The Tower Group: Tragic Past / Horrible Experience/Drastic personality change Proof: Before Sanzo was bestowed his present title, he was known as Kouryuu, the river orphan. He was found by his mentor Koumyou Sanzo when he was just a baby, abandoned to float downstream. Koumyou raised and taught him, and was held by Kouryuu in high regard. Shortly after Kouryuu was named as Koumyou's successor, Koumyou was killed while protecting Kouryuu from demons that were raiding their temple looking for the holy scriptures. They succeeded in stealing the Seiten Scripture that Koumyou bore, but left behind the Maten Scripture. The young Genjo Sanzo subsequently went on a search to recover his master's stolen scripture, but was unsuccessful. Several years later, he came under the employ of the Three Aspects in order for them to help him in his task. Although he remembers his master fondly, Sanzo is often haunted by the memory of Koumyou's death. He despises the rain due to the fact that it poured down on the night of his master's death, and often broods whenever it falls from the sky, usually refusing to go out into it. Despite the fact that Sanzo's abilities are undeniable, he often feels as though he is unworthy of the title that his master bestowed upon him, but yet strives to become strong enough to one day see himself as deserving of it. The Tower Group: Drastic personality change // Tragic Past / Horrible Experience Proof: Mei possesses a very quiet and solitary personality at first, telling Kouichi to stay away from her, but as time goes on, she becomes accustomed to his presence and doesn't seem to mind having him around. She also tells him to be careful, since 'it' (the curse) may have started already, indicating concern. More than thirty years ago, Mei's "mother", Yukiyo, was born with her twin, named Mitsuyo. They both became married and her twin sister was soon pregnant with twins. These twins are Mei and Misaki. Kirika also became pregnant, but she lost her pregnancy, leaving her devastated. At that time, the Fujioka family was experiencing financial problems. Because of this and the fact that Kirika was still trying to cope with the loss, Mei was given to her. Mei says that Kirika might have wanted to keep this a secret forever, but her grandmother accidently let it slip. In the manga, Mei as a child caught her "mother" crying, asking "Why?". Yukiyo was also paranoid and bought Mei a cellphone to be sure that she doesn't meet her real mother, Mitsuyo or her sister Misaki. Mei secretly met with Misaki anyway, and they became close friends.
