Before yes, now, no. Two girls can be friends without any romantic feelings. That applies to two guys and a guy and a girl. Well, a guy and a girl with chemistry is an exception though.

And two guys can be friends without romance.. You're not proving any point. Yet people like Yaoi. How does that have any relevance to you not liking yuri or not?

I haven't ever come across any quality yuri, nor do I really go looking for it. I probably wouldn't mind it if I liked the characters and it felt natural, as opposed to it just being there for the sake of fanservice.

You're missing out. You've witnessed potential yuri if you have seen Kill la Kill. The most popular ships are probably the yuri ones.

Yuri isn't masturbational or arousing material.
Do you get aroused when you see a pretty flower?

Attractive women having sex and pretty flowers aren't quite the same thing.

My first reaction probably involved a lot of giggling and waving my hands around happily at the cuteness.

Can't do IT with manga. We have doujinshis and Drama CDs.

Wow, there's quite a few immature replies in this thread o_o. Let's be respectful towards lesbian women, okay?

My discovery of yuri is actually pretty significant to me. I watched Black Rock Shooter back in 2012 and I discovered it while going through the FF archives. It was this fanfic https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7024005/1/Normality that became my first experience with yuri. I... didn't hate it. I wasn't appalled by it. I liked it, actually. I was confused about it, but there was something about it that felt like discovery and I was scared of that discovery.

Because I'd unknowingly fallen head over in heels in love with my then-best friend close around the same time (it was seventh grade), and I didn't know what I was feeling. I deluded myself into thinking this earth-shattering connection was merely friendship, but there were whispers, rumors — "she's gay, she's totally gay for her, haven't you seen the way she hangs off of her all the time?" and it made me question myself a lot. But I kept denying it; I kept telling myself that that's just how friends are, that it's normal to feel depressed if you don't see her for a week, normal to miss her to the point of pain and tears during the summer from when she was gone, normal to be super jealous at the idea of her having a boyfriend someday, normal to be unable to keep my hands off of her, to be completely entranced like I was on cloud nine when she would sing, to feel light and happy and blissful just being in her arms and seeing her smile, always having to stop myself from kissing her on the cheek, for touching her and being with her to feel so electric...

But I didn't have anybody to talk to about it; nobody told me that this was okay. Everyone acted like it something wrong, something taboo, like I was a freak or something and I was scared.

But yuri actually really helped me. I kept reading yuri fanfics, from BRS to MLP: FiM lesbian shipping later on, but I kept telling myself "I like the stories where they're just friends better, but this is nice too" when in reality, it wasn't just nice, it was great. For once, it felt right to me.

And then I got into Madoka Magica two years and basically fell head over heels into yuri hell — there wasn't even any denying it anymore, I loved yuri. At this point I had been considering myself asexual for awhile because I'd never been interested in guys and it didn't feel right to me, but the label 'asexual' didn't feel right either... because I did want someone. I felt sad when I said it, because it wasn't how I really felt. Cue my freshman year of highschool where I really started noticing girls a lot more to the point of fantasy, and I started to truly consider that I might be a lesbian.

Then I found the Sakura Trick manga late December, and started watching the anime when it came out shortly thereafter, and it was my first real yuri series. And I started looking into more of this sort of thing, except there was still this one last barrier holding me back from yelling "hell yea I'm a lesbian!" It was still that same fear of being something different, something a lot of people considered wrong and might even hate me for. So I just said I was curious and told myself I wouldn't accept it until I fell in love (at this time I was still convinced what I had for my old best friend was platonic).

Then three months later I decided to accept this girl I'd been friends with on the internet for awhile's feelings for me... and we ended up doing online dating two months before we broke up. But it was an eye-opener for me — I finally embraced the fact that I'm gay.

Now I'm obsessed with yuri and always hunting for more of it. For me, it's a breath of fresh air; it feels like me connecting with something that I can relate to — something I can look at and think "I've felt that way before too." It was the thing that really helped me understand my own sexuality and come to terms with it.

So it has a very special place in my heart, and I think its existence is probably pretty significant to other lesbians, too — it's representation for us, and it helps us understand ourselves and lets us know that it's okay to be who we are. Particularly since I'm closeted to my family and not out to that big of a handful of people at school, so it's just this sort of emotional relief to settle into something that I can connect to when I'm constantly blasted with heteronormativity and put in really awkward situations because of it.

That's what yuri means to me personally. And it does kind of bother me the amount of sexual objectification of it in this thread; I mean yea, I similarly find two women together attractive but please do respect and acknowledge the actual relationships we have with eachother too while you're at it, okay? I mean I'm sure most of you do, but just keep it in mind. o_o

Anyways, that's my story. Sorry it's kind of long, but it really was a journey for me.

Wel, it is true, haha! I won't point fingers, but I did see some homophobic/objectiifying remarks, as well as the accursed 'yuri is for straight guys and yaoi is for straight girls' misconception that basically erases the actual gay people who might identify with those sorts of things.

And I don't know, the whole 'girl on girl is hot' trope has always rubbed me the wrong way; my feelings towards it is similar to how I would be if I had a girlfriend and if we were out together and some horny straight guy came up and was like "Wow, you two are dating! That's so hot! Can I watch you have sex?" You know, just ignoring the whole relationship and seeing us as sexual objects there for their own gratification. Of course it's less severe in a fictional setting but the undertones of such an attitude are still present. Don't know, I'm probably just nitpicking but it does make me feel a little slighted. Especially when I've had guys who are *way* too interested in hearing about what I find sexually appealing, asking enough questions to make me pretty uncomfortable and not understanding why I'm not all that gung-ho for hentai, and then just asking "is there sex" when I talk about yuri anime I've seen >_>. It's just that obnoxious single-minded disregard for anything else that can be pretty grating.

Whoa, that got a little ranty there. But yea, I mean I can't stop anybody from doing it and it's not really my business whether they do, I just don't like the attitude it spreads. But yea, that's what I was pointing towards. I guess it is a bit of a funny opener, huh?

(I don't know how to cut down on quotes yet because I'm still a bit new at posting here so have these functional @'s instead lol)

@Vanisher: Thank you! =)
@Extamplier: Ah, I guess it would make for an interesting coming of age story; I've actually never really seen a yuri anime that focused on the 'falling in love with your straight best friend' route much. Or just focused on a character's realization and acceptance of their sexuality and not aim for a full-out love story. (Sort of like The Miseducation of Cameron Post if anyone's read that book; while there is romance it falls to pieces like first relationships generally do and it's mostly about a girl in the 90s struggling to figure out her sexuality and then being sent to an anti-gay conversion school by her homophobic aunt that causes her a lot of emotional distress in understanding who she is).

Simoun and Yuri Kuma Arashi would similarly be good choices to me if you're looking for something that's not just a straight up SOL, although Yuri Kuma's probably not for everyone with its wacky symbolism and metaphors. Candy Boy was pretty great though; I did enjoy that one, though I felt that the manga provided a more fleshed out story. Strawberry Panic's kind of an entry-level yuri rite of passage, though to me it's far from the best. Sakura Trick's good if you just want cute girls kissing (I was depressed during its runtime so the reason why I like it so much is because it was literally the one thing I had to look forward to every week to carry myself on for, so it has a more personal meaning to me) but it's still adorable.

Overall, the amount of good yuri anime is a pretty small repertoire, yea. I would reccomend yuri manga if you're actually looking for the goodies. Some notable ones are Girl Friends (one of my faves personally; it's practically a classic) Citrus, and Sasameko Koto [which does have a 13 episode anime but it barely covers the beginning of the manga and cuts off before things get more interesting].

Yea, a lot of things are kind of a waste of time around here =P But point taken ^^. It's just too tempting to try and smack some little fuckboys around sometimes lol. Or I just take things too seriously. Either way, haha. -shrug-

Now I'm getting random flashbacks of being hit on by some creepy giant guy at a pep rally and wanting to scream "I'm gay!" and throw myself off the bleachers [wake me up inside] but instead uncomfortably sitting there trying to be polite and somehow turn down him asking for my number in a non 'fuck off' way and then later being way too shy to reject him forcing me into holding pinkies with him during the stupid song while he practically leered at me. I don't know why this is coming back to me, just on the subject of creepily sexual guys that get really disrespectful towards girls. o_o.

I really did just want to just hurl myself off the bleachers, though. /randomstory. Maybe that has to do with why those types rub me the wrong way. Along with aforementioned creepily sexual guy friend that was way too invested in hearing what I was into. And other encounters. [slides down wall] So when I see guys like that I'm just like [menacingly wields ten foot pole to keep them at bay]

If you're talking about King_Kiashi, they also sexually harassed her though. There's not much of an excuse for that. If you wanna masturbate to some near-stranger, you keep quiet about it.

I don't really care though if people see yuri as being merely fodder for their fapping sessions. Everybody's done their own objectification here and there anyway and yuri characters are fictional.
