Culture Time Feature Story

If you got the chance to read this article that was introduced to me by my friend Dante, what are your thoughts on it???? Do you think its starting to effect Western culture here in America? Do you think this is caused by the technology of video games and the web becoming a social past time instead of face to face interaction?

For some reason a person in my neighbourhood has become a hikikomori. However, that's just one person I know of.

I think the hikikomori in Japan are born from popularity. Young boys that get bullied a lot (boys tend to bully one specific person often) hear of a way of not being bullied anymore. They only look at the benefits (doing whatever you want all day, no work, parents take care of you).

I think this is related to the digital age, but not video games. Hikikomori still desire some form of social interaction, but in the form of chatrooms etc. Some games like World of Warcraft feature these social interactions across the internet, and are therefore favored as a pastime for a hikikomori.

Games aren't the cause of hikikomoris, the internet is. The reason why it probably isn't done in the Western countries is because parents over here would drag them out of their rooms. Perhaps parents are too 'soft' in Japan?
