Interest Stacks

Animeby Zacko

This stack contains non-isekai fantasy anime that you could easily mistake for being an isekai.

Isekai means "different world" and is a Japanese genre of portal fantasy and science fiction. It is a bit hard to define, but generally revolves around a person (or multiple people) who are transported or reincarnated into another world.
Since this definition is fairly broad, you'll find some shows like "Sonny Boy" or "Bakemono no Ko" that are technically isekai, but may not seem like it, as they do not share the most common tropes that you'll see in other isekai anime like “Death March”, “Kenja no Mago”, “Isekai smartphone” or “Mushoku Tensei”. While these shows are not completely identical, they do share a number of tropes, like having a male protagonist enter a medieval fantasy world filled with monsters and magic where they either start with powerful abilities or slowly gain them, similarly to progressing in a fantasy RPG. It is also common for similar isekai shows to include game mechanics like ability stats, skill names, UI screens or even an infinite inventory. Another common trope is for the protagonist to be a chosen or summoned hero who goes on a quest to save the world, ending up with great powers, great riches and a harem of love interests.

This is a list of shows that could be mistaken as isekai since they share a lot of the most common tropes, but missing the element of being transported to another world.

A great example is “Danmachi” where the protagonist already exists in a fantasy world, has a unique and powerful ability and explores a dungeon full of monsters, gaining new stats and skills as though he was the protagonist of a fantasy RPG. Other examples include powerful protagonists being reborn within the same world or shows mostly taking place within a VRMMO.

Feel free to send me a message if I’ve included an actual isekai by mistake, or if you have any suggestions!

To
fellow Time Travellers friends,

This list focuses mainly on anime that has a time travel element to it... where the protagonist will go back in time to fix a problem by using some superpower or another means...

*** some rant ***
I just finished watching "Island" not to spoil that anime... there's some underserved review about it that says to be controversial and ecchi but in reality, the series was made on purpose to be confusing and misleading for people to get some deceptive ideas, some of the series on the list has the same features... I mean its needs to be seen until finished to clear the water...there's no way around it... unless the anime was really bad you cant even finish it...is a give or take... you either risk disappointment or missing it out...

if you are too young then maybe avoid it for the ecchi start but I think is an interesting watch... is like the best thing since discovering warm water, at the end in this genre generally...so don't expect the end to be deeply profound and life-changing...

the only anime to avoid if you are too young is Redo of Healer is very explicit in adult content...

this type of anime on the list is meant to be confusing and misleading to create that mysteriousness... you might have some guessing figuring out. because of contradictions, it gets suspicious then you discover if your suspicion was right or was way off, that's the fun I guess...

usually, it gets interesting when starts to unfold like origami... you see the outside then it will unfold until is the paper with the marks, the origin of it...

feel free to share with me your experience on other interesting anime that caught your attention, preferably that with deep meaning and life-changing, if possible...

the end,

2027

Winter 2024 Update:
- added Cid, Neema, Yumiella, Elise, Desir, Mia, Kaoru
- stacked newest to oldest
- more from FtT: https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=902503

=-=

There are a lot of interest stacks related to isekai. This is yet another one with a hopefully worthwhile twist.

It all started with an amusing comment I saw on Crunchyroll, Sweet Reincarnation, episode 1, by user "FranktheTriviaman".

=-=

“Wow, killed by a falling candy sculpture; that’s new. Usually they get killed by a truck”
. Ryoma- “not me; I sneezed in bed and apparently my head hit the floor too hard so I died of a hemorrhage”
. Naofumi- “same; I opened a book in a library that started glowing and next thing I knew I was in another world”
. Myne- “I was crushed by a huge pile of books during an earthquake”
. Ainz- “All I know is one second the game I was playing shut down and the next I was stuck in the body of my character”
. Touya- “apparently God was throwing lightning bolts and one hit me by mistake”
. Rimiru- “I was walking down the street minding my own business and next thing I knew someone ran up and stabbed me”
. Tanya- “I was pushed in front of a train”
. Azusa- “I worked myself to death”
. Haruto- “I was on a bus that was hit by a train
. Spider- “I think I was in a classroom that exploded”
. Hiraku- I died in a hospital bed
. Kazuma- “And I died of shock when I thought a slow moving tractor was a truck that was about to hit me”
“Wait; so has ANYONE actually been hit by truck and Isekai’d?”
*Adele, Rudeus and Shin raise their hands*
“That’s… fewer than I expected”

=-=

Made me wonder just where the notion of truck-kun came from. As an isekai fan myself, I started trying to track down as many (how did I get here?)-kun as I could. This stack is the result. Apologies to FranktheTriviaman: I know I'm ruining the preceding joke, but I just can't seem to stop myself.

In general, truck-kun's job is not easy. According to an article at Collider, there are two subgenres of isekai:

* isekai tenni - transported to another world; includes summoning and traveling through gateways
* isekai tensei - reincarnated in another world; requires dying in the original world

When summoned or traveling to another world, the MC usually retains his or her body, memories, and name.

When reincarnated, there are several possibilities:

* The MC can be newborn while retaining memories of the original world.
* The MC can be newborn without memories, and recover or wake up to memories of the original world at some point.
* The MC can reincarnate into the body of an existing person in the other world. This raises some thorny ethical questions.
* The MC can reincarnate into the body of a terminally ill or recently deceased person in the other world.
* The MC can simply appear as a version of theirself in the other world.

So for starters, truck-kun is not the instigator in any isekai tenni story since there's no dying involved.

Normally, the original world is "our" reality - the real world. The other world is most often a fantasy world with culture and economy roughly equivalent to Medieval or early Renaissance Europe. The other world almost always has magic and monsters.

One twist on the normal pattern is the reverse isekai, in which the MC originates in the fantasy world and travels to or reincarnates in "our" world. If the original world is a fantasy world, there probably aren't any truck-kun so the poor MC has to make other arrangements.

Another variation involves an original world and other world that are separated by time, not space. Our MC can start in our current world and travel to or reincarnate into our world in the distant future. Similarly, the MC can start in a fantasy world then travel or reincarnate into that same world in that world's future. If the original world is our present world, truck-kun has a chance. If not, the same issue arises: it's sad for truck-kun but they probably don't exist in any fantasy worlds no matter what the time frame.

In addition to the other world differing in space or time, it can also be a world from a fictional setting: a book or a game. Game worlds are often Dungeons and Dragons-style role playing fantasy worlds. Otome game worlds are also possible and are also usually fantasy worlds.

In summary: isekai tenni -> no truck-kun; reverse isekai -> (most likely) no truck-kun; isekai tensei -> truck-kun has a shot.

=-=

For each show in this stack, I tried to capture the MCs original and other world name (sometimes, the MC retains their original world name). I also tried to capture the means by which he or she got from their original world to the other world. In some cases, this information is never spelled out, at least as far as I could discover. For shows with multiple seasons or MAL entries, I've only included the first season. There are mild spoilers since the reincarnation mechanism is revealed.

So far, the tally is:

6 Unknown-kun xxxx xx

1 Book-kun x
1 Confection-kun x
1 Dragon-kun x
1 Embarassment-kun x
1 Fire-kun x
1 Guillotine-kun x
1 Gun-kun x
1 Old-age-kun x
1 Power-failure-kun x
1 Ritual-kun x
1 Stairs-kun x
1 Wall-kun x

2 Illness-kun xx
2 Knife-kun xx
2 Negligent-god-kun xx
2 Plane-kun xx
2 Train-kun xx

3 Spell-kun xxx

4 Car-kun xxxx

6 Karoshi-kun xxxx xx (overwork-related death)
6 Truck-kun xxxx xx

I always welcome feedback, but specifically in this case, corrections and additions.

This is a compilation of the hottest trash anime of Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall 2023, as proclaimed by the Mother's Basement YouTube channel. This is "gaaarbaage" served fresh by "shaaay gaaarbaaage". You'll get the idea if you watch the videos or maybe you can figure it out from the shows stacked here.

"You guys need to understand, trash isn't always a bad thing. I adore trash. The whole reason I do this in the first place is so I can get paid roll around in the stuff." -- Geoff Thew

"When I call an anime trash, I'm not saying it's of inherently poor quality. That would be garbage. Trashiness isn't about quality at all. It's about taste. Or rather the deliberate and often delightful lack thereof. Trash is gaudy. Casually offensive. Nakedly self-indulgent, pun full-frontally intended... But some trash uses its unparalleled creative freedom to break truly new narrative ground." -- Geoff Thew

I try to pull a few amusing or informative quotes and include the trash rating. The rating system is based on trash receptacles and fire. A dumpster fire is probably considered a five or six on a scale of one to ten, but the system is definitely not rigorous or linear.

There isn't a particular order or implied rank in the presentation but I'll try to keep them listed here in the order they appear.

You can find the YouTube videos in this blog post: https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=900440. There are chapter markers to help you get to specific portions of the video, though sometimes the titles are a bit cryptic. You can also follow these links:

Update:

Update:
-- added Mother's Basement Hottest Trash

This stack exceeded the 50 item limit so I split it in two. See the stack: "2023 Fall YouTube Critics Recommendations - Returning & Continuing Shows" for the rest. Sorry for the inconvenience.

This stack consolidates watch recommendations for Fall 2023 from several YouTube critics/commentators. Stacked in alpha order.

------------------------------< Pre-season >------------------------------

These are recommendations based on hype, buzz, trailers, and sometimes the reputation of the creative team.

414Anime 152K subs: "The Fall 2023 Anime NOT TO MISS!". Highlighting new anime. Not ranked or ordered so I'll just note it one each show mentioned.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7v3zaojfcY

AH Brandon Reviews 60.2K subs: "What Will Brandon Watch Fall of Anime 2023". "I won't be going over everything, just some of the things that catch my eye." His channel content is driven largely by audience interest so this isn't a "what to watch" recommendation. More like someone taking the pulse of his community.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfXBbRNvltg

DomoSenpai 4.25K subs: "Ranking EVERY Anime for the Fall 2023 Season". Tier list. Tiers from highest to lowest: Most Anticipated > Intrigued > Might Check Out > Meh > Dog Shtt > Not Interested.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZx9hWL0G80

EliteAlice 821 subs: "10 NEW Anime to Watch Fall 2023". "This is what I'm liking the best right now." I'll add chapter markers to each entry he mentions so you can watch specific segments.

Garnt 498K subs: "I Watched EVERY Anime in Fall 2023". This is an edited version of a nearly 5 hour stream covering every anime in the Fall 2023 season. Ranking: Must Watch; Three episodes (potential); One episode (give it a chance); Skip. Based on each anime description and trailers. Presumably, shows that were edited out were ranked Skip without much fanfare.
"Anime doesn't make sense anymore!"
Edited: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjOoHnLnFT4
Full stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB0LL2nHK-A (include chapter markers)

Nems Reviews 89 subs: "Anime Worth Watching in Fall 2023". Not ranked so I'll just add the channel to each entry he mentions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IyHNgtjO7Q

Otaku Spirit 15.7K subs: "Top 10 Exciting Fall 2023 Anime!". His top 10 new anime for Fall. Based largely on the strength of the PV but sometimes fueled by the past performance of the creative team. I added the countdown from 10 to 1 (most exciting).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SIsXMfTFrs

Razovy Revived 26.8K subs: "Watch These Anime Fall 2023 | Razovy Revived". Not ranked or ordered.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIVhsNSsC-M

Shotoro 26.1K subs: "Top 10 Anime Series Of Fall 2023". Ranked from 10 > 1 (top).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHEFMUFHJpw

ViniiTube 1.06M subs: "Top 10 Most Anticipated Fall 2023 Anime". Ranked from 10 to 1 (most anticipated). Just over half way through the Summer season, and ViniiTube is first out of the gate with Fall recommendations. Includes new and returning shows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O88vghl4pnI

ViniiTube 1.06M subs: "Top 10 Most Anticipated New Anime of Fall 2023". Ranked from 10 to 1 (most anticipated). In contrast to the preceding entry, this is for new shows only. Identified by ViniiTube (new) in the entries below.

Yozakura Sensei 3.87K subs: "The Fall 2023 Anime You Should Be Watching". Ordered list from #1 down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5WEpvfctIw

I expect a number of Top 10... channels will put out Top 10 lists for Fall 2023. I'm going to collect their votes for each show without further commentary from me.
-- Anime Town Top 7 // https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGc2hhO59fU

-----<

It's pretty clear "Sousou no Frieren" (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) is the locomotive pulling the hype-train this Fall. "Undead Unluck" has the next most interest, followed by, surprisingly, "Kusuriya no Hitorigoto" (The Apothecary Diaries).

-----<

Otaku Spirit 14.8K subs: "Same Mistake Again! Fall 2023 Is Too Much?". As of early Sep 2023, MAL lists 62 new TV anime, 8 ONA, and 13 Movies for Fall 2023. If you are annoyed by release delays and schedule issues, this video will shed some light. You'll also get a peek behind-the-scenes of the anime industry.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGIbg2vN_BI&t=633s

------------------------------< First Impressions >------------------------------

Gigguk 3.54M subs: "Fall Anime 2023 in a Nutshell". "What am I doing with my life?" G runs through 24 new and returning shows this season with his usual sarcastic commentary, singling out a few for praise. He didn't have much to say about any other shows. I try to capture the tone of his comments and include chapter markers so you can watch for yourself.

Glass Reflection 583K subs: "I Watched EVERY SINGLE NEW ANIME of the Fall 2023 Season...". To be clear, does not include sequels, new seasons, or returning shows. Based on the first episode or three, the rating system describes whether a show will remain on his watch list, or not. GR will "Keep" shows he will continue watching; "Toss" shows he won't be continuing; and "Hold" for those shows that need a few more episodes before deciding. Chapter markers included for your viewing convenience.

Mother's Basement 1.33M subs: "The BEST Anime of Fall 2023 - Ones to Watch". Unranked Top 10 with 15 honorable mentions, aka, the bargain bin. Covering new shows only. Plus some mentions for upcoming shows on Netflix: "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off", "Onimusha", and "Good Night World"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9XWqjP8tGo

Plus individual videos noted for the appropriate show.

------------------------------< Mid- and Post-season Reviews >------------------------------

Garnt 529K subs: "Ranking Fall 2023 Anime". Some favorites and some least-favorites on a tier list (D < C < B < A < S + Didn't Watch; B is the middle tier.). He doesn't cover every Fall 2023 show - probably because he didn't watch them all (so what is the Didn't Watch tier?) This is an edited version of a 2 hr 37 min stream on the GiggukVOD channel. The VOD version has chapter markers so you can watch your favorite segment in full. There are no chapter markers for the edited version so I estimated time hacks from the transcript.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tceiuy13kSE

Mother's Basement 1.34M subs: "HOTTEST TRASH Anime of Fall 2023". Unranked but flaming-trash-receptacle-rated.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrW3DnC0i1g

I will update this stack as more anime YouTubers release Fall 2023 videos.
