Metropolis // メトロポリス (2001) Directed By: Rintaro Originally Created By: Osamu Tezuka Rated: PG 13 Duration: 1hr 49min Producers: Madhouse Studios, Kadokawa Shoten Genres: Adventure, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Police Plot Summary: Kenichi and his detective uncle, Shunsaku Ban, leave Japan to visit Metropolis, in search of the criminal, Dr. Laughton. However, when they finally find Dr. Laughton, Kenichi and Shunsaku find themselves seperated and plunged into the middle of a larger conspiracy. While Shunsaku searches for his nephew and explanations, Kenichi tries to protect Tima (a mysterious young girl), from Duke Red and his adopted son Rock, both of whom have very different reasons for wanting to find her. (from ANN) It is a 2001 anime film and loosely based on the 1949 Metropolis manga created by the late Osamu Tezuka, itself inspired by the 1927 German silent film of the same name, though the two do not share plot elements. The anime, however, does draw aspects of its storyline directly from the 1927 film. The anime had an all-star production team, including renowned anime director Rintaro, Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo as script writer, and animation by Madhouse Studios with conceptual support from Tezuka Productions. In the United States, the anime was given a PG-13 rating by the MPAA for "violence and images of destruction" and TV-14-LV rating when it aired on Adult Swim. (from wikipedia) Screencaps: |

Vampire Hunter D(吸血鬼ハンターD) Vampire Hunter D (吸血鬼ハンターD Kyūketsuki hantā D) - one of the first anime films released outside of Japan, remains a cult classic in the English-speaking world. Billed by the Japanese producers as a "dark future science-fiction romance", Vampire Hunter D is set in the year 12,090 AD, in a post-nuclear holocaust world where a vampiric Nobility terrorizes human peasants. Anyone who hasn't seen both the first film and the second, "Bloodlust" is sadly missing out. One of my all time favorite anime films and sealed with PCM's approval! Discussion Here & don't forget to collect your Special Edition Vampire Hunter D card! (click card to go to thread) |

Aired: Feb 28, 1998 Producers: Madhouse Studios Genres: Drama, Horror, Psychological Duration: 1 hr. 20 min. Rating: R+ - Mild Nudity Director: Satoshi Kon <3 Perfect Blue is an excellent psychological thriller from the late master Kon, Satoshi. It is in the vein of an Alfred Hitchcock story, having many classical horror elements within it. However, the lines between imagination and reality slowly start to blur until the main character (and the viewer) have trouble distinguishing between the two. It was Kon's first full length film. It's quite dark in its themes, and it's suspense is great. Definitely starts off slow, but don't let it lose you. It's very worth the while. |

Synonyms: Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko Released: Jun 13, 1994 Rating: PG Director: Takahata, Isao Genres: fantasy, comedy, drama, supernatural Pom Poko is a Japanese animated film, the eighth written and directed by Isao Takahata and animated by Studio Ghibli. Consistent with Japanese folklore, the tanuki are portrayed as a highly sociable, mischievous species, able to use "illusion science" to transform into almost anything, but too fun-loving and too fond of tasty treats to be a real threat – unlike the kitsune and other shapeshifters. Prominent testicles are an integral part of tanuki folklore, and they are shown and referred to throughout the film, and also used frequently in their shapeshifting. This remains unchanged in the DVD release, though the English dub (but not the subtitles) refers to them as "pouches". Also, in the English dub and subtitles, the animals are never referred to as "raccoon dogs", which is the more accurate English name for the tanuki, instead they are referred to rather incorrectly as just "raccoons". Plot Synopsis: (from ANN): Faced with the destruction of their habitat due to the growth of Tokyo, a group of tanuki try to defend their homes. They decide to use their transforming talents to try to hold back the new development. Two of them, especially skilled at transforming, are sent to Shikoku to enlist the help of three sages. Meanwhile, the rest of them do their best to disrupt the construction site, at first causing accidents, and then actually haunting the site. However, the humans are very persistent, and soon the tanuki are forced to use more and more extreme measures to save their home. |

Takashi Shimura portrays Kanji Watanabe, an aging bureaucrat with stomach cancer forced to strip the veneer off his existence and find meaning in his final days. Told in two parts, Ikiru offers Watanabe’s quest in the present, and then through a series of flashbacks.
