Spotlight Anime: Last Exile

MAL Anime Information Page: Last Exile

MAL Score – 8.06 (by 19597 users)
Ranked - #360
Popularity - #171

For the next week I would like to have a discussion about the anime that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate an anime: Animation, Sound, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment.

I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this:

Animation - insert rating
Sound - insert rating
Characters - insert rating
Story - insert rating
Enjoyment - insert rating

Animation - discuss any pros and cons of the animation styling used in the series, try to include some specifics.

Sound - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to the music and sound effects used in the series

etc...

If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 5 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions.

After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to watching this discussion unfold.

Granted it wasn't a perfect series, I still think Last Exile deserves a place in the club.

For instance, I think that Last Exile is the perfect blend of creativity and good usages of tropes. The story and characters itself aren't original, though at least good, but the setting alone is simply fantastic. This is not a surprise since Range Murata was given complete freedom to create the setting. And also, it's perhaps the only good steam punk anime that actually makes usage of its steam punk environment. No, not even Miyazaki could do that.

Industry needs more stuff like that. Almost every anime that is related to fantasy these days is just plainly constipated.

Most certainly, but, as much as I love me some world building, I don't know if it deserves a place just for that. I really can't say the story was all that great, it served its purpose in letting the setting shine, but it just didn't seem to flow to well. Main reason for that, I'd say, would be that the characters didn't stand out enough, or, rather, the protagonist didn't. Claus was one hell of a boring character, didn't seem to be much more than the typical hot-headed boy, making it all the more annoying when he attracts so much screen time.

I do agree with this though. It was certainly different, and being an anime first makes it all the more ambitious and impressive. That's almost enough for me to give it a 'yes', but I'm not sure.

I'm going to have to attack a major plot point here- Alvis. Yeah sure, she's relevant to the plot because she's the guardian of Mysteria or whatever, but why is she the guardian, exactly? After the last episode a lot was still vague to me, though I got most of my questions answered- but this one still endlessly bugs me.

If Wikipedia is to be trusted,
Wikipedia said:
It is never revealed how Alvis came to be the guardian of the Mysteria and the one who can activate Exile.

Now, she's a main character in which a large part of the series clearly hinges upon... and yet absolutely nothing about her is explained. Is this acceptable? If you start asking what the Mysteria really are, and where they come from, the only answer you get is "Because Alvis".
Not only is the plot built around this concept, but it also seems as if it were used as a cheap way to get a cute little girl central to the story. I didn't feel that Last Exile needed that in the first place, and the fact that the plot surrounding her makes no sense doesn't help at all.

While that may not bother some of you as much as it does for me, that alone resolutely makes me vote 'no' on this anime. The setting is indeed grand, but the plot and characters are certainly nowhere near induction level.
