To the manga readers out there, with currently at episode 4, I'm wondering if the adaptation is loyal to the original plot, and if its not is it extremely terrible compared to the manga?

I'm hearing people saying the anime missed out of some key parts in the plot so I'm wondering about it. Watching the anime without ever seeing the manga before seems to be fine, but whats the opinions of manga readers?

I had high hopes for this show prior to episode 3 (haven't watch 4 yet) the pacing feels like it's going for a 1 cour (12 episodes) series. I really hope it isn't the case, but it's looking like another great manga series getting a horrible adaptation.

There's no real excuse for making a bad adaptation of this series, since the source content has over a 100 chapters and quite frankly shouldn't be difficult to adapt in terms of plot progression. So if the anime fails, it's completely due to the studio's incompetence.

Agreed. I haven't touched the anime yet because it looks lacking (for less of a better word) compared to the manga. Just saying that the manga definitely deserves a read if you're just trucking through with the anime.

If the manga is a 8-9 the series atm is a 5-6 for an adaption. Read the manga if you want quality story telling.
The anime industry is dead, the otaku fanbase killed it.

It's studio pierrot. They butchered the adaptation for Beelzebub too

Oh dear.
Absolutely agree on how anime is dying due to pathetic fanbase in Japan.
And yes I know about how studio pierrot absolutely ruined beelzebub which is a shame.
I've got this very very bad feeling it's gonna ruin an excellent manga just like how gokukoku no brynhildr was ruined.

I'll definitely take a look at the manga.
But here's my POV for someone who never saw the manga:
-I was truly attracted by the anime when I saw the first chapter, and do not feel a single bit rushed at all because I did not have to compare it to a manga I've read before.
-Plot is interesting, art is good, music is subjective but still to my liking, enough suspense, only down point was the censorship.

those are my opinions as someone who have not seen the manga

ps I've looked through the first few chapters of the manga after posting this topic, I can indeed see the difference and understand why manga fans are dissapointed. But perhaps the director and producer have the right idea, certain changes of scenes and dialogue and screen arrangement yet at the same time still following the storyline makes it fresh, and it actually may be too slow paced if they use 1 chapter of manga for 1 episode. Downside is manga viewers would obviously want an adaptation thats faithful to the manga.

TBH they did a good job with quality episode even though they have many chapters covered in 1 episode. Yes some scene are cut but it doesnt actually take away the excitement.

I wouldn't call it "bad", it just skips around and feels way too rushed.
So is this anime bad? No.
Is the manga better? So far (as of episode 4) yes.

If you like the anime, just watch it,however if you are really interested in the story, read the manga and see how much better it is than this rushed, censored pathetic adaptation.

Actually an adaptation SHOULD be the same. Just look at how well Attack on Titan did by following the source material almost to the letter.

Sure, changes in and of themselves aren't necessarily a bad thing. The problem is that a lot of the changes/skipping of material is hurting Kaneki, the main protagonist mind you, as a character. That is a problem.

This adaption is really bad and doesn't do the source material justice. I'd even go so far as to say that Danganronpa and DeSu 2 had better adaptions (okay maybe not DeSu 2). You'd be better off reading the manga.

I actually wouldn't mind so much with this new filler they're adding in, if they were staying true to the source material. Hell, they could take this as an opportunity to flesh a few aspects out while helping pad out the beginning to Aogiri arcs to 24 episodes without having to cut anything and without having to screw the adaption.

They're trying to turn it into a Shounen anime...out of a Seinen manga. That's exactly what they're doing, which is why they're pushing the helpless pussy MC, focusing on action while leaving out a lot of world-building/character development, and condensing things so the attention deficient little kiddies don't get bored with their spectacle.

But, they've already thrown down the gauntlet as of episode 4. The anime is complete trash. You'll have a handful of neat scenes, but you might as well just go ahead and book mark the manga so once this you've had your fill of this fail garbage, you can actually go see what the story was about.

It's fine for things to be changed, but they aren't even bothering to make stuff make sense. Episode 4 was the most half assed. Kaneki's actions were so ridiculous, what was up with his logic???

I think the character development the characters get in the manga is one of the most amazing things about it. And in the anime there's no chance for the characters to develop as greatly because of the arc switcharounds and pacing. Not to mention Kaneki was made into an idiot.

Dude where do I even begin, this is a shit adaptation and that's the best way to say it. We all know that some things have to be change and others added in but so much important content was cut that it doesn't even make sense anymore.

All the content that was cut either added to Kaneki's character, to another character or added to the plot. I mean look at episode one, most people thought that when Kaneki tried to stab himself it was either he was trying to commit suicide or trying to test that he was a ghoul when in the manga the reason behind that one specific action was completely different. You see how just removing some small things make a big difference?

Kaneki wasn't even this naive, is this what really appeals to the Japanese audience? What's the point of making him so stupid in the anime when he was not like this in the manga?

By the time the gourmet is introduce Kaneki would have already gone through some development and experience that he would use in the gourmet arc, but the events leading up to this development is changed, so now Kaneki seems like a jackass.

Even Touka has more tsundere quality than usual, by the time the gourmet arc reaches its climax Kaneki and Touka should have gone through some things together which makes them respect each other and have a mutual understanding of one another but even that got cut, So how would they even conclude the gourmet arc net week?

This adaptation is nothing but a joke, Tokyo Ghoul is suppose to be subtle, flowing at a pace that adds impact when certain events happen. Kaneki is suppose to be observant of his surroundings and very weary. His fight with Touru the scrapper should have been longer and he should have been a bad ass, when fighting the scrapper Kaneki uses his past experience to help him gain an advantage, he compared Touru to his past foe but since they moved the arc then Kaneki's development doesn't happen and the fight become shit...he doesn't even drink the damn coffee!

Even his reason for following the gourmet is completely different in the manga, in the anime he was just being retarded.

As far as I'm concerned if you like the anime stick with it but if you are curious then about what really takes place then you can give the manga a shot...though you might end up disliking or even hating the anime like some of the manga readers do myself included.

Sorry for the rant man but this is just so shitty!

Am i the only one who thinks anime is better than the manga? Not about the excessive gore, but if it was at 100% quality (which it will be when BD come out) I would say anime is better than the manga. And i dont mean gore, i mean overall story mostly:

In manga you can see how the mangaka has made some characters solely evil and bizarre just to make main characters look better and suffer harder. While in anime those evil characters kind of seem with a bigger background.

In manga it annoyed me that the coffee shop was made just to make characters wear bartender costumes, but in anime it looks cool xD

Well of course, the manga will get better after this one big thing happens, so right now i would say it is on par with the anime.
*i am at chapter 81 or so in manga atm, and watched 3 episodes - sorry if i drew my comparision lines too early*

After watching the first episode, I rushed through the manga, and fell in love with the series even more than I previously did.
But I am sorta disappointed with the rushed action and the plot switches. I really hope the anime follows through on the most important bits of the manga.

The censored bits really do suck though... Anyone know when the uncensored version will be released?

Which characters have more background in anime than in manga? o_O
And which characters are solely evil and bizarre to make the main characters seem good?
So you don't like the bartender costumes in the manga, but you like in the anime because it looks cool? And no, the coffee shop is a main plot point and not just there for the looks.

Yes, this adaptation does not do the manga justice at all. The pacing is so rushed and it is hurting the character development of Kaneki and the other characters.

An entire arc has been skipped. I heard that they were going to adapt it later. But the arc has already lost its meaning if they are planning on adapting it after the Gourmet arc. The Dove arc was where Kaneki becomes stronger from training with Touka and Yomo. He also meets the CCG for the first time. You also begin to see just how humans ad ghouls are in their respective worlds, and how Kaneki is the only one able to see it from both their viewpoints.

Kaneki was much stronger in the Gourmet arc in the manga. He also wasn't that stupid in going with Gourmet to his restaurant. In the manga he went with him to investigate him. The people he met in the bar asked him too. In exchange for information of the other One Eyed Ghoul.

The manga is so much better than the anime. It should not be judged based on this horrible adaptation. Its still pretty fun to watch due to the animation, OST and voice actor. But everything was butchered. Damn Pierrot.

After 4 episodes, I'd say it's kinda meh, especially considering how well the manga handles its pacing in comparison. Don't get me wrong, tho: the anime had pretty much anything it needed to be a potentially great adaptation (immersive atmosphere brought by fine visuals and an excellent soundtrack, as well as a pilot episode that easily gets newcomers and manga readers alike hooked).

The problem is how much content has been cut down and the manner in which most scenes were re-arranged, which is a shame, since the idea of linking different arcs together by adding a few filler scenes was excellent: Kaneki's characterization really suffers from it, and an event or action that otherwise would make perfect sense is now attributed to utter stupidity/naïveté on his part. Not only that, but some major events lose most of their impact due to the chain of events leading up to them being left out.
Things would've probably gone way more smoothly if they had the proper amount of episodes to animate all the chapters they seem to be planning on adapting (which is around 65+).

TL;DR In any case read the manga.

well, the anime is passable, it got all the main plot points although tons of stuffs were cut.
basically, if people watching the anime are annoyed by characters or the plotholes in the story, go read the manga, the characters are better (since anime had to cut tons of characterization to fit the story) and all plotholes in the anime dont exist or are filled later.

At first the anime was doing a fairly good job in lining up with the manga, but then it just started to go off and SKIP A WHOLE VOLUME. Like that is not okay, that is not okay at all.

At first it was just the sequence of things and lack of detail, now it's just completely ehhhh. I mean when this anime is over it will get a 10/10 in sound, but everything else is just no. They rushed many parts, skipped around, and there's only 12 episodes. Like dah fuck man. I have never been so upset in my entire life.

I mean for how much they are rushing and changing it, it isn't that bad. The anime is completely relying on the strength of the source material to not be bashed on completely. But the manga is no doubt far better as it fills the gaps that this anime is creating and is not rushed like the anime. It is a shame they only got 12 episodes and not 24 because this could be so much better. As a stand alone anime it is good but still bad pacing. However when compared the manga it is pretty weak.
