Ok I've watched the series but I still haven't managed to understand what the word deculture that is said numerous times throughout the series is supposed to mean... I don't think the use it to actually say "to de-culture"... but if not then what...
Any ideas?

I thought 'deculture' was a curse word for the aliens? Like when they're disgusted with something, they say 'deculture!'

Foggy memory on this topic though.
"I'm starting to think mal is run by Xinil generating electricity on a bicycle." - idklol

It would seem that some of the Zentradi use it as a curse word, Britai for instance, but its used in completely irrelevant situations too... like in the title of many songs, or of the pilot episode, but also in the series, see for instance the theme song of Nyan-Nyan, Ranka sings it to Alto in the first ep and it goes like this "nyan nyan nyan nyan nihao nyan, gorgeous, delicious, deculture"...

Are you an idiot or what? Deculture may express shock, disgust or even awe.
It's just that simple.

Maybe it's a way in the FUTURE, to say that something's cute? Or fuckin' awesome?

Wasn't that simply word for cultural shock ? :P (coming from the SDF Macross)

It is believed that humans and Zenthradi's ancestors used have culture as first in universe (>Protoculture). but they divided and started wars and destroyed themselves.
In process they created Zenthradi who were pure hardened giant soldiers ripped of any cultural aspect (no music, no entertainment, no male+female contact, no fun, nothing ).

Those giant soldiers they time to time encountered culture and that "contaminated" some of them but never all of them. those who stayed without culture thought that culture is bad coz in their eyes it ruined every fleet that came into contact with it. So they came up with "DeCulture !! " which meant cultural shock in negative way, over the years it became more of positive word mostly for entertainment (usually good songs but also smoking, kissing, etc..)

Deculture - (De-kerlchuun)[25] This is a one word description of the entire merged human/zentradi/meltrandi civilization/culture. The Zentradi expression is used extensively in the series. It is specially used when referring to certain musical themes that connect with people in large numbers. Most of the time is said by Zentradi as an expression of disbelief, amusement, awe, surprise or disgust.

From what I understand, in the Macross universe "Culture" means understanding only your culture, it is a divider, it makes people separate.

Deculture, means forget your own culture, and learn to accept people not for what culture they are from, but from the fact that you share your own culture that you build with another species.

It is a theme that is present toward the series, another good work about interspecies relations are present in the Ender's Games Quintology.
