I got my mom to watch Attack on Titan. She loved it, even though she acts lie she doesn't. Right now watching Anohana. She's digging it so far. I'm trying to pick out anime that's interesting. She gets easily bored. I'll keep trying shows that are sad though. Maybe Clannad, but 50 episodes is a tad too long for her. |

WeirdHeather said: This thread makes me think carefully of my own situation. I enjoy anime - at least certain genres - and I am the age of many of your parents. But I'm definitely a weirdo. Even at my age, I can enjoy some series that shouldn't appeal at all to my demographic - such as magical girl and harem shows. ... No, you're not a weirdo, ask anyone what differences between anime and cartoon, most of the people would say that anime is for all ages, while cartoons are mainly for kids, though, I think everyone can watch whatever they like ignoring the age, so, it doesn't matter what's your age, while you enjoy it. Seeing other comments, I must say each parent is different, like some of your parents like Ghibli films, my dad for example is not a big fan, he doesn't find anything interesting in them (As most of them are fantasy), my mother liked Grave of Fireflies, it's only anime I showed them. UnculturedWhitey said: My dad laughed hard at Detroit Metal City. I showed it to my mother, no good, she didn't really understood the humor, dropped at half. My dad was the watching-cartoons-with-me-parent, when I was a kid, but I've never tried showing him any anime 'on purpose'. Tho I'm sure he's watching/would watch anything with lots of fights. I was watching some anime with my mom, tho. She's seen some episodes of Bebop with me and liked it. We also watched Grave of fireflies together (and cried together). Later, I've showed her Tsumiki no Ie and she really enjoyed it. She also watched Tokyo Godfathers on her own and liked it. |

My Father really likes anime. We used to watch it together a few years ago but now we watch anime on own. I think he's currently watching pokemon, one piece, Saint Seiya Omega, Gundam and is waiting for the new Fate anime. My mom watches anime only if it's dubbed because she doesn't like to listen japanese, she dislikes the language. |

My friend's dad watched Death Note and liked it a lot. I myself have never watched any anime with my parents (since I don't think DBZ counts because of some reasons), but I want to watch Monster or Rainbow with my dad because I think he might like it. As for my mom, I don't know. She is more into the romance or comedy genre for movies, but I don't think any of the anime that I watched from these types would suit her taste, unfortunately. Maybe we should just watch Monster together, anyway haha. |

I showed my dad Cowboy Bebop and Ergo Proxy, and I showed my older brother Mononoke and Psycho Pass. I mostly wanted to dispel any stereotypes they had about the medium, as their only previous experience with Anime was when me and my older brother, like everyone else, watched DBZ as a kid on Toonami. While they won't go out of their way to watch any series, they now know Anime is not all childish stuff. |

I'll say that I had quite the opposite problem in 1985, during a period when I found myself unemployed. I hated cartoons. It was my retired father who introduced me to Robotech. It took him two weeks of pestering me to give it a try because it's different. One day I gave in and, well, the rest is history. :) I enjoy slice of life anime the most now, having left behind the space monsters and cyborg anime. If it takes place in Japan in recent times and has endearing characters, I like it. My wife and her sister are hooked on kimi ni todoke, after I spent $200 on the three sets of blu ray discs. They. Also like Garden of Words and Colorful. There is no stereotypical anime. There is only the limited perceptions of those who've been exposed to a tiny sliver of mainstream anime. |

Ah, this is a good topic for us younglings. I've watched every one of Hayao Miyazaki's films with my parents at some point. Like me, they appreciate that brilliant beauty. I watched Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell Innocence with my father. Him having been an avid science-fiction reader when he was younger, he certainly appreciated them both. The same goes for when I watched Akira with him. I showed my mother the film Colorful and I think she appreciates me more now. I tried watching Texhnolyze with my mother in the room. I may have forgotten about the horrifying and utterly weird first episode. That didn't entirely work out, although my father had some interest in it when I was going through the later episodes. I fully watched Serial Experiments Lain with my mother, who was able to appreciate the subtle complexity. I watched Kino's Journey with my father. This is a series we both really have a love for. Mushishi is something I watch at-least a few episodes a month of. My father tunes in at times and, as I do, really appreciates its outlook on nature and society living together. It's really great to watch shows with anyone, be it your parents, siblings, or friends. If you haven't, show one of your favorites to someone, and maybe make sure it isn't awkwardly sexualized if it's their first time. |

In my experience people who don't watch anime have a much lower tolerance for surreal imagery than those who do. And also, in my personal experience, those who don't have a high tolerance for symbolic or surreal imagery are often chased away by too much of it. |

My father actually introduced me to anime many years ago during the first Scifi anime marathon. Roujin Z, Akira, Project Ako, and a few others hooked me into anime. I just took it and ran with it. I'd get series online from other people, ebay, or conventions. He'd buy those $30 movies at Sunco and Media Play. For a while there he picked a show he liked and watched it obsessively, like Berserk, Escaflowne, Nadesico, Tenchi, etc. Since he got netflix he'll watch show after show. Then complain when there's no more anime for him to watch. On the other hand mom hates the stuff. I think the one show she's ever shown interest in was YuYu Hakusho during the retrieve Yukina arc. She really got into that one. I know our family's obsession turned her off of it. Though I think if I showed her things like Fire Tripper, Grave of the Fireflies, or Hanibei Renmei she'd enjoy them. Funnygames I'm going to suggest Roujin Z, Scrapped Princess, or Witch Hunter Robin for your mother. Serial Experiments Lain and Bubblegum Crisis 2040 might be other ones you can try. |

My parents don't usually watch anime with me. Mom's not really interested in watching any anime or cartoons. My dad likes watching cartoons in general, so he doesn't mind watching anime. Nowadays I tend to watch anime when he and my mother would be watching something else on t.v. I had watched a couple of anime with my Dad. Once watched Yu-gi-Oh with him and he wondered why Yugi and his friends sounded older than teenagers. He also watched the episode when Joey mentioned Serenity's operation was expensive. He asked me if she's just getting an eye operation, or a brand-new body. He also enjoyed watching Read or Die (OVA) with me. Thanks to an episode of Robotech that crept her out when she was very young, my older sister refuses to watch any anime. So, she wouldn't want to watch any of my suggestions. But, she did seem to be interested in Ghost in the Shell. |

iiYuki said: My mum thinks anime is a type of porn... Hahaha! My mom used to think that, too. I don't watch a whole lot of anime with my parents, particularly my dad who I don't see very often as he lives far away. What I have shown my mom is Code Geass, Avatar: The Last Airbender (yes, I know it's technically not anime), and the first few episodes of Mushi-shi. She really liked Code Geass and loved Avatar. I'm not sure what she thought of Mushi-shi, as she kept falling asleep while watching it (she works like a dog, so she can be pretty tired in the evenings). I've watched the first episode (maybe two episodes?) of Fullmetal Alchemist with my dad, and he didn't care much for it. Same with the first three episodes of Avatar. He inadvertently watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop and liked it. We watched a couple random episodes of Mushi-shi together and he liked that, as well as the first few episodes of Code Geass, which he really liked, I think because of the fact that it was doing an alternate take on history. We also watched Kara no Kyoukai together, but beyond the animation he didn't care much for it. My dad doesn't like fantasy very much at all. With Kara no Kyoukai, he thought the characters were very expressionless, which I can fully understand, especially with the visual aesthetic of that series. In general I only show my parents things that I think they might like, given what I've shown them before and their reactions to those shows. After all, who wants to watch something they don't care much for? One reason I have for deciding to start watching some anime with my parents is to get them to realize that it can have substance and is a worthwhile form of entertainment and enjoyment of the video medium. Considering that I love watching anime, and that I've gotten more and more into it over the past several years, I don't want my parents to think of it as only being childish cartoons or animated porn. A lot of people I've come across who only know very vaguely what anime is seem to be unnecessarily dismissive of it (a former guitar teacher called it "Japanimation" somewhat demeaningly), so I guess showing my parents anime is a way for me to at least show some people close to me what it is in its full form, as well as a way to share a very enjoyable activity of mine with them. |
