The 2003 series outdid FMAB in the same parts of the manga they covered, not to mention had better music. I'm also fan of the darker tone '03 had. I could only imagine how great it would be had it stayed true to the manga.

The manga hadn't finished back then technically..how would they stay "true" to it then?

I'm just saying hypothetically "what if", obviously it wasn't possible at the time.

Well irrespective of the fact, some people still prefer FMA,we wouldn't have got FMAB then which is a strict no,because its my favorite anime of all time.

If it had been a full adaptation of the manga, Brotherhood most likely wouldn't have been created... so this thread is meaningless

Then Brotherhood wouldn't have existed in first place.

Let me rephrase this then, if the 2003 series was a true adaptation could it have been rated higher than what brotherhood is rated now?

Why would it? It'd be exactly the same story-wise, but the animation would be way worse which would be a problem for many newer anime fans. So no, it wouldn't

Better music? Better pacing? Different tone? Less random awkward comedy? There's a lot other factors to consider than just animation.

It did better than FMA:B in Japan. So it doesn't matter here..

How would the tone be different? Or the random comedy? Or pacing for that sake? If it had stayed true to the manga, don't you think it would become what Brotherhood is just with different animation and sound?

The replies in this thread are basically the reason the anime community sucks. You guys obviously understood the question, yet chose to ignore it and display your arrogance and "knowledge". Good one.

I'm about to start FMA:B so I was interested in people's thoughts here, otherwise I'd give you a legit answer. But for the record, from what I've seen, I prefer the 2003 art style. And even though I generally watch subs over dubs, 2003 Al's English voice actor gave one of the most memorable performances I've ever heard.

If somehow FMA 03 had been the same story as the manga, they probably wouldn't have made Brotherhood, and I think it would be as highly rated if not more highly rated because it would have a more satisfying conclusion for most people and people who prefer Brotherhood's tone wouldn't have Brotherhood to compare it to. I think there would still be people who dislike it simply because they don't care of the tone, but all in all I think it would be more highly rated.

Hence why he asked about rating not ranking.

Jeez, its an impossible hypothetical, but it wouldnt kill people to think about it and just discuss the thoughts. Buncha threadkillers here.

I sont recall which had better animation but Id guess FMA original wouldnt live up to the same rating. I suspect Brotherhood has some level sequel bias even if they arent sequels.

No because the direction the manga went was boring anyway, and apparently a lot of MAL's audience didn't like FMA 2003's darker execution, so if anything it would have scored lower. Honestly I rather prefer Brotherhood was just a scene-for-scene remake of the 2003 series' plot with better production values, while maybe adding in some extended fight sequences and Olivier Armstrong with an interesting backstory that goes beyond just her Rule of Cool presence she had in Brotherhood, but I know that wasn't the purpose of the remake and I'm in a minority on this, so whatever.

Well i honestly think that its not going to be ranked better.
Reason 1: FMA:B got better opening end ending themes.

THATS an understatment. They got waaaaaay better opening and ending themes but that is not what makes an anime. Its still an important point to me tho.

Reason 2: you said you liked the sound tracks because they are shadier. I like the second soundtracks better than the first

Really i think that the sound tracks in FMA:B is WAAAAAY BETTER again because i think that it matches with the anime's mood better. Its an action comedy so the sound tracks cant be really shady and moody

Reason 3: you said something about charecter designs being better in FMA.

Well honestly i think also the charecter designs in FMA:B are better but i cant really support that opinion because its just my opinion. But well it matches the anime because the plot is kind of complicated and for people (like me) who cant really get stuff quickly its something good. In death note i had to watch it two times to get the whole thing that Light and L were saying. I was always distracted by the beuty of the art even tho some of you may not like it.

Reason 4: the animations were waaaaaay better because the 2003-2010 time difference.

I wouldn't have FMA:B any other way and it will always be no.1 on my list.

I talked for too long. Hope you read it till the end.

Well in that case that would turn out exactly as FMAB is, and probably get the same ratings? Also in that case there wouldn't be any remake, since that anime would've went according to the manga...
