Do you think anime has ever negatively impacted someone's life?

We only hear about the good sides of discovering this medium ect but what about the bad? Like anime addiction? And before you say "It is just fiction, it doesn't affect me" You are wrong! The internet and social media are just digital data on a square screen but it does affect all our lives!

EDIT;
I thought of a better example.

Imagine of someone who has never known highschool love; he discovers anime, and watches a dozen romcoms and he begins to long for love, for things past his time... only to realize he will never have that; and they become depressed.

In this case anime literally gave this hypothetical person a real life mental condition!

obsession aka otaku and addiction is a mental disorder anyway but how many are really clinically diagnose by this? its rare and most of the time there is already an underlying mental health problem of the victim or consumer

this is like the right wingers complain about porn making rapists or video games makes people violent but the overwhelming statistics does not show that for decades now

There's an otaku in Back Street Girls who went bat sh*t crazy when his mom shrew away his anime/idol stuff.
Reminded me of a news I read in an English translated site with a similar story. So I bet anime has impacted someones life negatively.
Today, I may be a weak little bug that gets tossed in the wind,
washed away by the currents, and drowns, but tomorrow,
I may become the butterfly that spreads its colossal wings and flies the open skies!

@deg It is not considered and official addiction yet, but with game addiction, and soon to be porn addiction, it might become one. And need I remind you, there were cases where kids killed themselves over their favorite character dying!

I don't think anime itself is usually the primary cause of negative impacts on someone's life. They probably have pre-existing mental disorders, coping mechanisms, or engage in escapism, etc. There are definitely some underlying issues before anime is even considered the problem.

@tappioca again most of the time this rare cases of mentally sick people already have some mental problems to begin with, anime or any entertainment they set their minds on is just the trigger

Anything could have impacted someone's life negatively.

I'm sure there are people who have died by choking on water.

so yes, anime is no exception to this. there are infinite possible contexts where anime could be good, bad and anything in-between.

sure it has, but food can also very negatively effect someone... If someone has underlying problems and they solve it by over consumption of something I don't think anime is all that bad

If you introduce anime to a sane individual it wouldn't effect them negatively

Probably the Porygon episode from Pokemon...since it cause seizers... Seriously though I'm sure any media could negatively impact someone mentally but probably because of outlying issues in their life and not directly associated to the media they are consuming.

And then there was the "Endless Eight"...I'm sure that hurt more than a few people mentally...

A mere cartoon doesn't affect me negatively at all fortunately.

But there were some cases when someone fell in love with a Japanese cartoon character so much that they ended up marrying those cartoon characters, like some Korean guy who married Fate Testarossa from Nanoha series because he was so obsessed with her, he even took a pillow with her pic and went to restaurant and amusement park with that pillow.

Depends what you mean by negative. Obsessing over waifus and becoming an otaku is seen as negative to a lot of people, however the actual person with the obsession is happy.

I think anything can have negative impacts if you become addicted to it.

Anything can have negative (as well as positive) effects. While everyone indulges in escapism, doing so to excess can cause issues. And at times, it can no longer serve as a distraction, and emptiness can crawl in.

On another note: To be fair, watching Evangelion when I was in junior high probably didn't help my already tenuous mental health. Lol.

I mean if someone gets addicted to anime and isn't doing shit with their life like and is only watching anime then it can defiantly have a negative impact on someones life.

it all depends on the person. if they allow it to it will. on the other hand anime has the power to better someone's life to. it all depends on the person which direction they wanna go in

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

Yeah, it ruined an entire generation of men.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

i mean I didn’t need any help feeling this way during high school and that was well before I watched much anime let alone romcoms. I see this more as people having negatively impacted their own lives and using anime the same way any person with an unfulfilling life might use alcohol, books, or whatever gives them a dopamine rush to try and patch over their issues.
and i guess

that i just don't know

According to Andrew Dobson, anime ruined his life. Had nothing to do with his own actions, or anything. For some peak lolcow comedy I'd recommend watching this.

Anime as a medium is the same as every other media in that regard. People can choose to take inspiration from it or get depressed from it. But in the end, it's all just fiction and reality is, most often than not, very different.

If they look at lolicon/shotacon hentai or furry porn, then yes, it has negatively affected their life...
