No, it already had a big fanbase to begin with. Season 2 sales have dropped from season 1, so it has in fact lost quite a bit of its buying fanbase.

Does it occur to anybody that a fictional 2D idol group headed by mainly newcomers is pretty much keeping pace with a new Nana Mizuki single and that their singles cost almost twice as much too (2,200 yen vs. 1,234), someone who was previously considered to be untouchable in the seiyuu/singer world. u's could at this juncture be argued to be as or more popular than Nana Mizuki. Think about that for a second.

Let me put this in perspective as I see it. Most anime singles top out at about 5,000 copies. Love Lives average about 60,000+ though some have crossed the 100,000 mark and gone platinum. At the asking price that means a pretty much guaranteed return of USD $1,112,515 if these current singles make that average which they probably will given the momentum. Now the average limited edition premium Blu-Ray costs something like 6,500 yen if you take into account the Amazon deals or roughly triple the price it costs to buy that Eien Friends single. This means that at Love Live's single sales average it's like they're selling 20,000 BD's pretty much every single time. 33,000 if you take into a account the several 100,000+ seller gold singles it has. That's pretty damn crazy on top of what the anime episode BD's already make for the franchise.

It's tough to readily compete against a fanbase that literally prostrates itself before images of the characters and I'm not trying to be disparaging here, that's pretty much just what's going on here. 2D images have that level of power and influence over people and it's not like we're talking totalitarian cults of personality here.

Idol culture is big in Japan. You do know how many copies AKB48 sells for each of their singles? Their new single "希望的リフレイン", which was released on Nov 26, sold 1,130,312 copies. Effective marketing is key for idol franchises, whether it is 2D, 2.5D (which is what u's is at the concerts, events, etc) or 3D.

For Love Live's case, they effectively market their discography through the Sukufesu mobile game. The occasional events and promotional work the seiyuu do, drive the concert disc sales. This is the phenomenon of 2.5D idols (half-way between 2D and 3D). Not to mention merchandise sales, book sales, etc, keeping interest in the franchise as a whole.

Its sales are way worse than they were in season 1.

Fantastic! All 3 selling incredibly well, yet to watch any of IS but reading the novels and they are great so could not be happier to see the anime sell. Unless that is that they mucked up the adaptation, I'll find out soon enough. Mahouka remaining steady in sales and after the fab news of seeing how much of a boost the LNs got it's a great week. Japan doing us proud again.

HOW TO SAVE ANIME IN THREE SIMPLE STEPS

  1. To have Mars of Destruction, Skelter Heaven, and Pupa properly adapted in TV series form by Madhouse
  2. To have Inferno Cop properly adapted in TV series form by Bones, director: Urobuchi Gen
  3. An anime crossover of Mushishi x ARIA x Haibane Renmei.

Should even one of the above conditions cannot be done, anime is still at risk.

From what I read it looks like Aniplex is shipping 30k copies on day 1 (doesn't mean 30k sales but they only planned for 10k to begin with so it's doing a lot better than expected).

Gochiusa also managed 10k series average, best selling CGDCT since K-ON.
Nozaki-kun is also on track for 10k, hope it manages.

As far as being faithful to the light novels, Season 1 of Infinite Stratos actually did. Season 2 however....

It also helps that it has like 4 different versions of the disc up on Amazon alone. They just added another one early today so now it's like 5 which has to be some sort of record. It's ridiculous how much they'll strip mine one entity for all potential profit like that. It's realistically probably going to sell much higher than 30K since again they've successfully managed to create a craze for a property with their marketing and use of popular names and are making sure to squeeze every last potential sale they can out of it with whatever kind of packaging they can throw on the market with a week to go to release, but also realistically I don't actually expect all that much out of it other than a hyped up blockbuster since even Japanese fans are saying that the script is nothing particularly noteworthy and this is their beloved Urobuchi we're talking about here so I'm even more inclined to believe it's the case.

Just a name alone will net them millions regardless of quality unlike Infinite Stratos World Purge which deserves the sales :)

Are you absolutely 100% certain it doesn't sell because it has lots of marketable girls with personalities, back stories and character arcs specifically designed to appeal to at least one major moe otaku fetish? Just examining it for a sec:

Houka - Japanese Yamato Nadeshiko Childhood Friend Waifu
Cecilia - Tsundere Ojou-Sama Waifu
Laura - Eyepatch Moe German Kuudere Waifu
Charlotte - Kana Hanazawa Cross Dresser Waifu
Lin - Genki Girl Waifu
Tatenashi - Student Council President Ace Waifu
Chifuyu - Onee-San Waifu

The recession in Japan guarantees there will be more as it's almost recession proof, that and idol anime/cds (as said in WUG).

Yep, along with selling the BDs on the theaters and shipping them only 1 month after release, then again, they have been working on this since 2009 or something crazy like that though, gotta make it worth it.

Didnt know their marketing in JP. Sounds like they did a good job. Won't blame them though, their songs were quite okay in the show and I definitely enjoyed the show itself.

Merchandise is selling out for that anime as well, just the Dakimakura of Angela alone sold out the day after it was announced for preorder.

Honestly for people not into that sort of stuff there's rarely ever interesting news when it comes to sales. You just sort of have to laugh it off for what it is and learn to take it more as just a study of markets and sub cultures which is how I made my peace with it all. It really just is what it is, greed and marketability to otaku and the right kind of branding and packaging of the product is what gets rewarded with high sales and figuring out the right formula or what some show did to achieve those sales and the discussions that happen from that are the actual interesting parts of these threads to me at least while the rest of it is just kind of cheer leading for the people that are into those sorts of things. Some people think you're being a hater if you choose to see it that way but oh well really.

Realistically unlike most people I see absolutely nothing worth celebrating when it comes to sales of anime cause it's not like I stand to lose or gain anything from it monetary or entertainment wise. Somehow despite rarely selling gangbusters a lot of shows I like tend to get sequels or followups anyway and it's not like I need to see my favorite shows making mad money in order to feel empowered or whatever it is that it does for other people. It's literally just a study in marketing and branding from my perspective.
