I didn't think a movie like this would ever occur. I'm kind of interested to see where it goes.

If Mochizou doesn't get a happy ending I fear I will flip a desk. He was the only reason I watched Tamako Market, I want him to be happy T.T

Well, I saw the film on premier day (Saturday with nothing much to do and I am a moderate fan of KyoAni living in Japan - what else can I do?). Wrote a small review (without big spoilers), so if you are bored to death you might read it.

What will be the outcome can be safely guessed by watching the PV. The outcome is not really important, but the process is.

SPOILERS: Tamako will not join the Light Music Club, the Classics Club, or the SOS brigade. She won't be practicing the Way of Tanks, and she is not going to work at her grandma's onsen ryokan in Kaga Prefecture. Tamako will not turn into a devil, but she won't appear as a ghost in front of her friends either. She will not wear a stone mask to stop being human. Tamako is definitely not the third ranking Level 5-er in the Scientific City, and her sister won't be involved in the Level 6 Shift Project (although the voice actress is the same, ha).

It's titled Love Story - and it is. But there's another theme, which is how to get over obstacles and grow up (an important question avoided in K-On!).

Believe it or not, (as much as I love K-On!) Tamako Love Story is overall better as a film.

On surface it's a simple story of confession, love sickness, and answer, as you mostly see in the trailers. But the movie has certain depth as a story of family, friends, lost love, maturing, and overcoming of burdens.

The overall direction is what it saves from banality and makes it stand out among hundreds of ordinary love stories. That aspect isn't fully revealed in the trailers. Like Kyoto cuisine known for its refined and light taste, Kyoto Animation executes this movie brilliantly with elegance and subdued touch; simple is the best.

For three weeks in row since premiere Tamako Love Story has been topping the mini-theaters' ranking in Japan. Although it's a "small" film shown at limited number of theaters, it has been the second most tweeted film after Disney's Frozen shown at the same time. Animator Hiroshi Nishikiori (director of Azumanga Daioh and Magical Index) has praised the film; scriptwriter Jukki Hanada (Steins Gate, Love Live!) confessed his "defeat" and "deep love" to the movie "with tears rolling down while walking the streets". Animation critics have praised it as a "classic" and one of the "achieved heights of Japanimation". As of 12 May, 2014, Yahoo film! comment has a 4.13 score out of 87 review comments (including those giving 1 point for the sake of dissing apparently without even seeing the actual movie). Coco film twitting site has 94% approval out of 60,835 tweets.

Tamako Love Story will probably remain a moderate commercial success and not a major blockbuster movie like K-On!. It won't have a large and deep fan base comparable to Haruhi. It is an "unexpected hit" which spun out of the TV series faring rather disappointing disc sales. But I think it can't be denied that the overall quality of the movie wins over K-On! Movie and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's the best of KyoAni so far. It could be the best love story told in an animation movie format produced in Japan.

If you think all this is hyped- watch, then tell.

Additional comments of praise:
Makoto Shinkai (short animation films director): Just watched Tamako Love Story. It was a veeery cute movie. I haven't watched the TV series but it was fun throughout! Though it's been a month passed from the premiere, about 80% of the seats at the theater was occupied. Wow ...

Those are some very big shoes to fill, my friend. DoHS is a movie of epic proportions and there have been some amazing romance films (5 Centimeters Per Second, Hotarubi no Mori e, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Hal, Bungaku Shoujo, etc.). Hopefully it does live up to the hype.

Well, it's a matter of preference, but regardless of whether one likes Tamako Love Story more than other movies or not, it can't be denied that it is a classic of a certain genre (non-Ghibli Japanimation; primarily for late night adult audience; slice of life; moe; teenage romance; overall maturing theme). Script-writing by Reiko Yoshida, animation by Yukiko Horiguchi and the KyoAni team, and film direction by Naoko Yamada (no wonder she's highly evaluated within KyoAni, she's got talent!) really worked well on this one.

Scriptwriter Jukki Hanada tweeted on 8th May: Just saw Tamako Love Story, and now I'm walking the streets of Shinjuku in tears. Shit! They've got me! I loved it!

Another thing to note about the movie was the soundtrack, which was excellent.
Track #13 Tamako in Panic
Track #14 Tender Rain
Track #31 Towards Where the Wind Blows
These are my favorites. Others include #26 "To Mamedai-san" (Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star sung out of tune by Yoko Hikasa- she's done great job as Hinako, Tamako's deceased mother), and #27 Ue o muite aruko (aka "Sukiyaki Song", arrangement).
