I haven't watched the second movie but i just finised watching the first movie and i decide to ask this. tbh, i always think about it from when i watch bakemonogatari, but i just forget it in the end and never ask it in this forum. so this time, i want to ask why he always wearing an evil symbol earing and necklace ?

if you don't know that upside down cross is the symbol of evil you can check it out on google and just type "upside down cross"

don't get me wrong. it's not like i don't want to see him wearing those kind of things or hate him for wearing that. well, it bothers me a bit, but it's just a little bit. cause, he is an exorcist isn't he ? or something like that. so why someone who is always working to manage the balance between "entity" and humans wearing an earing and necklace which is a symbol of evil ?

i just want to know the reason why he wear that. is it on purpose ? is it just a decoration ? he doesn't know the meaning of it ? is it means a different things ?am i overthinking it ?

if it means a different things then okay. but to me, upside down cross is still a symbol of evil even tho some people see it in a different way or perspective.

Edit: and if you watched Ao no Exorcist, when you saw the gate that connect human world and demons world which was summoned by "satan", you can see an upside down cross on top of the gate "which was summoned by 'satan' "

Some quick googling gave me a probable answer:

"Recently, however, it is common for the upside-down cross to be used as a symbol of atheism, humanism, and the occult"
http://www.gotquestions.org/upside-down-cross.html

Now, for the more important question: Why doesn't Oshino Meme light his cigarettes?

That meaning of upside down cross is pretty new. It originally comes from st. Peter and is far from "evil". We can only guess what meaning, if any, it has for Oshino.

I think there's heavy censorship in anime regarding cigarettes specifically, i.e.: a lit cigarette of a character from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure getting censored.

he's also said in novel if he lit the cigarette it is gonna be hard became anime literally.

never expected/thought that it has another meaning.
well, in my eyes, it's still a symbol of evil no matter how many times i see it.

Well, I read Kizumonogatari and have seen all the monogatari series.
From my perspective, he is like Geralt, from the game series "Witcher" (if oshino could fight he might as well be called a Witcher) he gets rid of monsters, he brings balance, he doesnt involve himself in anything if it is not necesary.
He wears upside down cross earing and necklace maybe because he is just sorrounded by evil, and that way he is not harmed.
Also, you are overthiking it, since this anime revolves around non-existing entities, just around some myths: for example Greek Mythology, which is non-existent and it all comes from Homers Poem (this doesnt appear in the anime, its just an example)

I've always seen it as a symbol of humility. The upside down cross' origins are with St. Peter, who chose to be crucified upside down so it was not in a manner that likened him to Jesus Christ. Oshino Meme is stated in the series to be the kind of specialist who acts as a mediator rather than as an exterminator or anyone who deals directly with apparitions. He's interested in how humans and apparitions communicate and cohabitate, kind of like a hippy of the apparition specialist world :P

So, to me it makes sense if the upside down cross has a meaning like that. It's not something that's ever been associated with the Occult or Satanism, so I doubt it was just thrown on in that way, especially since special attention is brought to the necklace in several scenes of Bakemonogatari.

That's pretty much the meaning of the upside don cross.

The whole "evil" meaning of it was because of those horror movies.

Satan isn't necessarily evil in religion.
Also, Satan was an angel.

it's a matter of perspective. not a fact.
