Spotlight Character: Brandon Heat (Gungrave)

MAL Character Information Page: Brandon "Beyond the Grave" Heat

MAL Favorites: 895

For the next week I would like to have everyone familiar with this character discuss what they think makes it an exceptional character. What attributes make it stand out in the ocean of interesting characters that exist in the realms of anime and manga.

Unlike the other two subjects I will not force this conversation to fall into any set structure. Characters that are nominated typically get here because they are adept at breaking the existing character moulds and defying definition.

Because of this freedom I encourage everyone to do their very best to stay on topic and keep any and all debate civil. Have fun and I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say about this character.

I have a lot of emotional attachment to this anime, and not because of the incident with industrial strength zombies that I was somehow wrapped up in, but rather the fact that the anime itself, Gungrave, was designed to make you feel that humans, one way or the other, were really bad. Why, do you ask, do I feel that way? Perhaps it's because of this character, Brandon Heat.

The anime as a whole was a enjoyable, but the main point of it was to highlight the interactions between people, people who throw themselves into other worlds and hope that by toppling the bricks, they'll land on top. Kindergarten physics meets sociological experimentation. Let's watch the fun.

Brandon Heat, in my opinion, is meant to encapsulate all of the feelings, the inner wars, the love and eventually, the loss of love and life, two things humans cherish above all. Maybe I'm just a noob, but it seems to me that this kind of thing doesn't happen very often. Sure, the events of Gungrave and how they affect Brandon Heat are unique to the anime, and even the genre. Still, I haven't seen this kind of thing done before anywhere, or at least in quite the same way. Extending that, characters, like anime and manga, can be ranked. Brandon Heat, in the same way that he is throughout the anime, is aloof and beyond that ranking. Itou Makoto can bite the dust at the bottom of the ladder, but Brandon Heat stands high, and off to the left, in the darkness. Beyond the Rankings.
