Anime Relations: One Piece
One of this site's rules is when an anime is completed, only the scores of users who have watched at least 1/5 of the total amount of episodes will count. Now I believe that is a good rule, it helps the rating be more about the whole show and there are probably other reasons. And for most anime they don't end up having the problem that I am going to speak of.
They air for about 3 months, they end, the rule kicks in, and their score settles. But there are long running anime, anime that have been airing for years, a couple even for over 40 years, that this rule of course doesn't apply to because they're still airing. And I think that is unfair, they've been airing for years(over 10x longer than most finished anime), have large fanbases, have already been licensed and air on TV in other countries, reviews can be made for them, and they have to wait for them to finish to have an accurate score. Most known are the battle shounens, Detective Conan, and the rest are anime that aren't popular online but are in Japan(Sazae-san, Anpanman, Chibi Maruko chan, etc). Detective Conan and One Piece themselves have been airing for over 10 years and we still don't know exactly when they will end. The thing that I don't like is, if someone watches one episode of Detective Conan, then their score counts the same as someone who has watched all 698 currently airing episodes.

Even though I say the "one episode and rate" problem multiple times on here. I am not talking literally only about people who watch only one episode, rate the anime, and then have their score count. I'm talking about how I find it ridiculous that as long as the anime is airing, someone can watch 1 episode or a small amount of a 700 episode anime(like Detective Conan) on up will have their score count the same as someone who's watched all of those episodes. So it just means people who've watched a very small amount yet still have the same score weight as someone who's watched all.

Now here's my question. Why aren't airing episodes kept track of? Is it because of moderation, that might have been a problem when this site first started up but now there's over 1.8 million members and tons of regular members that wouldn't mind updating it. Or is it some sort of legal issue, which then would kind of put a hole in my plan(least likely). Or is it simply because it doesn't seem worth it since most anime will only air for a couple of months and there are only about 30 anime at a time that are considered long running that would benefit from it. Reasons one and three seem the most likely, especially three.

I started out just wanting to solve the watch one episode and rate problem, which is when I just thought of an episode limit(#1). Then I thought of more possible things that can make it more accurate and could provide some info(on the amount of episodes) while still fixing that problem, which helped me then create #2 and #3.There are three things other than fixing the one episode and watch problem that I thought might fit better with the site.

a. Accuracy of rating, in this situation the most accurate rating would be the site's normal rating of only counting the scores of someone who has watched at least 1/5 of the total episodes. I will compare how all three possible solutions affect the rating compared to MAL's most accurate way, I will call it the ideal rating.

b. Info it provides for new and existing users to the anime about the amount of episodes. The forum that you have to use to see the current amount of episode for an airing anime is two clicks away from the front page of an anime and not reliable, it's ideal to have the amount of episodes on the front page where you would be looking at the other info. Why the forum is kind of unreliable is the threads are not in order and can't be put in order, if someone is rewatching the show, catching up, or continuing a conversation on a previous episode, the threads would get jumbled. Add in other threads related to the anime but not episode discussions being bumped or being made and possible fansubbing issues and you have a messed up front page that makes it even harder to find the current episode. I will compare all three possible solutions ability to provide info on the front page for both new and existing users to the anime.

c. How easy it is to implement and maintain. *Now I just want to say this, I am not a coder. Any thing I say about how easy or hard it would be to implement and maintain is just me using my common sense, of course it could be completely wrong. If anything is wrong, then feel free to tell me. If you can code or whatever and think you know of a way to implement one of my ideas or a better way to do it, then tell me and I'll put it up here.*

Here are three solutions that I have thought of so far that would solve the watch one episode problem, I added onto it to make them not just solve that problem but to do more for the user and for the accuracy of the overall rating. The third is the best but needs a lot of maintenance, I believe the second has the best chance of being implemented because it's the medium selection, and the first one is the easiest to implement but not that accurate.

1. Have a number be a cutoff for the amount of episodes someone has to watch for their score to count for an anime over 100 episodes long. This would give a more accurate rating than no limit, but it's significantly less accurate than options 2 or 3. Since the cutoff number is static, the most accurate way or ideal way(1/5 cut off of the exact current episode) will drift further away as the anime gets longer, 20 episodes per 100 episodes aired. This won't give any info to new or existing users on the info panel. But this would take care of the watch one episode and rate problem. And would only need to be implemented once. The number I don't have down yet, 25 episodes seems like a fair number for any anime over 100 episodes.

- Least accurate of the three
- Will not give the users any info on the amount of airing episodes
- Will take care of the one episode problem
- The least amount of work out of the three(it would possibly only need to be implemented once)

2. Keep track of long running anime's current episodes rounded down to the nearest 100. This will allow the 1/5 rule to apply for airing anime, this would only be done for anime over 100 episodes long. And will give a less accurate rating than the 3rd option but could be significantly more than the 1st option since this number is not static. It would take care of the watch one episode and rate problem and will never be more than 20 cut off episodes behind #3(which is the most accurate). This would mean Toriko which recently passed 100 episodes would be seen as 100+ on the information panel, Naruto Shippuden 300+, One Piece 600+, Detective Conan 700+, etc. It being shown as 100+ or 200+ etc would show new users within 100 episodes of the anime's current progress, enough to know whether you would be interested, but would not really help an existing user wanting to keep tabs on an anime. Being only updated once every 100 episodes means it doesn't take much work to keep it updated, only around once every 2 years would the number need to be changed per anime.(exception being Sazae-san which airs multiple times a week IIRC)

- Will give the second most accurate rating of the three
- Will give users the second most amount of info on the amount of airing episodes(within 100 episodes max), it would help new users not existing ones
- Will take care of the one episode problem
- Second least amount work out of the three.(only would need to be updated for each anime about once every two years)

3. Keep track of all airing anime's current episodes, or at least long running anime over 100 episodes. This will allow the 1/5 rule to apply for airing anime, possibly only for 100+ episode anime(depending on the reason of why the site doesn't keep track of airing episodes) which would give the most accurate rating and will fix the watch one episode and rate problem that I mentioned. It will also give new users to the site or to an anime, the ability to see how many episodes have currently aired on the anime's main page(near the other info they usually look at when first checking out an anime) quite easily to see if they might want to watch it. It will also be useful for existing users to check out the progress of an airing anime without having to go to the forum, which isn't always easy like I explained.
  • Could be done with the help of users. There are probably tons of users willing to update the episode count of currently airing anime(even more for the long running anime since they usually have an already dedicated fanbase).

  • It could run on some sort of a system where it updates it once a week. When there's a break because of sports, natural disaster, holiday, etc then a mod can just tick it back an episode or episodes or just disable it for a week.

  • It can use the episode discussion threads since this site already keeps track of them(seen as how if you update your episode count it can bring you to the thread). The only problem with this would be mistake or on purpose someone could make a episode discussion thread for a long off episode or just be off an episode or two. This is the least likely way.

  • It can use the user's episode counts, if most of the users have it set to a certain episode then that's what episode it's probably on. Since it's using the whole userbase, it's not as easy to screw up as it is for using the episode discussion threads.
- Would give the most accurate rating of the three, the same as the ideal rating as it will always be up to date.
- Will give both new and existing users the info they want.
- Will take care of the one episode problem
- Most work out of the three
