| In the sense that Plato was yes, and I believe women are oppressed in many societies around the world, this is an awful thing and needs to be remedied (by those societies themselves, not through the dropping of bombs). In the west though, the story is entirely different, I'd say women are free as ever here and that feminists like to take things a bit far. The whole doctrine of modern day feminism rests on this whole "bad guy" "poor victimized woman" mindset. The truth is gender roles place a lot of restrictions on MEN as well as WOMEN and as a man I can recount numerous instances where I've been discriminated against simply for being male. For most feminists acknowledging this would destroy the whole evil patriarchy vs poor innocent dames dichotomy and so they tend not to. The ones that do acknowledge it often start putting forward a case that proves they're the bigger victims, it's not a contest I want to be part of. |
