A video catched my eye while i was randomly going through youtube. This magical girl anime seems to be extremely violent yet extremely liked in japan. Villains are torn into pieces, girls nonchalantly punch, burn, shock them. Not even many shounen does that.

Also it is better animated than dragon ball.

Mod Note: Moved from general Anime Discussion.

I don't know much about magical girl animes but this seemed shocking to me.

This is like dragon ball z for girls.

I think "extremely violent" is an overstatement
Can you show the clip where "Villains are torn into pieces, girls nonchalantly punch, burn, shock them."?

One it like most of the violence seems to be done in a someone lightly comical manner. (Haha, all the villains fell in the fountain together and seem to be fine).

Two this seems pretty on part with most shonen anime I've seen. (One Piece has actual blood for example).

Three much like people said maho shoujo can be pretty violent. (See Sailor Moon for example).

So, Pecure doesn't seem outside the normal for this type of show or age range.

This ^
+ almost every action anime that involves battles is violent. This is far from being 'extremely violent'. Just poorly animated IMO.

You do realise that you just said that Mahou Shoujo are "Action Boys" for girls, don't you?

Not all Precure seasons are the same. The third season, Splash Star, considerably toned down its violent content after complains of the first two seasons (particularly Max Heart)

Heartcatch is the one people know best for having shounen-esque fight scenes and I remember being kinda disappointed that some of the other seasons don't have that.

It's nearly as violent as it could be. No bloodshed as mentioned before, no severed limbs, no torture scenes, no charred nun corpses, no little girls getting melted, strangled or both at the same time.

Of course not. I am not comparing this to shingeki no kyojin. As i said before i do not know mahou shojo so i was surprised to all these fist fights, huge attack beams. When i hear anime about little magical girls i was not expecting this kinda thing.

It is probably just my prejudice.

The first fights and huge beams are Precure staples yes, but everything else (except maybe the severed limbs thing) I was directly referencing Sailor Moon. The manga of that can be pretty messed up.

But aside from first fights Precure is pretty squeaky clean compared to a lot of the genre. The girls are always perfect angels who almost never do things like sneak out past curfew or lie to their parents. They never explore subjects like sexuality, divorce of suicide.

The show's targeted toward kindergarten-age girls specifically so I wouldn't really expect that.

Precure is barely violent, only Heartcatch and Go Princess even have permadeath and even then Jewelpet has more death than Precure (unless you are watching Happiness or Magical Change), Gundam is more violent than Precure even the ones that are kiddy.

If you think some of earlier seasons are too violent, watch Doki Doki. Almost all the fight scenes are just repeated animation of the same magic attacks. There's, like, almost no fisticuffs in the entire series.

Although the movie does have one oddly violent scene where Mana gets bitten on the neck by a wolf creature and starts bleeding profusely. But as far as I know, that's the only time blood has appeared prominently in a Precure fight scene.

For some reason i found little girls pummeling a guy with their fists and colorful death beams amusing. She punches him in the guts in 3.18 . And they end it with a huge crushing punch. They are more hardcore than shonen heroes.

I wouldn't say it is "extremely" violent. But Precure series can have a lot of physical fighting as far as mahou shoujo shows go.

And how many other mahou shoujo series have physical combat as their main way of fighting?

I wouldn't say it is "extremely" violent. But Precure series can have a lot of physical fighting as far as mahou shoujo shows go. Heart Catch wasn't like the previous season or the future ones. It was more mature in terms of plot and character (despite the leading cures being children with saturday morning motif) the show's most dark cocept is death and the big reveal.

This show stood out from being just another magical girl anime, but more different and much fantastac!
