Most of the people that didn't like Bebop are the people who watched it because they heard it was good and got hyped up. When it first aired on Adult Swim, it was revolutionary at that time and those watching it had massive amounts of appreciation for the show.

i understand but like i said before they are in a weird middle ground where it is both a plot focused and episodic show. i just think that they really needed to pick 1 of the 2 because when you try and do both it really fails

Episodic only works for me if the series is heavy on comedy. Hell girl is another example of an episodic show that I ended up dropping. Sooooooooo repetitive ._. I got pretty burnt out after 8 episodes or so.

@episodic haters: As if there were really good plots around. Seriously, I've watched like 5-10 anime that had the plot as the most enjoyable aspect, normally the strong suit of anime lies elsewhere, so episodic shows are perfect because they make use of the strong parts of anime, characters, worldbuilding and such.

I probably regret this post by now.

I generally don't care for episodic anime but Cowboy Bebop actually has a main plot identified early on and most of the episodes that don't involve the main story are still hits rather than misses.

Like I said, the best of the SoL are not represented by the highschool genre.
Azumanga, Kimi to boku are the rare highschool SoL shows which are good, but they still can't compare with HnC, Nodame, Maison Ikkoku, Yomigaeru sora, Planetes amongst others.
I hate it when people think of SoL and only say 'highschool'.

I think this thread really opens up the old "Characters vs. Story" discussion....

Some people prefer Characters over story and vice versa.

In Cowboy Bebop I preferred the characters over the story, and I enjoyed it, I loved Spike, Jet, Faye, and yes even that weird kid.

Also the Dub is excellent....I just wanted to throw that in there....it's better than the sub actually.

I think people think of Highschools when they hear SoL because those are the ones that are the most popular.

Also, unfortunately I haven't seen any of the ones you mentioned so I can't really offer any commentary on that.

You make it sound like its that easy. The characters need to be good, well written in the first place.
Liking a character depends how well its written and potrayed. I won't tolerate plastic cutouts, even more so in SoL, because the characters make the show.
