So you don't misunderstand I don't mean just overrated but artists like for example Sid Vicious who was so bad at bass he didn't even get to record on The Sex Pistols only album yet he became popular because of his attitude and contreversy rather than his musical merit.

Adele - powerful but "generic" voice. Too much credit for a smoking driven voice. She deserves fame, but not that much

Lana del rey - depressing music (not depressing as a theme, depressing from how dull and bad it sounds)

Lorde - downright shitty.

One direction - generic boy band with just mildy catchy songs, but heavily hindered by terrible lack of vocabulary.

sex pistols are dope lol. but fuck sid vicious.

for me it's genericity. as mentioned, adele, but also the swarm of bombay bicycle club type bands in the 2010s, coldplay, 21 pilots, the 1975, 5sos and that other band that's exactly like 5sos(help me out here?)

of these tho the only ones i think are actually bad are 5sos and 21 pilots. the others are just uninteresting. they pander to peoples' tastes and are totally unexperimental and have no interesting motifs, sounds, etc, but not every musician has to be interesting. i'll just stay listening to what i like.

I don't really think in terms of being overrated or not. If an artist is popular, he deserves it whether I like it or not. They have something that others don't have. That can be talent, attitude or just one good song written by someone in the shadows.

Waqs aka DJ Sailor Moon aka Loser Russian dude lol

He's obscure but has a decent (and dedicated) following but his music is crap. He steals breaks from other artists, takes unedited break loops, then runs them through a VST, then calls himself a breakcore artist.

Like just listen to this example
http://www.whosampled.com/sample/364794/DJ-Sailor-Moon-I-Would-Like-to-Die-at-Birth-Himeko-Katagiri-Teach-Lolis-About-Hentai/

Only reason he has a following is people's complete ignorance on how his music is made

I'll say that I can see why his early stuff is praised. He was in the exact right place at the right time, but I don't think you can argue in favor of him from a musical standpoint. It's the most inadequate, sloppy, tuneless music to ever get even close to that widely acclaimed.

Honestly most modern music is overrated because they only consist of basic chords and repetitive lyrics, however this is mostly only what you hear on the radio. There is plenty of good music today you just have to work to find it. But yes most radio music nowadays drives me crazy.

Music in general is predictable.

Modern music boils down to the same topics no matter the genre:
- Fame, self success
- Feelings for another person
- Current trends in society

Depending on the artist and the platform they choose to deliver the message to the audience (whether it be EDM, Rock, Pop, etc), will determine their popularity.

Skrillex is smart enough to evolve with the times. Compare his change in music from his aggressive dubstep a couple of years ago (Nice Sprites and Scary Monsters), to what he's doing now (Jack Ü, Justin Bieber, etc). He knows exactly who his target audience is and adjusted his music accordingly. Multiple artists fail to remain relevant because they refuse to develop their music.

Haha what? The whole point of musical entertainment (at least in popular music) is performance. Why should a great performer be punished for not being able to compose?

Hey_Mike said:

Musical development has nothing to do with relevancy.

I think you should rephrase your sentence to "multiple artists have failed to remain relevant because they either refused or couldn't adhere to the changes in cultural trends."

You couldn't be more wrong. Bob Dylan is one of the greatest song writers of all time hence so many big artists covering many of his songs - to add to that, he's also one of the most consistent artists of the past 50 years.

I don't see what is supposed to be good about his actual music.

Modern pop isn't particularly tuneful either. Sure, they sing in key, usually, but it's often hookless mush with a rap section thrown in.

what modern pop doesn't have hooks? hell, what modern rap doesn't have hooks...?
in any case if you don't see what's good about his music that's fine. for me it's primarily his lyrics and singing - on a technical level his delivery is way more interesting than most music of his time on songs like subterranean homesick blues. his lyrics are thematically interesting and elegant and evocative. but i also like his arrangements and think a lot of music is pretty tuneful... just like a woman for example

Of course the songs will have what are supposed to be hooks, but they aren't catchy or memorable. There are exceptions, but even then a decent hook doesn't make a good song. Modern rap? No, it plainly is not memorable, for the most part. The most hooky of it is stuff like Kanye West's MBDTF, because it's basically pop.
