Resizing
Sometimes you will find you need to resize an image that is too big. This is very easy, all image editing programs have a resize option. Just find the one on the menu bar of your program and use it, for example:

Whoa! This image is way to large to use for MAL stuff, its bigger than my computer screen. There's a resize option tho, circled here (this is Microsoft Paint).

Resizing is very straightforward. I choose to resize it to 640px across, down from 2000px.

After resizing, it is definitely better to work with!

Tip: When you resize an image to a smaller size, it can lose a little of its quality but will be smaller in memory size in addition to area. Resizing to a larger size will make it blurry and lose much quality, avoid this if possible.

Resizing in GIMP
If you want to see how to specifically resize in Gimp:
Resizing in gimp

Other programs
All programs have a resizing feature, just search the bar for it or a similar function like "scaling". If you really can't find it ask here!

Cropping images
Sometimes resizing the image isn't enough since it doesn't display the area we want or is still too big, or we want to take only part of it out without resizing it. To do this, you can crop it. Cropping is like cutting an image down or out or out from another. Most image editors can except Microsoft Paint which can't crop very effectively. You can use GIMP, JASC Animation Shop and of course Photoshop for better cropping. Here's a quick example of cropping the image in Paint and JASC.

Visual examples:

Microsoft Paint:

Resizing (memory)
When people/internets say resize an image, it usually refers to resizing the area which I told you about here. But sometimes they refer to resizing (lowering) the memory (KB, MB). One way to is to make the image smaller or crop it. Another option is to change the file type from PNG or Bitmap to JPG, which you can choose when you resave an image in your editing programs. If you need to lower the memory in a GIF, take out frames- try every other frame to maintain fluidity.

Just a tip:

in MS Paint, to easily crop an image first select all(CTRL + A in english, mine in spanish is CTRL + E), then move to locate top-left corner, this action is like crop, and finally crop with the white squares. With this you don't need to flip the image.

MS Paint uses lineal interpolation to resize and this is why the image lose quality, so I just use it to save a Screenshot.

Whoa I didn't know that, should be useful for as you mentioned screenshots as Paint opens up really fast.
