle between terrestrials and aliens. The final part in which the alien android ceases to live is a heartbreaking, a scene that is truly full of pathos and that definitely wants to give us a message like this: mutual knowledge enriches us. The story told in the background is fleeting, making it even easier to understand the "feelings" of the alien android. arrazione that sweeps in every field, the other time there was talk of ghosts, now a presence that permeates the whole ship.

weird episode. Felt a bit forced as in "we are space anime must have conscious toasters"

But apparently a chick or the ghost of a chick is in the navi?

Beautiful soundtrack and touching relationship between robots. I almost cried! Although I agree that leaving an AI unchecked was...not smart. Also, how did they not notice Alter connecting to the ship (that moment when he found out about the goddess)? But uh, whatever, the episode's greatness is more important. I'm only sad that I didn't get the sci-fi references, I'm not really knowledgeable about the genre :-[

So I guess the takeaway is some standard idea about robots having consciousness and emotions and, more importantly, a hint that the ship has some girl as an AI inside. Probably this girl is an Iskandarian and has a connection to Yuki? I also wonder why did the kernel of the Alter looked a bit like the thing the Iscandarians delivired in the 1st episode.

Great episode again, rarely see AI given this good development, the line about getting formatted and it hesitated and said 'That is... the right decision' really hit home, great stuff.

This. The way everyone is reading this episode makes it really cliche. It's not profound at all. The questions and discussions it raises is scifi 101.

The nuance that I see is that the story is really more about the red robot than it is about Alter. It didn't have any self consciousness before he met someone else like him and meeting Alter caused it to question whether or not it itself had a heart.

However it does seem really out of place in the series so far. Judging from a previous comment and the repeated cards/shogi motif that was linked to communicating with the aliens, this episode might be speaking to greater themes about alien communication and understanding them.

As a fan of the original Space Battleship Yamato I am increasingly blown away by this remake. It does SO much right, that it becomes very easy to overlook the occasional rare misstep.

This was a phenomenal episode that adds something new to the story of the Yamato while remaining very true to the spirit of the original series. I always loved Analyzer, even when he was just a cute, pervy background character. The remake really goes to great lengths to emphasize Analyzer's humanity, and his interplay with Alter here has made this probably my favorite episode in the series so far. A really touching story that's filled with references to the likes of Philip K. Dick and Isaac Aasimov. It works as a tribute to these authors' works, while still being very distinctly Space Battleship Yamato, and not feeling out of place and this anime's canon at all.

Bonus points for Sanada's silent character development: one of his early lines has him threatening to reboot Analyzer without batting an eye, effectively wiping our lil robot's identity. By the end of the episode, thanks to Alter and Analyzer, he is a changed man, who questions whether a being's biological nature is either a prerequisite or a guarantee for having a heart and soul.

RIP, Alter. ;-;

Meh, worst episode so far. As a computer science major, these stories that try to show sentient robots will never work on me, the whole concept is stupid, AI works on data used for training at the end of the day it cannot have true feelings.
