I was looking back into the archives of The Anime News Network's Answerman and found this very fascinating write up about what fansub tapes were like back in the day. This is a really well written answer because "the answerman" was actually part of a fansub group.

I never had access to fansubs way back but it still fascinates me and I think it's awesome that so many fans put so much effort into subtitling anime even back when the equipment to do so was so expensive.

What are your memories of fansub groups and tapes? Do you still own them? What is your opinion on groups that continue to fansub an anime that has already been licensed, and/or the "flame wars" that apparently happened between many fansub groups across the internet?
